2 STRINGS AT TACHED A musical extravaganza featuring unique conversations between two very different instruments, the violin and the Saraswati veena. It is presented by the husband-wife team of violin maestro Sri. R. Kumaresh and veena exponent Jayanthi Kumaresh, two innovative artists of Carnatic Music. With Strings Attached, the artists take their audience through a journey of thoughts, ideas, debates with different viewpoints and exciting climaxes - all in the language of Indian Classical (Carnatic) music. The violin and veena are sharply different - bow and pluck, fretless and fretted, vertical and horizontal. This husband-wife duo bring out the most important connection - the 2000-year-old tradition of Carnatic music - and creates an experience of tonal variations, spontaneity and brilliance.
3 R. KUMARESH The Fiddlingmonk A child Prodigy, he started his performance career at the age 5 even before his kindergarten year and finished his 100th stage concert by the age of 10. With more than four decades of concert experience many times across the globe, he is renowned for his expert playing techniques and expressions on the violin. His violin duos along with his brother R.Ganesh are a great sensation world over. Kumaresh is the youngest artiste in Violin to be awarded the A TOP grade, the highest Grade awarded by the All India Radio, the only grading body for Classical music in India. At 17, he was the youngest violinist to be made the official State Artiste of Tamilnadu, India and the Youngest violinist to receive State award -Kalaimamani. He is the recipient of many other awards including Sunadha Siromani, Sangeetha Saragnya,"Violin Gana Mani". He founded one of the earliest band of world music in India called BRAHMMA along with his brother Ganesh, featuring Vikku Vinayakaram, Sivamani, Keith Peters, Nadaka and Selva Ganesh. A wonderful collaborator, he has performed with many legends such as tabla Ustad Zakir Hussain, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Palghat Raghu, Sitar maestro Ustad Shahid Parvez, Shujaat Khan, Flautist Ronu Mazumdar, Steve Thornton, Saxophonist George Brooks with bands such as Indian Ocean and Trio AAB at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. He has enthralled audiences at international festivals such as Doverlane festival, Karlzhue jazz festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival, Darbar festival and at prestigious venues such as Queen Elizabeth hall, London, Walt Disney Auditorium LA, Lincoln Centre, NY, Theatre de la Ville, Paris. Kumaresh has recorded for world renowned Labels such as Times Music, Music Today, Sa re ga ma, Sense World and Home Records. A pioneer, he has created a new genre in Carnatic Music called Ragapravaham by composing several exclusive melodies for instruments. A composer, he has scored music for several productions and his music won the award for the "Best Original Music Score" for the National award winning film Lessons in forgetting. An actor, he has starred in films including an award winning Tamil film directed by ace film director K.Balachander. A guru, he has been conducting yearly master classes and workshops on Violin techniques for the past 4 years for advanced students, with many international students flying in to participate in these classes. He has composed several Violin based structured melodies for students to enhance their bowing and fingering techniques in violin. An art connoisseur, he is the founder of the music company Home Records that produces and promotes music and new ideas with the motto Art for art s sake. Maestro. R. Kumaresh brings an impeccable and remarkable technique both in playing the instrument and in interpreting the musical forms. His music is laden with virtuosity and brims with soul stirring creativity abundant with joy.
4 JAYANTHI KUMARESH A sixth generation musician Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh has been captivating audiences around the world for 30 years now and is one of the leading Veena artistes today. She began playing the Veena since age of 3 and is one of the youngest veena artistes to receive the A-TOP grading, the highest from All India Radio. Apart from several prestigious venues and festivals in India, Jayanthi has performed at several international festivals such as San Francisco Jazz Festival, Darbar festival, Queensland Music Festival, Darwin Music Festival, Adelaide Music Festival and at prestigious venues such as U.N, New York, Palladium, Indiana, Theatre de la Ville, Paris, Northwest folklife festival, Seattle. A six-time recipient of The Music Academy, Chennai s Award for Veena, she has also received many awards in India including Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Veena Naada Mani, Sangeetha Choodamani, Kala Ratna, Sathyashree and Gaana Varidhi to name a few. A collaborator, she has performed with legends such as tabla Ustad Zakir Hussain, Violin Maestro Shri. R. Kuamaresh, Flautist Ronu Majumdar, Bombay Jayashree, Sudha Raghunathan, Kala Ramnath, and the like. A pioneer, she founded the Indian National Orchestra, where 21 musicians playing different Indian instruments come together under one banner to showcase Indian classical music. A researcher, she holds a Doctorate for her work on styles and playing techniques of the Saraswathi veena and conducts workshops and lecture demonstrations around the world. A composer, she has scored music for several dance productions and musicals. Her music for the dance ballet Krishna Bhakthi for Rasika, Portland featured both the Carnatic and Hindustani styles of compositions. She composed and released the album "Mysterious Duality" which is a multi-dimensional reflection of the simple yet complex self - through a single instrument, the Veena. The artist has played 7 different Veena tracks and this album is one of its kind. Jayanthi has recorded for world renowned Labels such as Times Music, Music Today, Sa re ga ma, Sense World and Home Records. The niece of Violin Legend Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Jayanthi attributes what she is today to her maternal aunt and guru, Smt.Padmavathy Ananthagopalan, whose training helped Jayanthi evolve as an artiste. Her mother Smt. Lalgudi Rajalakshmi first introduced her to music and she is also fortunate to have trained later under Veena Virtuoso Dr. S. Balachander. Blending the traditional and the innovative in her music in terms of content, technique, virtuosity and expression, Jayanthi seeks to express the true voice of the veena, which transcends the boundaries of language and region.
