On the morning o Decemer 9th, a grou o aout 50 Lakota Sioux ere camed on the anks o the Wounded Knee creek in southestern South Dakota. Surrounding the cam as a large contingent o U.S. soldiers charged ith the resonsiilit o arresting the chie and disarming his arriors. Emotions ere ra, all resent ere on edge, and the atmoshere as rittle ith tension. revie Onl The receding months had een devastating or the roud memers o the Lakota Sioux trie. With their ualo herds raidl disaearing and ith encroachment on all sides settlers and government orces, the eole kne that the a o lie the had knon orever as raidl nearing its end. In a deserate attemt to return to the das o their glor, man Native Americans sought salvation in a ne msticism reached a aiute shaman in Nevada. Several Lakota Sioux emissaries had traveled rom South Dakota to hear his message. Wovoka rohesied that the dead ould soon reoin the living in a ne orld in hich all ould live ithout ear. To hasten this event, he encouraged all ho ould listen to erorm the Ghost Dance. Man dancers ore hite or rightl colored shirts emlazoned ith images o eagles and ualoes. As the danced ildl, the elieved that these ghost shirts ould rotect them rom soldiers ullets. During the all o 890, the Ghost Dance henomenon sread quickl through the Sioux villages o the Dakota reservations, revitalizing the citizenr and ringing an increased level o ear to the area settlers and to the U.S. arm. lease note: Our and and orchestra music is no eing collated an automatic high-seed sstem. 2 In Decemer o 890, the orders ere issued to egin rounding u the area s trial leaders. One such communication read the Sioux are dancing in the sno and are ild We need rotection and e need it no. The leaders should e arrested and conined at some militar ost until the matter is quieted, and this should e done no. Ater the death o Chie Sitting Bull on Decemer 5th, a grou o aout 50 Lakotas led south, seeking rotection on the ine Ridge Reservation. The arm interceted the grou on Decemer 8th and rought them to the edge o the Wounded Knee creek to cam. In the earl morning hours o Decemer 9th, all the Lakota men ere summoned to the center o the cam. The soldiers ordered the men to surrender their eaons, agitating an alread tense and serious situation. The Lakotas egan to stack their guns, ut the soldiers ere still not satisied. The troos egan ransacking the cam s tents, ringing out undles and tearing them oen, tossing small knives, axes, and tent stakes onto the ile. The soldiers then ordered individual searches o the arriors. Although the exact details o the next e moments are sketch, most accounts sa that one o the Sioux, ossil a medicine man named Yello Bird, soke out in deiance o the soldiers. Throing dirt in the air, he danced a e stes o the Ghost Dance and urged his riends not to orr, that the soldier s ullets could not harm them. As the tension uilt to an unearale level, the unthinkale haened: in the noise and conusion, a Lakota gun accidentall discharged. Within seconds the troos ired volle ater volle into the no unarmed cam. Clouds o smoke and dust illed the air as men, omen, and children scramled or their lives. Man ran or a ravine next to the cam onl to e cut don in a ithering cross ire. When the smoke cleared and the terrile chaos dre to a close, nearl 00 Lakota Sioux la dead. erhas no summation o the catastrohic event is more roound or eloquent than the olloing ords, oered the amous Lakota medicine man Black Elk, ho survived the massacre: I did not kno then ho much as ended. The irst aleatoric section egins at measure, and is actuall ased on a melodic ragment taken rom the Sioux ghost dance song Wana manie. Students and conductor are encouraged to careull read the instructions hich have een included at that oint in the score. Measures through 5 should e extremel ominous, menacing, and illed ith tension. Measures 56 through 66 should e ver accented, ver driving, and ver dramatic. At measure 67, the snare drum art should e ver sot, and must remain eneath the oodind activit aove. Also at measure 67, the to susended cmals should e as dierent in size and eight as ossile. Measure 0 is a ver climactic oint in the iece, and should e laed ith great oer and intensit. revie Onl There are to ver imortant things that must e said to the ercussion section at measure 09. irst, the timani art: the idea at this oint is to la the timani ver lightl and as ar to the edge as hsicall ossile. The resulting sound ill e ver thin and hollo. This is the desired eect. Second, the oodlock art: the laer should use a small oodlock, and should la ith to small, light ooden sticks (the laer might, erhas, use the handles o a light air o mallets). The desired sound here should e more o a light clicking sound than a ull-lon authentic oodlock timre. At measures 7 and 8, the crescendi should rise dramaticall to eat our o measure 8, and should e released arutl, exactl on eat our. A similar eect should e sought in measures 5 and 6. The snare drum should enter ver sotl at measure 7. A second aleatoric section egins at measure 6. It, too, is ased on the same ghost dance ragment used at measure. laers at this oint should ollo the same general rocedures as those olloed eore, and should reer to the seciic directions rinted in the score.
