6 Information on the Jazz Curriculum h General Theoretical Subjects Information on the general theoretical subjects (harmony, analysis, ear training and harmonization) and the entrance exam. Jan Faas, room 4.04 Ear Training admissions exam at the piano Information on ear training and the function of this course within the program and in preparing for the admissions exam. Dirk Keijzer, room 4.07 HAP (Harmony at the Piano) / Piano as an elective subject Knowledge of jazz harmony is essential to performing in a group, as a soloist and to improvising. The best way to learn harmony is by practicing it on the piano. During HAP you will learn how to interpret and play a melody with a chord scheme. After successfully completing HAP, students can opt for piano as an elective, enabling students to become even more proficient at playing the piano. Berend van den Berg, room 4.33 Music Business & Career In present times, a good career in music requires more than excellent musical skills. Especially in the beginning, there are many things that you will have to take care of yourself: arranging concerts, recording, promoting, and managing the financial part of it all. To prepare you for this situation, the jazz department offers an intense program that helps you work out your own projects, containing lectures from guest teachers from the music business, practical skills courses (website, presentation skills), and more. Co de Kloet and Bodhi Sykora, room 4.08 Research Jazz Master Programma A practice-based project forms an important part of the Master. With their project, students try to find answers to questions from their performance practice. Topics evolve around repertoire, the notes, education, cultural interaction, and instruments. Examples from last years are the Flamenco trombone, life and work of Kenny Dorham, fiddle tunes on the double bass, North Indian rhythmic cadences in jazz-oriented contexts, and Herbie Hancock on guitar. Yaniv Nachum, room

7 Master Electives Master electives are immersed courses in music history, music theory, arranging, Practical studio & Music technology, etc. During this info meeting, information will be shared about the content of the courses as well as the design of the electives program (requirements, study points). Advise for future master students is also possible. Barbara Bleij, room 4.04 Ensemble Program The ensemble program is an essential part of the curriculum of the jazz department. This comprehensive and structural program offers students the practical experience they need. It stimulates their own creativity and ensures that they gain the skills necessary to successfully function in the music world of today. David de Marez Oyens en Maarten van der Grinten, room
