3 Music Is... Thank you for your interest in the Katy ISD JH Band Camp! We are very excited about your participation in our camp and we know that you will benefit musically, educationally and socially. We are offering this camp to provide an economical and convenient alternative to those who may not have an opportunity to attend another summer band camp due to scheduling or costs. As a participant in this camp, you will learn from some of the best teachers in Katy and the greater Houston area. Students individually will develop responsibility, discipline, coordination, dexterity, self-expression, a greater self-confidence and many other valuable skills that will help throughout life. As a group, band students will develop cooperation, unity and teamwork. No other activity offers you, the student, so many opportunities to become a leader, team player, model citizen, and musician while gaining a better understanding and appreciation of one of humankind s greatest gifts - MUSIC!!! About The Camp Requirements The Katy ISD JH Band Camp is open to all Katy ISD students entering grades 7, 8 and 9 for the school year OR have one full year of applied instrumental instruction. Organization Bands will be grouped by ability, through auditions, with the number of bands determined by enrollment. Splashtown Auditions Time and Location Auditions will be held at Tompkins HS on the Monday of the camp beginning promptly at 8:00 A.M. Material Students will be asked to perform the following to help us determine your band placement: major scales, chromatic scale and audition etude. Download band camp audition material from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage: Registration Forms Complete and return: The attached Registration Form with payment The Consent To Treat Form The Permission To Travel Form (if attending Splashtown trip) Forms can be downloaded at To celebrate the end of a great camp, campers will attend Splashtown Water Park (I-45 North in Spring, TX). Included is a sand volleyball court, basketball, horseshoes, all-you-can-eat hamburger and hotdog cookout (12:30pm - 1:30pm), unlimited drinks (12:00pm - 2:00pm), and a full day of splashing fun. All campers attending Splashtown Water Park should include an additional $35 (this fee covers park admission, lunch, and transportation). A Science It is exact, specific, and it demands exact acoustics. Mathematical It is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper. A Foreign Language Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French. The notation is certainly not English, but a highly developed kind of short hand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language. History Music generally reflects the environment and time period of its origin, often expressing elements of a specific country or culture. Physical Education It requires fantastic coordination and control of muscles which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets. Music is Art! It allows a human being to take dry, lifeless marks on a page and transform them into different ideas and emotions. While Education and Technology may be the building materials of a prosperous society, the Arts and Humanities are the building materials of Civilizations!
