1 FLUTE Beginning Band Supply List 1. Folding music stand for home practice 2. pencil needed for class every day 3. metronome/ tuner combo - TE Tuner app on i-pad or phone or a Korg TM name/ luggage tag attached to case at all times!!! 5. 3-ring, 1 black binder with pockets for homework and handouts 6. 5-Minute Theory book by Wessels (purchase from a music store instrument specific) 7. Essential Elements for Band method book for your instrument 9. locker size mirror to put on your stand for use in class and at home FLUTE - Open hole, with plugs and tuning rod 1. Choose one of the following flutes with the off-set G key: Di Zhao 270 and higher Northbridge NB-500 Pearl 505 Quantz Jupiter 511 RSO or 511RBSO Yamaha 262 or higher (may need to purchase flute from a flute specialty store.) 2. flute swab 3. polishing cloth This list of instruments has been compiled for the purpose of helping parents obtain quality beginner level instruments. While intermediate and top-of-the-line model instruments would be advantageous to the student, these student models are most commonly used by beginning students with much success. Please be advised that department store, pawn shop, family heirloom, and rummage sale instruments may be cheap, but often have flaws and need a great deal of repair. It is usually best to give students good instruments so they will likely have great success and motivation. Nothing makes a student not want to play more than a poor working instrument. Be warned of non-music stores selling band instruments - music stores will likely not repair them, and you will have wasted your money on a very poor quality instrument. If you need assistance, contact a local band director. We will have a final instrument drive at BB6 on the second day of school. Feel free to put down a deposit on an instrument over the summer. Please, do NOT let your child mess with their instrument if you get one over the summer. We do not want them to damage a new instrument accidentally or form poor habits that will take months to fix Trust us we ve seen some very interesting things

10 As soon as your child gets their theory book, please have him/her bring it to school with their name clearly marked on it. We will have an instrument drive on the second day of school, August 29 th, at which time you can pay us/misd cash or check for the use of the school owned instrument (a one-time fee for the school year for oboe, bassoon, French horn, euphonium and tuba). Both a parent and child will have to sign an agreement that you will take good care of the instrument. Instruments will be sent home when their teacher thinks that the class is ready and trustworthy of properly caring for it. Each student will be assigned a particular instrument and serial number. You can get the mouthpiece and cleaning supplies and books either at that time, or during this summer. Students who are not assigned to play a school owned instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone) will have the opportunity to rent or purchase their instrument from a music vendor. It is probably best if you can secure your instrument during the summer, but this would be the last chance to get your instrument. Students will not need their instruments until Tuesday, September 5 th. I should be able to monitor the music stores deliveries to the school. If you do not get your instrument/supplies from a vendor who comes to our school weekly, I may not be able to help you with delivery problems. Please ask your dealer about their repair policies. You may bring your supplies before September 5 th, if you have them. Each student will be assigned a shelf in the band room. I can go through their supplies and be sure he/she has the correct items. Be sure there is a name/ luggage tag on the case. Please do not let your child try to play his/her instrument yet. Please let us show them how to properly assemble and make sounds. Remember that 6 th grade is the most expensive year because you have to purchase many supplies and an instrument. You do not need to buy an instrument again until you want a step up instrument usually in high school. I look forward to meeting all of you. We will have a GREAT year! Susan G. Daniell, sdaniell@magnoliaisd.org
