I have found myself in tears on several occasions, and frankly, again, right no. tehen and I met in 2007, hen e both had music layed on the same rogram. - I say e met... but, the truth is, he as the one ho initiated the contact. I kne of him and his music, of course, and as retty much a deer in headlights hen near him that day. Well - true to tehen's form (as I ould subsequently come to discover) - he found me, as extremely nice and comlimentary, and e had a long conversation. Every time I sa him thereafter, it as like seeing an old friend - he as funny, curious about hat as going ith me and my career, and also offering advice, hich I still follo to this day. In many ays, I relate to him very much. (and this as confirmed listening to the radio broadcasts and archived intervies ith him over the ast coule of days). ctually, it's almost scary - and lease mind I'm making artistic comarisons as if I'm his equal - but he ould call his music neo-romantic, but quickly diffuse the negative conation that exists currently; he ould describe his music as both rhythmic and lyrical. He liked joking around. He loved text. He's self-ublished (one of the first success stories in that regard that I can think of). ll of these s I ould use to describe a lot of my characteristics, both ersonally and musically. (lus e're both thin ith bron hair - but he had more hair) In the days since his assing, I have read many tributes, here eole have soken ith such eloquence. I have never been blessed ith the ability to seak as such, and so I have found myself these ast fe days really struggling ith ho to exress my sadness. he only ay I kno ho to exress my thoughts is through music. nd so - last night - I rote a little choral score in tehen's honor, and in his memory. he ords come from some I read that tehen's collaborator, Michael Dennis rone, shared, as he thought of tehen's assing: by Edna t incent Millay about the death of a oet: that ever / t the / as others I oe teve so much, and this is the only ay I could think to try to reay some of hat he gave to me. I kne I could count on seeing him every December at the Midest Clinic here in my hometon of Chicago, and I ill be so sad hen I'm there this year, to only be reminded again that he is gone. In the sring of 2014, his music as remiered/erformed at four consecutive CDN and regional conferences. In 2014/15, his ne bassoon concerto - Dialogue of elf and oul - ill have been erformed at the niversity of Minnesota, niversity of Michigan (including a CD recording), Eastern Michigan niversity, niversity of Wisconsin/Madison, Merit chool of Music, niversity of exas, and Ohio tate niversity. tehenson's immediately successful olr's ale sequel - he Devil's ale - has garnered multile erformances since its 2013 remiere, in addition to a forthcoming CD release ith Western Illinois niversity. His landmark educational ork, Comose Yourself, has no been erformed over 250 times since its creation in 2002, and ill see erformances by many more orchestras in the near future as ell.
