2 Air Check Dear Member, Happy New Year! January is always an exciting month for all of us as we welcome a variety of new programs and returning series. And this month, we celebrate an impressive milestone in Chicago broadcasting history: the 40th anniversary of our Friday evening series The Week in Review, which has been hosted by Joel Weisman since its inception in January Each week, Joel convenes a panel of journalists to break down the top stories of the week in Chicago, a format that is commonplace now but did not exist then. Join us for a one-hour special on January 19 that looks back at the series and bids farewell to Joel as he steps down from the anchor chair after his unprecedented run. Don t forget that you can watch all episodes on demand at wttw.com/chicagotonight. On WTTW11 this month, beat the winter blues with the second season of the popular Masterpiece series Victoria, and new seasons of The Interview Show with Mark Bazer, Antiques Roadshow, and 800 Words; also, Check, Please! brings you a menu of new restaurants and reviewers who love them. Ann Curry tugs at the heartstrings with her new series We ll Meet Again, which reunites people who met under traumatic circumstances; Queen Elizabeth s Secret Agents explores espionage in Tudor England; and Italy s Invisible Cities takes you to Naples, Venice, and Florence to uncover the hidden history under their stunning facades. Also, follow a local man as he strives to bring an unknown work to light in Lost Opera: The Way to Andina; and finally, find out what happens when Nature supplies Animals with Cameras. Your WTTW Passport subscription entitles you to watch all of this, and so much more, any time you want! On wttw.com, as you watch the young Queen Victoria navigate the difficulties of ruling and being a mother, enjoy our weekly recaps. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on his birthday, 50 years after his assassination, revisit John Callaway s monumental 1978 conversation with the civil rights icon s late widow, Coretta Scott King. And read a close-up interview with Joel Weisman as he reflects on 40 years of The Week in Review. WFMT will celebrate the worldwide artistic leadership of Chicago Symphony Orchestra music director Riccardo Muti in January. He s the guest conductor for the 2018 New Year s in Vienna concert, which we ll present on the morning of New Year s Day, just a few hours after the all-strauss Family performance takes place in the Musikverein. We re continuing the live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera, including a holiday special, Hansel and Gretel sung in English, and the company s new production of Tosca. And we continue our longtime partnership with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, starting their new radio season on Thursday evenings, featuring conductors Edo de Waart and JoAnn Falletta and pianist Emanuel Ax. On wfmt.com, host Candice Agree remembers luminaries in the classical world who died in 2017, including baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, soprano Roberta Peters, and conductor George Prêtre. Also, stream our most memorable in-studio performances of 2017 featuring artists from around the world. Warm wishes for a Happy New Year, and thanks for your support. 4 MEMBER PERKS $10 Off Tickets to Hatfield & McCoy It s the true tale of the most infamous family feud in American history. On the border of Kentucky and West Virginia, North and South, Fact and Fiction, two cabins both alike in dignity wage a whip-smart war of words and bullets. This play, the House Theatre of Chicago s modern love letter to Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, lands us in a philosophically polarized America emerging from the Civil War. But conflict reverberates at home. Gunfire and romance erupt when young Rose Anna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield fall in love, marry in secret, and vow to reconcile their feuding families. Their tale of woe is served up with a heaping helping of original Americana tunes, connecting their past to our present. The Women s Social and Political Union (WSPU), led by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughter Christabel, was the primary militant group pushing for women s suffrage in the United Kingdom in the early 20th century. Under the slogan Deeds, not words, the WSPU advocated targeting property as a form of protest, from smashing shop windows to burning and bombing buildings. Imprisoned WSPU members including Emmeline Pankhurst launched hunger strikes, which were initially countered by the authorities with force-feeding; later the government introduced the Cat and Mouse Act, under which dying suffragettes were released, only to be re-imprisoned once regaining their health. To defend their members, the WSPU created The Bodyguard, an all-female security team, trained in jujutsu. The Good Fight tells their story. 16 Joel Weisman on the set of The Week in Review The Week in Review Celebrates 40 Years with Joel Weisman The year was 1978: The first test tube baby was born, a postage stamp cost 15 cents, and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack topped the Billboard charts. Closer to home, Chicagoans were suffering through a brutal winter, buffeted by subzero temperatures and a massive snowstorm that paralyzed the city and may have derailed any hope of re-election for then-mayor Michael Bilandic. Something else occurred in 1978: the premiere of Chicago Tonight: The Week in Review, hosted by Joel Weisman, who was also one of the program s creators. This month, on the show s 40th anniversary, Joel steps down from his role of moderator after an unprecedented run. Chicago Tonight Executive Producer Mary Field reflects, It s rare for someone to maintain a consistent level of excellence over 40 years, but Joel has, she says. His ability to keep a lively and inclusive conversation moving while eliciting insights from his guests is really unparalleled. We will all miss his warmth, collaborative nature, and keen news acumen. Chicago Tonight: The Week in Review is the longest-running series in the history of WTTW (which, after all, is only 62), and one of Chicago television s longest-running series with a single host or anchor. On Friday, January 19, WTTW will celebrate that milestone with a one-hour retrospective featuring a variety of special guests (all of whom have been part of Joel s panels numerous times) and highlights from throughout the history of the series. Joel fondly recalls many memorable incidents over the years: the sportswriter who was so nervous to venture outside of his beat that he had an anxiety attack and had to be rushed to the hospital in the middle of the show s taping; having to break up a fight between two reporters in the parking lot; and an Evanston reporter whose only response was a blank stare when Joel asked I liked asking guests what they truly thought about a topic, personalizing the issue and getting at their opinions. a question outside the parameters of the story he had recently reported. Joel, who describes himself as a reporter, editor, traffic cop, and referee, has welcomed hundreds of reporters over the years to his rotating four-person weekly panel, long before such a format was commonplace. From the start, at Joel s insistence, the panels have been nonpartisan and diverse, and have represented print, broadcast, and later, digital media. Over all those years of interacting with journalists as well as in his work as an attorney specializing in media law Joel has learned that media people are among the smartest people you ll ever meet. They re facile and can turn on a dime; they re fun-loving and have real opinions. One accomplishment of The Week in Review is that it exposed those admirable traits to the public by showing journalists in a setting where their personalities could come through. I liked asking guests what they truly thought about a topic, personalizing the issue and getting at their opinions, Joel says. That approach has been emblematic of Joel and The Week in Review, as is its indepth exploration of the news. At the time of the premiere, TV reporting was still seen as less serious than print, recalls Joel, who was himself originally a newspaper reporter. But the program s format dispelled that stereotype. That s not to say it was easy at first. There were no teleprompters, so we just used cue cards that were difficult to read, remembers Joel. I wasn t used to talking on camera, so it often took me multiple tries to get something right. Early on, there was a betting pool in the control room: how many times will it take Joel to get it right? I think the worst was eleven, he says, laughing. I will be forever grateful for the trust WTTW and its viewers have placed in me each week, says Joel. I m gratified that so many panelists have told me that their participation gave them visibility, prestige, and a chance to show the public their deep knowledge of Chicago. I ve made many lifelong friends here, and Friday at WTTW was always the highlight of my week. It was an agonizing decision to leave, but I feel that it s time to pass the baton. That baton, for the time being, will be passed to hosts from the ranks of Chicago Tonight s correspondents, several of whom have already substituted for Joel. Those opportunities have been few and far between, as Joel has rarely been absent; back in 1995, he returned only two weeks after heart bypass surgery. After Joel departs, he will continue to practice as an attorney as well as possibly return to the roots of his journalism career and write again. But his legacy will live on at WTTW in the show he created and hosted for 40 years. And to think it all started as, in his words, a replacement for an ill-fated nightly news program. A long-running and illustrious replacement it has been. n 16 JANUARY 2018

22 In the Spotlight Concerts by the Milwaukee Symphony Edo de Waart, the internationally prominent Dutch-born maestro who served as the Milwaukee Symphony s sixth music director starting in 2008, stepped down from full-time podium work at the end of the orchestra s season, and will now serve as conductor laureate, making several appearances in Milwaukee each season. The series begins with Strauss Four Last Songs performed by Rachel Willis-Sorenson and Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Emanuel Ax. Of interest on the following week s broadcast is Coventry: A Meditation for String Orchestra by the Czech-British composer-conductor Vilem Tausky ( ). As a member of the Czech Army in Exile in Great Britain in 1940, Tausky participated in a search for survivors after Coventry Cathedral was bombed by the Nazis. He wrote his meditation on war and destruction originally for string quartet, later arranging it for a larger ensemble. De Waart conducts Stravinsky, Poulenc, and Beethoven for week three, and guest conductor JoAnn Falletta concludes the MSO s January sequence with Rimsky-Korsakov s Scheherazade and Phantasmagoria, an orchestral extract John Corigliano created from his opera The Ghosts of Versailles.
