2 rogram notes gnace Jan aderewski ( ) is recognized as a gited musician and one o oland s most revered atriots ollowing a childhood illed with severe challenges and tragedies aderewski trained intensively as a ianist and comoser and develoed a wildly successul concertizing career His brilliant and emotional erormances arguably made him the most celebrated ianist ater ranz Liszt A assionate nationalist he served as olish rime Minister rom and again rom (the second time in exile) During both World Wars aderewski tirelessly raised relie unds or oland and donated almost all o his own ortune to beneit his native land musicians in need and Jewish reugees aderewski died suddenly in 1941 while erorming a beneit concert tour in the nited States He was given a hero s burial in Arlington National Cemetery n 1992 ater the all o communism his body was returned to rest in the ancient St John s Cathedral in Warsaw aderewski s Minuet in G (originally or solo iano) was his most amous and beloved comosition oten requested in erormance and requently drawing sighs o contentment and recognition rom audiences He also wrote orchestral music an oera a cantata a violin sonata and many iano ieces and songs notes to the conductor The music o aderewski is wellknown among ianists and the theme to this minuet is arguably his most amiliar melody The iece is a minuet and the oening should be erormed lightly in the style o the classical eriod Yet the comoser s late romantic inluences are very resent (ie the chromatics in mm 8 9 ritard in mm 7 8 accelerando beginning in m 20) and so these musical moments can be erormed with more energy and reedom Thus the erormance will be enhanced i this tension between the old and the new is emhasized The structure o the iece is simle beginning with the irst violins redominating (mm 1 18) then the violas and celli coming to the ore with a contrasting melody (mm 19 26) a return to the oening theme layed by the seconds violas and celli (mm 27 34) and the irst violins closing the iece as they recall the second hrase o the oening melody (mm 35 44) arts should be balanced so the rimary melodic line is always heard easily The conductor is encouraged to add moments o aroriate rubato throughout review Only Legal se Requires urchase
