1 MUSIC PREPARATORY & MUSIC DIPLOMA Audition Information for Fall 2018 All applicants to the Music Preparatory and Music Diploma program are required to audition as part of the admission requirements for these programs. There are two parts to the overall admission process: 1. Performance audition (includes performance, musical aptitude tests, and interview) 2. Music theory placement exam (required to be considered for the diploma program) This document will provide information on the audition scheduling process, audition dates and locations, specific audition material and additional requirements. You may only schedule an audition after applying to Red Deer College ( Auditions are held on the RDC campus. Candidates are strongly encouraged to audition in-person whenever possible. RDC recognizes that travel can be costly and will consider a recorded audition for applicants living further than 300 kilometers from Red Deer. Program Placement College music study assumes that an acceptable standard of proficiency on an instrument or in voice has already been acquired prior to entering college. The admission process is the same for both the Preparatory and Music Diploma programs. The results of the audition determine your program placement. Admission to the Music Diploma program To be considered for a position in the Music Diploma program you must demonstrate competence in the following areas: A performance audition which displays competency on your principal instrument. Successful completion of the theory placement exam or submission of applicable exemption documents. Evidence of musical aptitude. Evidence of ability to vocally match a given pitch. Evidence that you understand your strengths and weaknesses and have given thought to establishing your musical goals. Admission to the Music Preparatory program If you demonstrate potential but need additional foundational training in practical and/or theoretical areas, you may be offered a position in the Music Preparatory program.

Current contact information is essential for prompt notification of audition results. What to bring to your audition? Submit the Music Information Profile located on pages 13 and 14 by to the School of Creative Arts at creativearts@rdc.ab.ca at least ONE WEEK PRIOR to your audition date. Please bring photo ID and a pencil with you if you are writing the Theory Placement Exam. Remember to bring your instrument, sheet music, and accompanist (or recorded tracks) if applicable.

3 Is it possible to audition off-campus? Red Deer College recognizes that travel can be costly and will consider a recorded audition for applicants living further than 300 kilometers from Red Deer. Please contact us at creativearts@rdc.ab.ca or for instructions on how to complete an off-site audition. If you choose this option, you may be required to complete certain aspects of the audition when you arrive at the college in the fall (i.e. sight-reading, aural tests). Off-site auditions that do not adhere to the specified guidelines of the recorded audition will not be considered. Audition Results You will be notified once a decision is made. There are five possible options: an offer of admission to the Music Preparatory program; or an offer of admission to the Music Diploma program; or an offer to re-audition upon upgrading your musical skills or theory knowledge; or waitlisted status (you would be offered admission upon a seat becoming available); a referral to another program of study at Red Deer College A candidate whose application was unsuccessful but who wishes to undertake musical upgrading with the objective of possible future admission should consult the Advising & Recruiting Specialist at creativearts@rdc.ab.ca.

4 Performance Audition You will have declared a principal instrument (i.e. guitar, voice, piano, etc.) on your application to RDC. You will present a performance audition on this instrument. The audition consists of the following elements: A polished performance of two contrasting pieces of your choice that demonstrates your playing or singing abilities. A demonstration of technical skills appropriate to your instrument (i.e. scales, arpeggios, chords, long tones, tonguing, etc.). Specific guidelines for each instrument are listed at the end of this document. Aural tests (i.e. recognition of chord qualities and melodic intervals, clap-back of rhythmic patterns, ability to match pitch and sing a familiar melody in tune). Playing or singing a brief, unfamiliar excerpt at sight. A Basic piano exemption test (for applicants with previous keyboard training). How long will the audition last? Performance auditions are scheduled for 30 minutes. Remember that you will write the Theory Placement Exam on the scheduled day of your audition and will have two (2) hours to complete this exam. Can I warm up prior to the audition? Yes. Come to the Arts Centre information desk 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time and you will be directed to a practice room for warming up. Please bring a piece of ID to exchange for a practice room key. How should I select my performance pieces? Choose at least two contrasting pieces that suitably demonstrate your skill level. Styles could include, but are not limited to: classical, jazz, musical theatre, pop, rock, country, gospel, etc. Do I need to bring copies of the score for the pieces I am performing? Yes, if they are available. Can I bring an accompanist to my audition? Yes, although it is not mandatory. RDC will not provide accompaniment. If you wish, you can bring a recording to accompany your selections.

5 What equipment will be available for my audition? We will provide a piano, music stand, a guitar or bass amp, a drum set and most percussion instruments as needed. Please bring your own patch cords, drum sticks, and reeds. Any further equipment requirements are to be requested prior to your audition. Be fully prepared. Will I be required to sight-read? Yes. One component of the audition is playing or singing an excerpt of unfamiliar music at sight. The excerpt will be less difficult than the performance level required for admission. I am not a vocalist. Why do I need to be able to match pitch? All musicians need to be able to imitate and match a fixed pitch. This is an essential skill to be able to sing or play notes in tune. For instance, when a musician tunes a guitar, he or she must precisely locate a fixed pitch. The other strings will be tuned in relation to this pitch. What can I do to prepare for the aural test? Ideally, you will have a teacher help you practice matching pitch. Alternatively, you can record yourself singing along to a song that you know well and listen to your efforts. There are numerous online resources and computer programs that offer interactive exercises that will help you practice and gain competency in this area. What is the Basic Piano exemption test? Two semesters of Basic Piano group instruction are required of all non-piano majors in both the Preparatory and Diploma programs. Applicants with previous keyboard training may be exempted from one or both of these courses. As part of the audition, competency may be demonstrated by playing two pieces at or above the Level 4 in the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) or Conservatory Canada syllabus. Selections are to be written in standard notation (i.e. not lead sheets or unwritten compositions) with a copy of the original score brought to the audition. Technique (2 octaves, hands together at a moderate tempo): o Scales -- D, A, B-flat, & E-flat major; B, F-sharp, G, & C minor (harmonic and melodic) o Triads -- D, A, B-flat, & E-flat major; B, F-sharp, G, & C minor (broken and solid, finishing with I - V - I cadence) o Arpeggios D & A major; G & C minor (root position only)

6 I already play the piano. Do I need to take the Basic Piano exemption test? No. Applicants that have attained Level 4 certification or higher in the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) or Conservatory Canada can bring along their official transcripts to the audition to waive the Basic Piano exemption test. What if there are some components of the audition with which I am unfamiliar? Contact the at creativearts@rdc.ab.ca, or , or ask a music teacher you respect to explain the requirements and how you might best prepare. While we do look at your current ability, we also take your future potential into consideration, realizing that not every applicant will have the same background and experience.

7 Theory Placement Exam What is the format of the exam? The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions focusing on various elements of music theory. You are required to take a music theory placement examination the same day as your scheduled performance audition. A score of 75% or higher is required for admission into the Music Diploma program. The result of this exam is one of the factors used to determine whether you are placed in the Music Diploma program or the Music Preparatory program. You may be exempt from this exam if you: Provide an official transcript of theory study from the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) in Level 8 Theory (formerly Advanced Rudiments) or an equivalent program of study. Have completed Introductory Music Theory II at RDC with a grade of 75% or higher on the final exam. Provide an official transcript from a corresponding music theory course from another recognized institution including a course outline (course outlines may be required.). I applied for the Music Preparatory program. Am I still required to write the Theory Placement Exam? No, although all applicants that wish to be considered for the Music Diploma program are required to write the Theory Placement Exam on the same day as their scheduled audition or prove exemption status. If you choose not to write the Theory Placement Exam, you will only be considered for the Music Preparatory program. How does Theory Placement Exam testing take place? This two hour exam will take place in a group session on the same day as your scheduled audition. The exam is usually written in the RDC Test Centre on the main campus; the exact time and location will be provided to you when you schedule your audition date.
