2 L I S Z T A C A D E M Y, S E P T E M B E R 2016 martoncompetition.hu CANDIDATES The contest is open to singers from all nationalities aged minimum 18 years on the opening day of the competition and born on or after 19 September 1984 for female candidates 19 September 1981 for male candidates. ROUNDS The competition is divided into a qualifying round by video and three live competition rounds held at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Budapest. The Gala performance will take place at the Hungarian State Opera. The entire live competition is open to the public. The competition will be live broadcast from the Liszt Academy. PRIZES Grand Prix 1st prize 2nd prize 3rd prize Prizes cannot be shared. Special prizes including the Éva Marton Prize by the Hungarian Academy of Arts, performance opportunities and scholarships will also be awarded. APPLICATION FEE 150 (to be paid only by the qualified candidates passing to the Preliminary round)

3 I I. INTERNATIONAL LIVE ROUNDS REPERTOIRE Candidates prepare one Liszt song plus altogether seven opera arias. PRELIMINARY One Liszt song and two arias representing different styles, characters. (Candidates present one aria of their choice. The second aria is performed only if requested so by the jury.) SEMI-FINAL Two arias representing different styles, characters (candidates present both arias). FINAL Three arias representing different styles, characters, preferably selected from the competition s list of operas (see martoncompetition.hu). Candidates present two arias: one chosen by the candidate and one by the jury. All pieces are to be sung from memory, in the original key and original language, and in full version (including recitativo, cabaletta, stretta if appropriate). All selected arias are to be listed on the application form (changes are permitted until 31 May 2016). Preliminary and Semi-final rounds take place with piano accompaniment. In the Final and the Gala, competitors will be accompanied by the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Balázs Kocsár. The competition organizers supply experienced piano accompanists free of charge for the competitors. Candidates may bring their own accompanists, in which case they are responsible for all their costs. The International Jury acts under the presidency of Éva Marton and will be composed of distinguished experts such as Christina Scheppelmann, Miguel Lerín, Vittorio Terranova, Szilveszter Ókovács et al.

5 LOOKING BACK TO THE I. INTERNATIONAL ÉVA MARTON SINGING COMPETITION The Liszt Academy announced the I. International Éva Marton Singing Competition on 4 December Women aged and men aged in any voice category could apply in the qualifier of the four-round competition via the martoncompetition.hu website or by post by 31 March Besides attracting considerable attention from China, Japan, South Korea, Romania, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine, there were also entries from many other parts of the world, from Iran to Nigeria, from the USA to Australia, from the Philippines to Israel, including 20 countries in Europe.

6 The almost 150 applicants were evaluated on the basis of their submitted video material by a qualification jury chaired by Éva Marton. On the basis of their decision announced on 15 May 2014, a total of 77 entrants from 26 countries including 11 Hungarians went through to the rounds held between September The eleven competitors making it through to the Final sang in the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy, accompanied by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ádám Medveczky. As a result of discussion that ran far into the night, the jury of eight members, all of them outstanding representatives of the international opera world, awarded the Grand Prix to 26-year-old mezzo-sopran Szilvia Vörös. 29-year-old Romanian baritone Alexandru Aghenie received first prize. The 30-year-old Ukrainian soprano, Tetiana Zhuravel, collected second prize and 28-year-old Polish soprano Marcelina Beucher won third prize. The audience could also vote for singers in the intermission of the Final. Thus, the Audience Prize went to the second prize winner, Tetiana Zhuravel. The Finals were streamed live and recorded in FullHD by Liszt Academy s AVISO Studio in collaboration with Hungarian Television (MTVA). The Final, the awards ceremony and the webcast were created by creative producer Imre Szabó Stein, Director of Communications of the Liszt Academy. All multimedia material including photos, audio recordings, the webcast and the 90-minute documentary film shot during the competition by Hungarian Television (MTVA) and commissioned by the Liszt Academy s Communications Directorate and details of the I. International Éva Marton Singing Competition are available at martoncompetition.hu.

7 APPLICATION MATERIAL To be uploaded at martoncompetition.hu (preferred) or sent by post to the competition secretariat: A completed application form including full competition repertoire (changes are permitted until 31 May 2016) A photocopy of current passport A professional personal headshot photograph (jpg, min. 2 MB, 300 dpi) A professional biography ( characters) listing professional studies, as well as competitions, master classes, stage experience over the last three years Video recording of two arias of the applicant s choice matching the following criteria: one Baroque aria (from an opera, oratorio, cantata) and one opera aria from a different period (mp4, max. 300 MB each) Only high quality and recent recordings (taken on or after 31 March 2015) will be accepted. Audio recordings and other video formats will not be considered. The recording should show the applicant and his/her accompaniment (pianist, orchestra etc.) and each piece should be recorded in a single take (no editing permitted). Works presented on this recording may be included in the programme of the live competition. Only complete application material will be considered.
