10 208 MEA Guitar All-State audition items p. 9 Tips and strategies or preparing to sightread at an audition ) Kno the parameters o the sightreading portion o the audition PRIOR to the audition- dierences in the length, rhythmic diiculty (monophonic or polyphonic), st position or upper position, musical markings or not, etc., can dramatically change the diiculty level o the sightreading test. Knoing the length o revie time prior to testing can also have an impact on your psyche in the moment and thereore the quality o test result. or this audition, read and amiliarize yoursel ith the sightreading criteria printed on the 208 MEA Guitar All-State Audition Items document. 2) Practice sightreading- it may sound obvious, but purposeully and regularly practicing sightreading should increase your sightreading score. Sightreading is a skill that can be developed, reined and perected just as any other musical skill. Generally speaking, the more time spent doing the skill, the better the result ill be. or this audition, obtain an abundance o print materials similar to examples -3 and SIGHTREAD!! 3) Research musical terms and symbols- or the most accurate sightreading results, research the olloing: tempo indications (allegro, adagio, etc.), dynamic markings (cresc., piano, ortissimo, etc.), articulation markings (staccato, marcato, various accents, etc.), guitar-speciic technique indications (dolce, ponticello, 5th pos., etc.) and other standard musical instructions (legato, con brio, sing eel, etc.). or this audition, one strategy could be to create a glossary o common terms and symbols dran rom several dierent text/print resources. You ill be more likely to remember terms and symbols i you chart them by hand. 4) BUILD conidence in your ability to sightread- apprehension, nervousness and ear should be supplanted by conidence, ability, and calm execution through careul preparation o items -3 above. BECOME a great sightreader! Rationale or sightreading at the audition Why is sightreading a part o the 208 MEA All-State Guitar Audition? The ability to successully sightread an excerpt o standard notation demonstrates that your musical skills are beyond the preparation o only the prepared items. Secondly, a successul sightreading test result is a strong indicator that you are capable o arriving at the irst rehearsal having learned all o your parts ith the high level o accuracy.
