Hiidlaste rahvaluules on 20. sajandil põimunud erinevad, lausa kontrastsed kultuurikihid. Arhailised küsimus-vastus ahellaulud ja algriimilised regilaulud on pikka aega elanud kõrvuti uuemate riimiliste salmilaulude, rahvapäraste koraalide ja rahvalike lauludega. Vanemalt uuemale laulukultuurile üleminekul on tekkinud siirdevormilised laulud, milles on nii regilaulule (algriim, paralleelvärsid, kitsa heliulatusega meloodia) kui ka uuemale laulule (lõppriim, salmid, laia heliulatusega meloodia) iseloomulikke jooni. Hiidlastele on omased ka 3/4 taktis labajalavalsi viisidel lauldud humoorikad tantsulaulud, millesse on sobitatud pillihelide imitatsioone. Kuigi Hiiumaad on peetud uuemate rahvalaulude pärusmaaks, on hiidlastelt kogutud arvestatav hulk regilaule. Saateks 9

10 Lõppriimilistest salmilauludest võib Hiiumaal aastatel noorte seas soositud ringmänge kuulda Tiiu Elbachi, Marta Kalju, Aino Engso ja Sibille Tärgi heas esituses. Sibille Tärk laulis kogumiku koostajale veel aasta juunis mitu aastate lõpul Emmastes mängitud laulumängu ja andis põhjalikke seletusi omaaegsetest mängu-, laulu- ja tantsu tavadest. Heliplaadil on lustlikke külalaule Agnes Kaljult ja Elli Küttimilt, meremehelaule Selma Karjamaalt, Alma Hõbessaarelt ja Joann Laidilt ning romantilisi ballaade Helene Põldverelt jt. Haruldaseks näiteks on Liisa Siisbergilt paar aastat enne Teist maailmasõda salvestatud kaunistusterohke meloodiaga rahvapärane koraal. Eriliselt väärtusliku materjalina on kogumikus teadaolevalt vanimad eesti rahvamuusika helisalvestused Hiiumaa meremehe Jüri (Georg) Bruusi aastal mängitud hiiu kandle lood. Soomerootsi muusikateadlase Otto Anderssoni poolt Helsingis fonografeeritud kuuest hiiu kandle palast on plaadile valitud kaks Hiiumaa pärimusele iseloomulikku labajalavalssi. Plaadil on ka valik Eesti viimase torupillisuguvõsa kuulsaima pillimehe Juhan Maakeri alias Torupilli Jussi poolt 1921 Emmastes helilooja Cyrillus Kreegi fonograafile mängitud 38 torupilli loost.

INTRODUCTION The set of discs Traditional Songs, Instrumental Pieces and Dances of Hiiumaa contains a selection of older and newer musical tradition of Hiiumaa across more than a hundred years. The CD and DVD discs comprise of the examples of songs, instrumental music and dances characteristic to Hiiumaa islanders folk culture recorded during The main source of the publication is the Estonian Folklore Archives. Some examples are from the archives of the Finnish Literature Society, Sibelius Museum in Finland and Estonian Public Broadcasting. The folklore of Hiiumaa islanders has combined during the 20th century various, almost contrasting layers of culture. The archaic chain songs of question-answer structure and alliterative runosongs have long existed side by side with newer end-rhymed stanza songs, folk chorals and popular songs. The change from older to newer song culture brought transitional songs, which carry characteristic features of runosongs (alliteration, parallel verses, melody of narrow range of pitch) as well as newer songs (end-rhyme, stanzas, melody of wide range of pitch). To Hiiumaa singers are inherent also humorous dance songs with imitations of instrumental sounds sang to flatfoot waltz melodies in 3/4 metre. Despite Hiiumaa generally being considered an area of newer songs, a considerable number of runosongs have been collected there. Thus the opening pieces of the CD are the runo-verse song and transitional songs from the wedding cycle, recorded on a wax cylinder in 1933 from the folk singer Leena Elmi. The persistence of older musical heritage of Hiiumaa islanders is also confirmed by the chain songs and children s songs recorded from Aino Engso and Sibille Tärk as recently as Several other songs from great-grandparents time are decorously represented by Leeni Jõgi, Lisette Lauri, Elena Paju and Ella Erk. Some rare threshing songs that belong to the archaic community tradition were recorded from a Kõpu singer and folklore collector Elli Küttim in From her were also collected older children s and calendar songs, newer circle game and dance songs, and bagpipe imitations that are characteristic of Hiiumaa musical tradition. One interesting example of a traditional dance song has been recorded as well from August Mölder, who sang an imitation of bagpipe that was followed by a song text that consisted of family names of the village residents. Introduction 13

14 The tradition of end-rhymed stanza songs is represented by circle games that were well-liked among Hiiumaa young people in the 1930s and can be heard in the good performance of Tiiu Elbach, Marta Kalju, Aino Engso and Sibille Tärk. In June of 2017 Sibille Tärk sang to the compiler of this set several song games played in Emmaste in the late1930s and provided thorough explanations of the traditions of that time concerning games, songs and dances. On this CD are also merry village songs by Agnes Kalju and Elli Küttim, seamen s songs by Selma Karjamaa, Alma Hõbessaar and Joann Laid, romantic ballads by Helene Põldvere and others. A rare song example is a folk choral with richly ornamented melody recorded from Liisa Siisberg a couple of years before World War II. Very valuable materials of the collection are confessedly the oldest recordings of Estonian traditional music the bowed harp (Est hiiu kannel) melodies played in 1908 by Jüri (Georg) Bruus, seaman from Hiiumaa. Two flatfoot waltzes, characteristic of Hiiumaa tradition, were choosen for the CD from six bowed harp pieces that Finnish-Swedish musicologist Otto Andersson phonographed in Helsinki. The CD also contains a selection from 38 bagpipe pieces of the most famous representative of the last family of Estonian bagpipers, Juhan Maaker alias Torupilli [Bagpipe] Juss, recorded in 1921 in Emmaste by Estonian composer Cyrillus Kreek. Juss s nephew, Aleksander Maaker, could still be heard in 1968 playing the bagpipe and concertina at the parties of Hiiumaa islanders. Both musicians are represented on the disc set as instrument players and singers. Especially are worth pointing out Juss s merry dance songs that he sang to Finnish musicologist Armas Otto Väisänen in We can get some idea of the lively style of Hiiumaa fiddlers due to Aleksander Kärner from Kassari and Juhan Mikk from Emmaste. With their traditional repertoire they both continue the playing traditions of the legendary folk fiddler and song-maker Leika Aadu, who lived in Hiiumaa in Hiiumaa luthier Johannes Sooster is represented on the disc by the so-called everyman s instrument mandolin, which gained popularity on the island in the 1930s. He plays the polka that originates from Kõpu peninsula and has been associated with the notorious guy rope chopping pirates. The concertina playing, which spread in Hiiumaa at the end of the 19th century, is represented well by August Tammest, whose repertoire also contained an old dance of a soup, also known as a broth lady, that was already rare in the 1970s. Tammest s concertina tradition was continued by his sister-in-law, Daimi Tulp, the leader of Hiiumaa folk instrumental playing and folk dancing, who

performs on the disc one of the versions of Hiiumaa traditional dance, Hiiu waltz. The gem of the videodisc is a mute film about folklore expedition of the Estonian Institute of Language and Literature to Hiiumaa in Thanks to this collecting trip to state border zone made by Loreida Raudsep, Ruth Mirov, Helgi Kihno, Heino Pedusaar and other co-workers, Aleksander Kärner s thrilling fiddle-playing techniques, Tiiu Elbach s masterful acting as a leader of a circle game and shots of the erstwhile Hiiumaa everyday life have been preserved for us. Via another unique film material can we meet the legendary Hiiumaa folk singer Elli Küttim. The recording dates back to summer 1979 when the folklore-expedition members from the folklore department of Estonian Literary Museum (Erna Tampere, Vaike Sarv, Anu Vissel, Ingrid Rüütel and others) and Estonian Television film crew (lead by Ave Alavainu and Irene Lään) collaborated on making a television film The Island of Legends. On the DVD can also be seen contemporary video recordings of Hiiumaa children s songs from Sibille Tärk, stanza songs of her youth from Roleida Räis, grandmother s ballad from Õie Jõemaa and popular song from the twins Maimu Kallas and Taimi Mark. Hiiumaa islanders just cannot do without games and dancing, when hearing a tune played or sung. This is confirmed by the video recordings of the folk dance group Dagö and Iiukala band during the last decade. The pursuit of folk culture has brought together an efficient community, who have revived the local traditions by collecting heritage among Hiiumaa islanders older generation and researching folklore in the archives. Watching the present activities of folk culture circles of Hiiumaa, it could be said that the island s original musical tradition with its merry village songs, dynamic circle games and considerable number of versions of Hiiu waltz continues its existence in an adapted form. I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone, who helped this two-disc set of Hiiumaa folk music to become a reality by good advice and actions: Maimo Hõbessaar, Helle-Mare Kõmmus, Helgi Põllo, Tõnu Soop, Sibille Tärk, Ingrid Rüütel, Taive Särg, Maido Selgmäe, coworkers and friends from Finnish Literature Society, Sibelius Museum, Estonian Public Broadcasting archive, Hiiumaa Museum and the publication production team. I wish everyone joy of (re)discovery of Hiiumaa traditional music! Helen Kõmmus Introduction 15
