1 LAST REVISED APRIL Western University, Faculty of Music VIOLIN JURY & RECITAL REQUIREMENTS General Information: Please read carefully: - For each jury all categories must be covered and are to be performed as listed. - All prepared materials must amount to a total playing time of no less than the length of the jury. The jury panel will have the right to ask for just excerpts of the proposed requirements. - Each element/category of the jury will be graded with equal weight, calculated to a final grade - Please have one binder for your jurors prepared that includes all repertoire required for your jury (including orchestra excerpts) CATEGORY 1 - Repertoire a) Pieces refers to movements from concertos or sonatas, show pieces or works for violin solo. You can choose either: Two movements from same work (fast/slow) OR one slow and one fast movement from different works OR works of same period of styles OR two movements from different pieces and different stylistic periods b) Grade levels refer to the representative levels of repertoire suggested in the current Royal Conservatory Syllabus or in the current Contemporary Showcase Syllabus. c) Performance majors, or anyone planning to audition for the performance degree, are required to perform from memory (concertos, showpieces, solo violin). Exception: sonatas and contemporary music. CATEGORY 2 - Studies and Technique 1) Studies: (where applicable) Studies/Caprices need not be performed from memory (exception: Paganini and Wieniawski) 2) Technique: Students are required to play all technique listed for each jury from memory. Arpeggios will be taken from Carl Flesch: Scale System ( No. 5 including all inversions), scales can be based on Flesch or Galamian system Scales, Chromatic Scales and Arpeggios should all be directly connected without stops. - Scales (major, melodic, harmonic): 3 octaves, (slurred, 2 bows: 1 bow scale up, 1 bow scale down) - Arpeggios: 3 octaves (slurred, 2 bows: 1 bow arpeggio up, 1 bow arpeggio down) - Chromatic scales: 2 octaves (slurred, 2 bows: 1 bow scale up, 1 bow scale down) - Couble stops: 2 octaves (slurred, 4 notes per bow minimum) CATEGORY 3 - Orchestra Excerpts where applicable (Excerpts can be printed from this website:
