1 The Music Man Audition Info Audition dates and time slots: (plan to come to only one) Sunday 5/14, 6-7 for youth entering grades 3-8 Sunday 5/14, 7-9 for youth entering grades 9 and up, all adults Monday 5/15, 6-7 for youth entering grades 3-8 Monday 5/15, 7-9 for youth entering grades 9 and up, all adults Callbacks: Wednesday 5/17, 6-10 pm by invitation only *Additional audition or callback times can be arranged if necessary; please contact us if you are unable to make an audition time slot. Location: Geneseo Central School auditorium, 4050 Avon Rd., Geneseo, NY The Music Man requires a large cast and the directors are seeking actors entering grade 3 and up, including high school, college & adult performers to be considered for roles in this musical. There are speaking roles for adults and children, and ensemble roles for all ages. See the complete character list on the next page. For the first round of auditions, bring 32 bars of any song (preferably NOT from the musical The Music Man) and come dressed and prepared to dance. No sandals, flip flops, short or tight skirts. Near the end of each time slot, all auditioners will be taught a dance which you will then perform in small groups. All performers should be comfortable acting, singing, and dancing by themselves on stage (younger children may not be ready for this). Please bring a completed audition form and rehearsal schedule with all conflicts marked, and indicate ones that are flexible as I will try to give larger parts to people with fewer conflicts. NO CONFLICTS ARE ADMISSIBLE FROM THE FIRST DAY OF TECH THROUGH THE FINAL PERFORMANCE. Callbacks on Wednesday are by invitation only and will be broken into groups by role. You will be notified by Tuesday as to what callbacks we would like you to attend. Those interested in major roles should be familiar with the musical by the day of callbacks; several versions of cast albums are available online via itunes, there are two movie versions, and you can visit the MTI web site for show info: We will teach music and provide scenes at callbacks. We will generally rehearse Sunday afternoons and Mondays through Thursdays, 6-9 until school is out, then 6-10 pm. For the first month we will rehearse at Geneseo Central School, then on Sunday June 18 we will move to Brodie Hall on the SUNY Geneseo Campus. We will take the evening of July 3 off for Ring of Fire and July 4 is negotiable. We go into tech on Friday July 7, on Geneseo Festival Weekend, then work every day through opening, Thursday July 13. See the complete schedule for further detail. We also need help building and running The Music Man. One adult per child performer is expected to volunteer in some capacity, whether sewing, building, painting, selling tickets, or child wrangling. Teens and adults cast will also be asked for limited help in technical and promotional capacities. 1

2 The Music Man Cast Breakdown Charlie Cowell A traveling salesmen who is on to Harold Hill's schemes. Tirelessy attempts to prove to everyone the true con man behind Harold Hill. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 45 Harold Hill Our story's unsuspecting protagonist. A con man, traveling under the auspices of a salesman, he eventually falls in love with Marian Paroo. Charismatic and charming. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 35. Vocal range top: F4; Vocal range bottom: Ab2 Mayor Shinn A blustery politician who is all too "self-important." Begrudgingly married to Eulalie, he is skeptical of the town rumor mill. Gender: Male, Age: 50 to 60 Ewart Dunlop A member of the quartet formed by Harold Hill with a tenor voice. Ewart is married to Maude Dunlop. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 45. Vocal range top: F5. Vocal range bottom: F3 Oliver Hix A baritone in the quartet formed by Hill. Oliver is married to Alma Hix. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 45. Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: B2 Jacey Squires The highest tenor in the quartet. Married to Mrs. Squires. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 45. Vocal range top: C5, Vocal range bottom: C3 Olin Britt A citizen of River City and the bass of the quartet formed by Harold Hill. Gender: Male, Age: 25 to 45. Vocal range top: C4, Vocal range bottom: F2 Marcellus Washburn Harold's chummy old friend and former con man, he now lives in River City and is trying to settle down. Gender: Male, Age: 30 to 40. Vocal range top: A4, Vocal range bottom: G2 Tommy Djilas An attractive, young man from the wrong side of town. He is secretly courting Zaneeta. Gender: Male, Age: 15 to 20 Marian Paroo The stuffy town librarian and music teacher. She is an attractive young lady who eventually falls for Harold Hill. Stuck up. Curious. Gender: Female, Age: 20 to 30. Vocal range top: A5, Vocal range bottom: G3 Mrs. Paroo Cheerful and always plotting. An Irish widow and mother to Marian and Winthrop. Gender: Female, Age: 45 to 60. 3 Amaryllis A slightly bratty piano student of Marion Paroo. Gender: Female, Age: 8 to 12. Vocal range top: E5, Vocal range bottom: C4 Winthrop Paroo Marian's baby brother, he is very shy because of a noticeable lisp. Embraces Harold Hill and the marching band. Gender: Male, Age: 8 to 12. Vocal range top: Eb5, Vocal range bottom: C4 Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn Mayor Shinn's peacock wife. A serial gossiper and snob, she has trouble keeping her opinions to herself. Gender: Female, Age: 40 to 50. Vocal range top: D5, Vocal range bottom: D4 Zaneeta Shinn The Mayor's fresh-faced daughter who is in love with Tommy. Sweet and outgoing. Appears to be daffy at times. Gender: Female, Age: 14 to 18 Alma Hix A "Pick-a-Little Lady" married to Oliver Hix. Gender: Female, Age: 25 to 45 Maud Dunlop A "Pick-a-Little Lady" married to Ewart Dunlop. Gender: Female, Age: 25 to 45 Ethel Toffelmier A comical "Pick-a-Little Lady," and Marcellus Washburn's girlfriend. Gender: Female, Age: 25 to 40 Mrs. Squires A "Pick-a-Little Lady" married to Jacey Squires.
