4 ABSTRACT O THE THESIS ilm Comosition, Creation, and Realization o Three Original Shorts by Stehanie Celeste Economou Master o Arts in Music University o Caliornia, Los Angeles, 01 roessor Michael Dean, Co-Chair roessor eter Golub, Co-Chair ilm Comosition, Creation, and Realization o Three Original Shorts is comrised o three musical comositions accomanying original short ilms created by UCLA ilmmakers o the School o Theater, ilm, and Television. The score to uturebook emloys an instrumentation o oodinds, strings, har, and ercussion. The mystical and comedic sirit o the ilm demands an imbalanced, yet intriguing mystery hich enveloes the score ith various orchestral colors. The sound-design-driven underscore o Heart-Ache mimics the bare, monochromatic style o the animation. The lack o leading thematic material ushes the boundaries o other musical elements, ith a directed ocus on carving out sonic sace and sculting an illusory environment in hich the vieer can exerience the icture. Te Quiero Un Chingo requires a dee sense o emotional and cultural connection to the onscreen characters, hich is relected stylistically through reeating melodic and motivic igures. This musical score exlores character themes, hile simultaneously balancing the intimate and delicate relationshis ith a hybrid electronic-acoustic score. ii
