Behind him the shrubs clap together, The grass stands up again, The wasteland engulfs him. Ah, who heals the pains of him, Johannes Brahms For whom balsam became poison? Who drank hatred of man Out of the fullness of love? First despised, now a despiser, He furtively consumes his own merit In unsatisfying egotism. The choir is under the direction of LaDene Edwards, music instructor at Lena Whitmore Elementary School and accompanied by Gretchen Wissner, who is also at Lena. Children audition for the member choir in September and January. They meet twice a week throughout the school year to receive quality vocal training. At the end of the semester, they tour the elementary schools, perform at a local retirement center, the mall and community events such as the Farmers Market. They participate in the University of Idaho s Holiday Concert, which is coordinated by the Lionel Hampton School of Music. 5 16 5 technology has created fewer opportunities for faceto-face human connection, musical performances that As emphasize community create a sense of togetherness and sharing that is one of the most important aspects of the human condition. This evening s presentation is truly a community concert because the performers include the Idaho-Washington Concert Chorale (IWCC), a community chorus whose members hail from all over the Palouse; guest conductor Paul Brueggemeier from Spokane; the Moscow Arts Commission (MAC) Youth Choir; Washington State University (WSU) senior mezzo-soprano Dawn Bernhardt from Woodinville, WA; and a chamber orchestra comprising members of the Washington Idaho Symphony, the Spokane Symphony, and students and faculty from the WSU and University of Idaho Music Departments. To further exemplify the idea of community, IWCC and the MAC Youth Choir will combine their voices for Around the Corner; then the Chorale, children, and audience members will join together for the final selection, O Music. John Weiss Program Notes Almighty and Everlasting God & Hosanna to the Son of David Orlando Gibbons began his musical career at the age of thirteen as a singer at King s College, Cambridge, where his brother Edward was choirmaster. He received the B.Mus. degree at Cambridge in 1606, and the D.Mus. at Oxford in He was senior organist at the Chapel Royal at the time of his death, as well as organist at Westminster Abbey. Although by profession he was a keyboard player, his outstanding achievement as a composer is in vocal music, especially music for Anglican services. The Anglican liturgy of Orlando Gibbons time permitted the singing of an anthem towards the end of Matins and Evensong. Many of Gibbons anthems are settings of biblical texts. Although Hosanna to the Son of David seems to go back to the Geneva Bible (1560), Gibbons usually turned to the Bishop s Bible, first published in 1568, or to one of the editions of the Book of Common Prayer, which included the psalms. Gibbons wrote full anthems that were sung by the whole choir, and verse anthems that contained passages with verses for a soloist or a small group of singers. Both Almighty and Everlasting God and Hosanna to the Son of David are full anthems. Perhaps Gibbons least ostentatious anthem, Almighty and Everlasting God is a setting of the Collect for the third Sunday after Epiphany. In a manuscript that may have been copied by John Stephens (who in 1625 was the Chapel Royal s Recorder of Songes and in 1626/7 was elected Clerk of the Cheque) it is described as the Anthem to Mr. Gibbons Short Servis. Almighty and Everlasting God is written in an uncomplicated counterpoint appropriate to the predominantly homophonic style of the Short Service. The initial entries on A flat and D flat cadence strongly on the dominant, E flat; but a tendency toward the subdominant is stressed by the flatting of the seventh degree (D flat) on either side of the cadence, and also by the final plagal cadence. In contrast to Almighty and Everlasting God, Hosanna to the Son of David provides a demonstration of Gibbons abilities that might have been demanded by a special occasion. Its six voice parts are almost entirely contrapuntal, and it includes a variety of technical devices: imitation, inversion, retrogression, and the combination of different motives that are well integrated. The first section contains a single phrase that ascends an octave and subsequently expands to a ninth. Then, before the text is repeated in a modified form, there is a more tonally adventurous middle section. John Harley Requiem From the age of nine, Gabriel Fauré studied music at the École Niedermeyer, the École de musique religieuse et classique, where Saint-Saëns was a member of the staff. Saint-Saëns was regarded as a progressive teacher, introducing his pupils not only to the music of Bach and Mozart but also to controversial composers such as Wagner and Liszt. Unlike most major French composers, Fauré did not attend the Paris Conservatoire but continued his studies with Saint-Saëns, who greatly encouraged him by helping him to get his music published. The two became lifelong friends and Fauré later said that he owed everything to Saint-Saëns. Fauré was a fine organist and in 1896 was appointed to the prestigious Madeleine church in Paris. He was also an excellent teacher, and perhaps because of his renowned expertise as organist and teacher only slowly gained recognition as a composer. He eventually became professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and its Director from 1905 to Although he wrote several works involving a full orchestra, his particular talent lay within the more intimate musical forms songs, piano music and chamber music. His somewhat austere style and highly individual, impressionistic harmonic language contrasts markedly with the music of the Austro-German tradition, which dominated European music from the time of Beethoven until well into the twentieth century. The subtlety of Fauré s music, and his concentration on the smallscale, led many to criticize him for lacking depth, a judgment based on the mistaken premise that the bigger and bolder a composer s music the more worthwhile it must be. Fauré deliberately avoided the grander kind of orchestral music that could easily have brought him fame and fortune. He preferred instead to embrace an elegant and subtle musical language that has won him increasing numbers of admirers, particularly as a composer of songs, a genre in which he is now recognized as a master. Beethoven once said, A Requiem ought to be quiet music - it needs no trump of doom; memories of the dead require no hubbub. Apparently Fauré agreed, for he said of his Requiem, Altogether it is as gentle as I am myself. My Requiem... has been said to express no fear of death; it has been called a lullaby of death. But that is how I feel about death; a happy deliverance, a reaching for a happy deliverance, rather than a mournful passing... Perhaps I have sought to depart from what is conventional because for so long I was organist at services of interment. I m fed up with that. I wanted to do something different. The Requiem was composed in 1888, when Fauré was in his forties, quite probably in response to the recent death of his

6 6 15 Program Notes father. Shortly after its first performance, Fauré s mother also died, giving the work an added poignancy. In its sequence of movements, the Requiem departs significantly from the standard liturgical text. Fauré included two new sections, the lyrical Pie Jesu and the transcendent In Paradisum, with its soaring vocal line and murmuring harp accompaniment. He also omitted the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum - for most composers an opportunity to exploit to the full the dramatic possibilities of all the available choral and orchestral forces. Consequently the prevailing mood is one of peacefulness and serenity, and the work has often been described, quite justly, as a Requiem without the Last Judgment. Fauré originally designed his Requiem to be functional for church services with appropriately conservative accompaniment: the organ supplemented by harp, horns and strings, generally omitting violins except in the Sanctus. The technique of backing off the violins for a more somber effect may have been an idea borrowed from Brahms. In 1900, under some pressure from his publishers, he reluctantly agreed to the release of a revised version containing additional instrumental parts designed to broaden the work s appeal. This later version became such a favorite that it is surprising to learn it did not gain widespread popularity until the nineteen-fifties. In 1984, composer John Rutter produced an edition of the Requiem that probably holds true to Fauré s original conception, and that is the version presented this evening. In comparison with the large-scale masterpieces of Verdi, Brahms and Berlioz, Fauré s Requiem seems gentle and unassuming, yet it is this very quality of understatement which contributes so eloquently to the work s universal appeal. Whether the Requiem is performed with one of its grander orchestrations or in its original version, it is impossible not to be moved by the ethereal beauty of this humble masterpiece. John Bawden, Music Dire or, Fareham Philharmonic Choir, Fareham, England Alto Rhapsody Johannes Brahms composed his Rhapsody, Op. 53, in the autumn of 1869, drawing upon a difficult poem of Goethe s, Harzreise im Winter ( Winter Journey Through the Harz Mountains ). Of the poem s eighty-eight lines, Brahms chose to set only the central part, one quarter of the whole. Goethe s poem was written after a 1777 visit to the Harz Mountains, where he met a correspondent of his, a misanthropic young fellow named Friedrich Viktor Leberecht Plessing, who had withdrawn from the world into the solitude of nature. Goethe s poem describes one who goes off apart, praying that the Father of Love may have on his Psalter a single tone perceptible to his ear, which might revive his heart. It seems odd that Brahms should choose such a darkly personal text to set to music as a wedding gift for Julie Schumann, the daughter of his dear friend Clara, but there can be little doubt that Goethe s poem spoke to him, in his own solitary life, with unusual directness, and he responded to it with personal music. The lengthy introduction shivers in its chilly C-minor depiction of the winter scene, interrupted by the alto soloist entering suddenly as if overheard in the middle of a thought who notices the solitary wanderer. A central section, actually an aria, describes the one who, having been scorned, now scorns all in return. The harmonic and rhythmic agitation of this section yields magically at the entrance of the men s voices to a consoling C major and a warmly ardent melody praying for the reconciliation of the wanderer. Donald Te ers, Music Dire or, The Boston C ilia, Boston, M. Around the Corner The poem, Around the Corner, by New York columnist Charles Hanson Towne, first appeared in the February 10, 1917 edition of The Saturday Evening Post. The composer was introduced to it as a child when he saw a framed copy of it hanging in his grandparents home. He must have shown a strong interest in it because when his grandparents died many years later, he inherited their copy. He and his wife have since displayed the poem wherever they ve lived. Children sing the opening melody, which suggests the innocence of youth. The sudden entrance of adult voices, along with the abrupt modulation and tempo change compromise this feeling of innocence. The poem s final line is made more poignant by the return of the children s voices. John Weiss O Music Lowell Mason was born into a very prominent and musical family in Medfield, Massachusetts where he attended singing school and became proficient on several instruments. In 1812, Mason moved to Savannah, Georgia where he became a partner in a dry goods firm and began offering singing schools for church choir members. When Mason returned to the north, he was elected president of Boston s Handel and Haydn Musical Society and served as director of two church choirs. Under his leadership, both choirs acquired national reputations for excellence in church music performance. Mason s musical life was not devoted entirely to church music, however. Children s music became a priority to him, and he relinquished the presidency of the musical society in 1832 to begin a vocal class for children at Bowdoin Street Church and to teach music in several of the city s private schools. The same year, Mason, with his colleague George James Web and other local musicians, established the Boston Academy of Music, dedicated to improving quality of church music and promoting general music education. Boston Academy, the country s leading independent music education institution, offered instruction for adults and children, but its leaders were strongly in favor of music in common school. Academy associates and other prominent citizens submitted two proposals to the Massachusetts School Board urging that vocal music instruction be made part of the primary school curriculum. Following the second proposal (1837), the board agreed to an experimental inclusion of vocal music at Hawes Primary School; Mason volunteered his services as instructor. In 1838, the board voted to include music in puyblic elementary schools, marking the first time in American history that music was officially given a place in the school curriculum. Joseph A.
