3 The SSO announces its 2015 season The 2015 season is so exciting with some of my favourite pieces and artists, that I don t know how I can wait! As I get to know the orchestra more deeply, I am in awe of their amazing artistry. We are so lucky to have such a great orchestra. David Robertson The Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director David Robertson are proud to announce their 2015 season. For his second year as Chief Conductor, David Robertson has again invited some of the world s best soloists and conductors to our shores, including violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter, Christian Tetzlaff and Gil Shaham, pianists Yuja Wang, Peter Serkin and Simon Trpčeski and the voices of Stuart Skelton, Christine Brewer and Michelle DeYoung. Robertson will be in Sydney four times during 2015 conducting music ranging from Sculthorpe and Sibelius to Beethoven and Berlioz. He ll begin in February by conducting all four Schumann symphonies over two weeks and the Season Opening Gala with Beethoven Nine, featuring and a cast of soloists including baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes. The main highlight of Robertson s second season will be an opera in the concert hall presentation of Wagner s Tristan und Isolde in June. This will see Australian Heldentenor Stuart Skelton returning home to perform his first Tristan and American artist S Katy Tucker will again transform the concert hall with her spectacular visuals. Robertson will also conduct a special performance of Holst s Planets in March and Beethoven s Missa Solemnis in October. The exquisite Anne- Sophie Mutter has clearly fallen in love with Sydney and will be returning to play Dvořák s Violin Concerto. Gil Shaham will play the Barber Violin Concerto before teaming up with his wife, fellow violinist Adele Anthony, to play Bach concertos. The magnificent Christian Tetzlaff will play the Australian premiere of Jörg Widmann s Violin Concerto, which the composer wrote for him, as well as Mendelssohn s gorgeous concerto, and Janine Jansen will play the Brahms violin concerto, conducted by her husband Daniel Blendulf. The orchestra will also continue its collaborations with other Sydney arts companies in Le Grand Tango in April sees a partnership with associate artists of Sydney Dance Company and in August John Bell will direct a musical-dramatic presentation of Romeo and Juliet with actors from Bell Shakespeare and Simone Young conducting music from Prokofiev s ballet. The main highlight of Robertson s second season will be an opera in the concert hall presentation of Wagner s Tristan und Isolde in June Another standout of the season will be a poignant tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing with our ANZAC Day Salute concert featuring the premiere of War Music by Australian composer James Ledger. Throughout 2015 the SSO will welcome the brightest young stars in conducting including Vasily Petrenko, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Jakub Hrůša, Matthias Pintscher and Ward Stare. We see also the return of two of the great master conductors, each with two programs: Charles Dutoit will conduct signature French repertoire in September, and former SSO Chief Conductor Edo de Waart will close the season with Wagner, Richard Strauss and Elgar. Two-time Grammy and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald will join the orchestra for an evening of Broadway classics as part of our Kaleidoscope series, which this year will also include James Morrison s A Z of Jazz and the brilliantly talented young string trio Time for Three (Tf3) who have taken the world by storm. In 2015 there s a huge variety of concerts with something for everyone who loves music. And with David Robertson at the helm it s set to be yet another exhilarating year for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. 4 5

It s the revolutionary creation of a man with an optimistic vision of human potential. That compassion for humanity emerges in the two very different companion pieces. Hear it in the pity inspired by Berg s wrenching interpretation of a real-life tragedy. Hear it in Bruckner s simple Christian conviction, soaring on the wings of unaccompanied voices. TRISTAN UND ISOLDE ROBERTSON CONDUCTS AN OPERA IN THE CONCERT HALL Sat 20 Jun 6pm Mon 22 Jun 6pm WAGNER Tristan und Isolde Sung in German with English surtitles. David Robertson conductor Christine Brewer soprano (Isolde) Stuart Skelton tenor (Tristan) Katarina Karnéus mezzo-soprano (Brangäne) Derek Welton bass-baritone (Kurwenal) Stephen Milling bass (King Marke) S Katy Tucker visual enhancement From the thrilling tension of its opening to the cathartic resolution of its final notes, Wagner s Tristan und Isolde sweeps you up and strings you along and takes you on an irresistible musical journey. The opera s tragic story is up there with Romeo and Juliet, a tale of sublimated passion unleashed, passion and betrayal all on a grand scale. We re bringing Stuart Skelton home to sing his first Tristan my personal Everest he calls it. The music is so sublime and I m incredibly excited to take it on in my home town He ll be joined by Christine Brewer as Isolde at the head of a top-flight cast. BACH CONCERTOS Gil Shaham & Adele Anthony Sat 4 Jul 8pm JS BACH Brandenburg Concerto No.6, BWV 1051 Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041 Violin Concerto in E major, BWV 1042 Double Violin Concerto in D minor, BWV 1043 Gil Shaham violin-director Adele Anthony violin When NASA sent music out into space on the Voyager Golden Record, one composer was represented more than any other: Johann Sebastian Bach. The peak of genius, the voice of civilisation. And in this special concert we celebrate Bach as the composer of virtuoso concertos. Husbandand-wife violinists Gil Shaham and Adele Anthony make a perfect team. Breathless and unstoppable said one review. And together they ll show off the inspired invention and down-to-earth vitality of the greatest composer of the Baroque age. ROMEO & JULIET WITH BELL SHAKESPEARE Thu 20 Aug 8pm PROKOFIEV Romeo and Juliet: Scenes from the ballet music with excerpts from Shakespeare s play Simone Young conductor John Bell director Actors from Bell Shakespeare Shakespeare s words and Prokofiev s music. Actors and an orchestra. A great tragic love story imagined for the concert hall. Two Australian legends command the stage when conductor Simone Young and director John Bell weave together scenes from Prokofiev s heartfelt ballet score and Shakespeare s deeply moving play. The gorgeous music, so full of humanity, captures the savage anger of the feuding families, the innocence of their children and the overwhelming emotions of young love. In this concert it provides the backdrop for a powerful text with all its humour, tenderness and tragedy. ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER PLAYS DVOŘÁK Wed 23 Sep 8pm Fri 25 Sep 8pm Sat 26 Sep 8pm DVOŘÁK Violin Concerto DVOŘÁK Romance for violin BEETHOVEN Symphony No.3 (Eroica) Jakub Hrůša conductor Anne-Sophie Mutter violin Now that she s found us, it seems the queen of the violin can t get enough of Australia and the feeling is mutual. Anne Sophie Mutter s recent performances with the SSO have been rewarded with thunderous standing ovations, and sparkle brightly in the memories of those lucky enough to experience them. On this third visit, she brings her peerless musical insight to Dvořák s expressive Violin Concerto and his song-like Romance for violin and orchestra. And how fitting that an evening of true greatness and heroic performance will end with Beethoven s Eroica. 7

7 LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT SCHOOLS CONCERTS More than 30,000 students will attend SSO schools concerts in 2015 at the ABC Ultimo Centre, City Recital Hall and in Sydney s western suburbs. Students in the country are set to get in on the fun too, with a further 3,000 to attend schools concerts in regional NSW. MEET THE MUSIC Our Meet the Music has two series designed to support the studies of NSW secondary school students across the full music curriculum, with each program showcasing a classic, a modern masterpiece and an Australian composer. The first series is aimed at students studying popular music in schools, and in 2015 will include concerts featuring James Morrison and the hits of Broadway. The second series includes composers ranging from Debussy, Vaughan Williams, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff to Australian composers Lentz, Schultz and Holley. The series will also include a profound centenary salute to the ANZACs by Australian composer James Ledger. TENIX DISCOVERY CONCERTS The SSO is dedicated to enriching quality music learning in the classroom and in the concert hall, inspiring learning and musical engagement for all ages. In 2015 Richard Gill and the SSO Sinfonia will take audiences on a journey of discovery through Beethoven s Symphony No.2, Mahler s Songs of a Wayfarer, Ravel s Mother Goose suite and Richard Strauss s Death and Transfiguration. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Around the country, the SSO connects with hundreds of teachers through workshops and professional learning masterclasses, presented in capital cities and regional areas in person and via the internet. The recently launched TunED Up program, which brings primary teachers from around NSW to Sydney for a week s intensive training, will continue in 2015 with workshops in late January (regional primary teachers only) and late June (for all NSW primary teachers). The SSO will also conduct a training program in western Sydney in February, which will allow teachers to involve students in a performance with the SSO during our Parramatta Park concert in March. AUSTRALIA AND BEYOND The SSO continues to develop its cross-cultural education exchange program, established in China in 2012 with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and the Xinghai Conservatorium in Guangzhou. ARTIST DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to the development of Australia s future orchestral musicians, giving young people access to training by SSO musicians and other leaders in the classical music world from across Australia and around the globe. PLAYERLINK Playerlink gives aspiring young musicians from regional NSW a chance to receive intensive tutorials, orchestral rehearsals and performance experience with SSO musicians. Playerlink is open to students in Years 5 12, and in 2015 it will be held in Bellingen on 6, 7, 8 November, hosted by Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium and Bellingen High School. SSO SINFONIA This training and mentoring ensemble provides exceptional tertiary students with invaluable experience working alongside SSO musicians as part of a performing orchestra, primarily as part of the Tenix Discovery series and also through regional touring across NSW. SSO FELLOWSHIP Premier Partner: Credit Suisse The Fellowship is a one-year intensive program, offering talented young orchestral musicians under the age of 30 a stepping stone from study to full-time work. The Fellowship is set to expand in 2015 with up to 17 positions on offer. For the first time in the program s 13-year history, brass players and percussionists are eligible to apply alongside string and woodwind players
