1 Joseph R. elho T he field of c u l t u r a l entomology examines the influence of insects on human societies. Previously, references to insects in popular music were compiled and analyzed to determine how insects are used and perceived (elho 2000). Artist names, album titles, song titles, and lyrics provide an interesting contrast to the visual media of motion pictures (Mertins 1986, Berenbaum 1996), animated movies (skosky and Berenbaum 1988), and cartoons (DeJong 1994) examined by previous investigators. Kellert (1993) describes nine attitudes toward invertebrates: aesthetic, dominionistic, ecologistic, humanistic, symbolic, naturalistic, negativistic (shock), scientific, and utilitarian. In general, insects are used in two contrasting ways: for their 142 aesthetic value (e.g., butterflies) and for their negativistic value (e.g., maggots). In this study, I have assembled cases in which insect images are used on the cover art of published rock and roll music. This approach provides an interesting example in which musical and visual media occur together. Using the World Wide Web and other means to find examples of insects used in cover art, I examined the degree to which various taxonomic groups were represented; and I attempted to elucidate how their level of representation reflected human attitudes toward them. I explored recurring themes and examined temporal changes in insect cover art production. I predicted that insects would be represented in cover art in ways similar to that shown previously for artists, albums, AMERICAN ENTOMOLOGIST Fall 2004

2 and songs, but that the nature of the medium would bias the results toward taxa and themes with more visual impact. New Database I used the database generated my previous study (elho 2000; Appendix I) as a starting point. All artists and album titles with entomological names were searched on the commercial web sites CDnow, Yahoo!, and the Ultimate Band List. Sometimes, I found covers not shown on those sites on an artist s official web site, a fan site, or on an on-line cover art archive ( php). If I couldn t observe the cover on any of these sites, I made no further direct efforts to locate it. vers containing entomological material were recorded in a new database for the present study. I searched a number of on-line cover art archives for additional insect-related covers. All thumbnails were examined on the Record ver Art archive ( and the Show and Tell Music galleries ( showandtellmusic.com/pages/galleries_main.html). I read all artist names and album titles for insect clues on the Metal vers archive ( then examined the covers of those that were entomological. All key words were searched on Amazon.com, IUMA.com, and the Megasearch CD covers search engine ( php3). In addition to key words I used previously (elho 2000; Table 1), I made the following additions: antz, borboletta, firefly, and mariposa. Key words relating to insect products (e.g., honey, silk) and noninsect arthropods were not used. However, I included one cover because it clearly showed an insect product as a dominant feature (The Ohio Players Honey). Others were included because an insect theme was clearly and intentionally conveyed (e.g., a honeycombed view in Sugarglider s Bee Sting Smile) even though no insects were shown. I discovered many covers by browsing music stores, and several were provided by friends and contributors. For the most part, I followed limits established for the previous study (elho 2000). Albums issued before 1955 were excluded. Musical forms that arose from or were influenced strongly by rock and roll were included, whereas those that predated or were progenitors of rock and roll were excluded. Otherwise, the process was as inclusive as possible, retaining CD singles, EPs, imports, alternative versions, motion picture soundtracks, and compilations. The searches were conducted until January ver art containing insect themes was downloaded or scanned and stored. To obtain images of greater size and resolution, I examined fan sites, and I searched for artist and title on the image search engine at Google.com. Information was collected and assembled into an electronic database. The artist and title of the album and the year of issue, if available, were recorded. I then built a frequency distribution of year data using 5-year intervals from 1965 to All statistics were performed using Microsoft Excel v Putting Things in Order Each album was classified according to taxonomic order. A general category for nonspecific insect themes or unidentifiable species also was included. Redundancy was eliminated. If an album had insects on the back cover, inside, and/or on the CD proper, it was only counted once. However, if more than one order of insects were shown, all orders were counted. Specific attributes of the insects shown were noted, including whether they appeared to be disproportionately large (giant), in great numbers (numerous), or shared insect and human features (chimeric). As most cartoon-style insects have human- or at least vertebratelike eyes, they were not scored as chimeric unless other human anatomical features were shown. Increased Popularity or Obsession? Although this fraction was difficult to estimate with certainty, using the total number of insectrelated albums in this study (392) and that once listed by CDnow (~500,000 albums), insect themes command less than 0.1% of rock music covers. Hence, insect cover art is relatively rare. The database is listed in Appendix I and, for convenience, on the the author s web site ( ~coelhjo), where images of the artwork can be viewed. The rate of release of rock albums with insect cover art appears to be increasing steeply (Fig. 1). The number of such albums produced during each 5-year interval since 1965 remained flat for 20 years, then accelerated at a rapid rate during each subsequent 5-year interval. An exponential curve best described the effect, where number of covers = 10-57e0.0677yr (R 2 = 0.599). The last interval ( ) was not included in the regression calculation because it is not complete. Fig. 1. The growth in insect cover art over time at 5-year intervals. Each labeled interval represents the number of covers issued during the previous five years (e.g., 1970 spans ). 3 This apparent outbreak may be genuine, mirroring a similar increase in insect (especially cockroach) films (Berenbaum 1996); however, other factors may explain the seemingly explosive trend. First, the total number of albums released has doubtlessly increased as growth has occurred in the music industry generally, and the rock genre specifically. Second, the resources used, both online and physical, to find the covers are likely to be skewed toward more recent releases, which sell better and are not yet out of print. Though the study was limited to post-1955 material, the oldest album listed dates from only Many artists in the database appeared to have at least a minor obsession with insects. Of 252 artists, 68 (27%) had insect-related names; 151 albums (38%) also had entomological names. Furthermore, 34 albums had entomological names and artists with insect names. These trends are understandable considering the method by which many covers were discovered-searching by name and title. In spite of this sampling bias, 169 albums (43%) had neither titles nor band names that were entomological. Several artists seemed to exhibit a strong sense of biophilia (Kellert 1997), as they carried an insect theme throughout much of their work, often associated with an insect band name. Praying Mantis used either a self-titled creature or logo on eight albums. Freddy and the Fleas featured an image of a flea playing the guitar on six albums. Papa Roach also had six appearances of cockroach images. For similar reasons, Iron Butterfly and The Junebugs appeared four times each in the database. However, even some artists without an obvious entomological nature repeated insect themes. Barclay James Harvest used butterflies on nearly all their album covers. The combination of a long career and numerous alternative album versions gives them the highest number of appearances in the database at 32. Journey used essentially the same scarab beetle on 11 albums, and Talk Talk released 10 albums with surreal moth images by painter James Marsh (Marsh, 2004). Fig. 2. The distribution of insect-related cover art among orders of insects. Most of the artists that issued insect themes on covers are not widely known; however, popular artists past and present also made contributions. In addition to those already mentioned, AC/DC (Fly on the Wall), Aerosmith (Pandora s Box), Alice In Chains (Jar of Flies), Barbra Streisand (Butterfly), llective Soul (Dosage), Eve 6 (Eve 6), Heart (Dog & Butterfly), d Zeppelin (d Zeppelin III), Mariah Carey (Butterfly), Santana (Borboletta), and Steely Dan (Katy Lied) have all featured entomological cover art. The Most Favored Orders Sixteen taxonomic orders of insects graced album covers or liner notes (Fig. 2). Of these, the order appearing most frequently was pidoptera (36%), followed by menoptera (17%), leoptera (11%), ptera (9%), and Odonata (8%). The general category garnered 7%. In lesser numbers were Orthoptera, Mantodea, Blattodea with 3% each, and Siphonaptera with 2%. Homoptera represented about 1% of the total; and Anoplura, Dermaptera, Ephemeroptera, Hemiptera, Isoptera, and Plecoptera were represented by only one album each (0.2% of the total). menoptera, pidoptera, and ptera dominate in motion pictures (Mertins 1986), cartoons (DeJong 1994), and animated films (skosky and Berenbaum 1988), as well as rock music in general (elho 2000). The most striking difference between album covers and artist, album, and song names is the clear preference for pidoptera in artwork. The aesthetic appeal of pidoptera resulted in many albums featuring attractive butterflies and moths on their covers; for example, the Bee Gees collections Rare Precious & Beautiful (3 Volumes), Butterfly Scream s self-titled album, and Helium s No Guitars. The visual appeal of Odonata and leoptera makes them favored subjects. lorful beetles were demonstrated by The Jesus Lizard s Shot, Bug Candy s Man Eating Bugs, and The Odds Bedbugs, among others. Dragonflies provided for some striking covers, such as Deyss The Dragonfly from the Sun, Dragonfly s self-titled release, and Galadriel s Chasing the Dragonfly. ptera, although a common feature of names designed to elicit shock, were not apparently considered as valuable in the form of cover art subjects; pteran album covers were fourth in prevalence. When ptera were used, negativistic attitudes were promoted primarily through masses of maggots, as in Wendy O. Williams/Plasmatics greatest hits compilation Maggots: the Record, Esham s Maggot Brain Theory, and Cannibal rpse s Vile. menopteran popularity holds second place in cover art, perhaps because its members reflect several types of attitudes toward insects. Aesthetic treatments of menoptera were shown in Subsurfing s Frozen Ants (large, attractive ant), utilitarian aspects by The Ohio Players Honey (woman eating honey), and negativistic ones by Mark Stanley s Insect Warriors. Metaphoric values of menoptera, such as toughness, aggression, and power, were demonstrated by totemic 144 AMERICAN ENTOMOLOGIST Fall 2004

4 representations of a large wasp on Various Artists Charlotte Hornets: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, Various Artists Green Hornet, and Wu-Tang Killa Bees The Sting. Gross Exaggeration The visual impact of covers should improve the shock value of oversized arthropods in rock music, providing a visual means of displaying negativistic attitudes. Indeed, 43 albums (11%) with entomological covers demonstrated a degree of gigantism in the featured insects. The Generiks Revenge of the Dung Beetle provides an excellent example, featuring an enormous, menacing beetle rolling its dung ball through a city, as the citizens run away screaming and military personnel fire rifles at the insect. Others include Agent Steel s Mad Locust Rising, Grasshopper Child s self-titled release, Herbaliser s Wall Crawling Giant Insect Breaks, Uriah Heep s Firefly, Xtra Large s Now I Eat Them, and many of the albums by Praying Mantis. Numerous horror movies have showcased gigantic insects (Mertins 1986), and some albums have been inspired by these (Giant Ant Farm s Them!) or feature the soundtracks to such classic films (e.g., Various Artists Monstrous Movie Music), but they are rare in artist, album, and song names (elho 2000). Hence, it would seem that visual media maximize the impact of unnaturally large insects. The fear factor of great numbers of insects is well known from film (Mertins 1986), as well as rock music artist, album, and song names (elho 2000). Only 38 (10%) insect covers were considered to be swarming with insects, i.e., at least five displayed. Perhaps the small size of the medium (especially today s CD versus earlier vinyl LPs) limits the number and size of insects that can be effectively presented. The most common cover of this type featured bees, perhaps to generate fear (e.g., Anthrax s Attack Of The Killer B s, llective Soul s Dosage, Skandalous All-Stars The Age of Insects, The Soft Boys A Can of Bees, and, not surprisingly, the compilations by Various Artists Storm Of Drones and Swarm Of Drones. The aforementioned maggot-covered albums naturally inspire revulsion. On the other hand, not all such infestations reflected negativistic attitudes. There were a number of much less threatening assemblages of butterflies, including Barclay James Harvest s self-titled album and Early Morning Onwards, Deee-Lite s Sampladelic Relics & Dancefloor Oddities, Moose s Uptown Invisible, Soilwork s Natural Born Chaos, and Talk Talk s The lour of Spring. It is possible that increasing diversity of insects could make them more frightening as well. Indeed, four albums showed five recognizable orders of insects including The Rolling Stones Metamorphosis. Alice oper s Welcome to My Nightmare should, perhaps, count as six because the back of some versions displays a black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans F.). Sweaty Nipples Bug Harvest and Mofungo s Bugged probably have more than five each, but small images make identification difficult. Another four albums showed three orders, and eight showed two orders. A Little Bit of Humor and Creativity Forty-four (11%) of the cover art images were chimeric. Most chimeric characters were simply humans with insect wings, reflecting a fantasy of human-powered flight (e.g., Iron Butterfly s Scorching Beauty, Gemstone s Butterfly, Linkin Park s brid Theory, Moth Macabre s Moth Macabre, and Neon Philharmonic s Moth nfesses). These examples might reflect utilitarian or aesthetic attitudes. Others were considerably less romantic, including humans with insect heads, such as Richard Thompson s Henry the Human Fly and Mother Head Bug s Zambodia, and more overtly grotesque characters (e.g., Abscess s Seminal Vampires and Maggot Men and Ded Bugs The Night We Got Sick and ed!). Chimeric artwork is known from jade carvings from the middle Neolithic period (~5000 BCE) in China, though these artifacts combined the characteristics of different animals and insects (Doonan 2001, NPM 2004). Hence, modern rock music is carrying on a long-standing artistic tradition. Images illustrated through a variety of media allow a great deal of stylistic variation and creativity in cover art. A common enhancement to lepidopteran cover art was to draw alternative colors, patterns, or images upon the wings. Two of the covers were electron micrographs of insects: Tad s Infrared Riding Hood (flea), and Albino Fly s Untitled (compound eye). Four others were photographs of insect tattoos (Blink 182 s Enema of the State, Crazy Town s The Gift of Game, Freddy and the Fleas Temporary Blond, and Spike 1000 s Waste of Skin), which are apparently popular (Pearson 1996). Of interest to musicians are several titles in which insect figures are associated with instruments, such as Freddy & the Fleas Fleak Out!!! (flea plays electric guitar), B. Bumble & the Stingers self-titled album (bee flies by piano), Montrose s The Very Best of Montrose (wasp plays guitar), Richard Thompson s Henry the Human Fly (human fly plays guitar), and Tiger Moth s Mothballs (moth plays accordion). Talk Talk s I Don t Believe in You features a lepidopteran with musical notes in its wing coloration pattern. Critters Buggin s Host features an insectile creature with a portable stereo (boom box) for a head that takes advantage of the hexapodal anatomy of insects; it is standing on two legs, holding a futuristic guitar in one hand, a horn in another, a pair of drumsticks in another, and a book (of sheet music?) in the last, suggesting a one-man band. Similarly, Gary Hoey s Ho, Ho, Hoey II shows an ant playing drums, guitar, and keyboard while adjusting an amplifier. Maggotron s Early Maggots/Best of Maggotron demonstrates insects enjoying music, as ants wearing headphones and space helmets appear to be dancing on an ant mound. The visual impact of covers should improve the shock value of oversized arthropods in rock music, providing a visual means of displaying negativistic attitudes. 5 Rock music has used insects as subjects for cover art at a rapidly increasing rate, but confounding effects of music industry growth and sampling bias probably diminish the significance of this trend. A Hint of Entomology In numerous cases, insects were rendered in detail adequate for sight identification. Primarily, these were readily identifiable, common species. Examples include the honey bee, Apis mellifera L. (Celi Bee & the Buzzy Bunch s Superman), the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus (L.) (Mariah Carey s Butterfly, Saves the Day s I m Sorry I m aving, and Butterfly Jones Napalm Springs), the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.) (Papa Roach s Infest), the crab louse, Phthirus pubis (L.) (Bunny Genghis Children Under Twelve), the mourningcloak butterfly, Nymphalis antiopa (L.) (The House of Love s self-titled album), the polyphemus moth, Antheraea polyphemus (Cramer) (Gathering Of Souls Neither Moss Nor Rust rrupts), and the tiger swallowtail, Papilio glaucus L. (Barclay James Harvest s The Best of Barclay James Harvest, Better Than Ezra s Closer, and Moonspell s Butterfly Effect). Barclay James Harvest s The llection shows 10 butterflies, of which the red admiral (Vanessa atalanta L.), the painted lady [V. cardui (L.)], and a swallowtail (Papilio machaon L.) were readily identifiable. Many others were readily classified to family or genus and could doubtless be identified to species by those with taxonomic expertise in the appropriate areas. Indeed, Rebecca Bullard, a maggot specialist, was kind enough to point out that Esham s Maggot Brain Theory is not, in fact, covered with maggots. The numerous larvae appear to have distinct head capsules and resemble the caterpillars of the greater wax moth [Galleria mellonella (L.)], which are widely available as fish bait. Similarly, few would recognize the three-legged, headless cicada killer [Sphecius speciosus (Drury)], shown ventral-side-up on the Gourds Ghosts of Hallelujah, if they had not worked intimately with the wasp. Interestingly, some images were similar to those in popular field guides. The polyphemus moth of Gathering Of Souls Neither Moss Nor Rust rrupts is identical to that on the color plate on page 250 of Arnett and Jacques (1981); and the monarch of Saves the Day s I m Sorry I m aving appears to be the same as that on page 239 of the same volume, without the background. The bumble bee shown on the Bumblebees Cross-Pollination, the Bees of the Invisible bears a suspicious resemblance to that featured prominently on the cover of Borror and White (1970), altered only by the addition of stripes to the abdomen. Although artist, album, and song names sometimes had themes reflecting the scientific attitudes of professional entomologists (elho 2000), cover art had little of such relevance. The Bluetones Slight Return shows a bumblebee with an insect pin through its thorax. Papa Roach s Infest also features a pinned cockroach (though it is mounted upside-down from the traditional method) on the cover, and the inside front cover has numerous cockroach images and a phylogenetic tree of cockroach families and genera. The back cover has a cockroach photo with what appears to be labeled external anatomy, but the labels are actually song titles. My Dad Is Dead s Everyone Wants the Honey But Not the Sting shows an insect collection professionally pinned and labeled. Two Loons for Tea s Looking for Landmarks features an illustration of the honey bee waggle dance. Other unique behaviors include cannibalism in praying mantids (The Trouble With Girls Killer) and butterfly mating (Deep Forest s mparsa). Dominionistic attitudes were even rarer; Isis Mosquito ntrol does not demonstrate what the title suggests, but does have several mosquitoes and anatomical drawings of an insect head. Insect control methods are demonstrated only by the electric bug zapper on Stan Ridgway s Mosquitos. All in All, a Rare Trend Rock music has used insects as subjects for cover art at a rapidly increasing rate, but confounding effects of music industry growth and sampling bias probably diminish the significance of this trend. Overall, albums with insect cover art remain rare. Insects were used primarily for their visual appeal on cover art. nsequently, pidoptera probably are well represented because of the beauty of butterflies and moths. leoptera and Odonata are also common, probably for similar reasons. menoptera are the second most frequently represented order, perhaps because they represent a variety of attitudes, such as aesthetic, utilitarian, negativistic, and metaphoric. ptera are less common than expected in cover art because of the negative associations of flies, maggots, and mosquitoes. Gigantic and, to a lesser extent, great numbers of insects were also used for shock value. Chimeric insect-humans were not uncommon. Most insects were not rendered in a realistic form, but several were identifiable to species. Few examples demonstrated scientific topics (e.g., pinning), and a few demonstrated insect musicianship. Overall, insects were used in very creative ways, presumably to enhance the varied effects desired by the artists. Acknowledgments My gratitude is extended to those who provided, via and otherwise, insect cover art of which I was unaware, and especially to Savannah elho for canvassing record stores. Rebecca Bullard graciously provided input on identification of ambiguous maggots.
