1 Teachers Notes For Let The Music Move You Some points to discuss prior to the performance. What are some of the different types of music that you might hear? Punk rock, Reggae, Rock, Opera, Classical, Children s. What types of instruments are used in these types of music? Guitars, drums, piano, didgeridoo, an orchestra (many instruments). Other Cultures. There are several other cultures discussed in the performance. In particular, Indigenous Australians, American Indians, Maoris, African. Which other cultures and nationalities are represented in your school? The role of music in our daily lives. To entertain. Its use in advertising Dancing. In teaching. Various types of music. Rock, reggae, opera, classical, punk. Vocabulary used in the performance. Corroboree, Protest, Ukulele, Harmony, Bagpipes, Discord, Didgeridoo, Ceremony. 2 Teachers notes for use with the class after the performance. Other Cultures. There are several other cultures and groups mentioned in the performance. What are some of these? Indigenous Australians, American Indians, Maori, African. Discuss which people in the class were born in another country and come from a different culture. Where? Which culture? What are special dances called in some other cultures? What are some of these dances called in other cultures? Haka, Corroboree, Powwow. Which culture has a corroboree? a powwow? a Haka? History. What song is about English convicts? Bound for Botany Bay. Where were the convicts sent to? And why? This song has a purpose. What idea does this teach? Not to steal. What roles does music play in our lives? To teach (for example ABC ). Advertising jingles. -What advertisements were used? O Brien Glass, Toyota, Cadburys. -What is the purpose of these jingles? Remind you of the product or encourage sales. Protest chants. What are some of the chants used in the production? -What do we want? More pocket money! -What do we want? Less homework! To entertain. Dance (movement to music). What are some of the singing and music styles in the performance? Punk rock. Reggae. Rock. Opera. Classical. Childrens. Baby s lullaby. Page 2 of 8
3 Vocabulary used in the performance. Corroboree, Protest, Ukulele, Harmony, Bagpipes, Discord, Didgeridoo, Ceremony. Ask the class to suggest special times or occasions that music relates to? Easter. Christmas. Birthdays. Religious occasions. Solemn events. Page 3 of 8
4 Activity Sheet Years K to 6 Let The Music Move You Name that dance. Make a list of all the dances that students know. (Waltz, Disco, Barn Dance, Line Dancing, Ballet, Ballroom Dancing, Rap Dancing, Cancan, etc). Use musical instruments (such as a drum) to make up a new language. For Example:- One hit for - Yes. Two Hits for:- No. Three hits for:- Maybe. Four Hits for :- I don't know. A long drum roll tapping with your fingers could mean:- Big, Many, Happy and Excited. A short finger tapping drum roll (like once through your fingers) means:- Small, Few, Sad and Not Interested. Now ask simple questions that can be answered by the sounds. Remember that you can combine two. A question like: Are you looking forward to the sports carnival? If answered by one hit and then a long finger tapping, could be translated as "Yes, I'm looking forward to it". Page 4 of 8
