2 Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly Oxford Philomusica) was founded in In 2002 it was appointed the Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford in an agreement which has been renewed until 2017 between the Chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University and the Orchestra. This Residency, unique amongst British orchestras, offers training, tuition and performing opportunities to students, as well as a prestigious season of concerts for students and academics alike. Members of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra are amongst some of the finest musicians in the country, and many are also experienced teachers in major conservatoires. The OPO s reputation as one of the leading orchestras in the UK also attracts some of the world s greatest artists to appear in its concert series. With such outstanding musicians at our disposal, we offer unique and unparalleled opportunities for students to receive tuition in performance-related studies, both from within our own membership and by visiting international celebrities. The Oxford Philharmonic s programmes of classes and workshops are held in high esteem by musical institutions and universities around the world for offering students opportunities to be taught and inspired by some of the world s greatest artists, once again reaffirming the unique nature of our relationship with the University of Oxford. 3 Performing Opportunities Orchestral Apprenticeship (strings only) Professional orchestral experience and training is available to string instrumentalists who are enrolled full-time at the Faculty of Music. Candidates selected by audition will be invited to play in up to four concerts with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and will receive coaching and an award of 100 per concert. Young Artists Platform This award provides the opportunity for an outstanding soloist or a chamber ensemble to perform in the Sheldonian Theatre prior to an OPO evening concert. The scheme is available to full-time students of the University of Oxford, and is open to all instrumentalists and singers. Audition Information If you fit the criteria you may apply for both schemes Application deadline: 6 November 2015 Applicants will be invited to perform two contrasting pieces or movements lasting no longer than fifteen minutes. Please provide your own accompanist if needed. For the Orchestral Apprenticeship audition there will be sight-reading from standard orchestral repertoire, which will be available to look at thirty minutes prior to the audition Auditions will be held on 21 November 2015 at the Denis Arnold Hall of the Faculty of Music Tuition Opportunities The OPO offers music students the opportunity to receive tuition from the Soloists: the elite group of Principal players of the Orchestra. For performance oriented students studying at Oxford (especially those who want to study at a music college) it offers a rare chance to experience working with a high-level professional orchestra. 4 Oxfordshire Concerto Competition The fifth Oxfordshire Concerto Competition will once again allow musicians from across the county to compete for the opportunity to perform a concerto with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra in the final round, as well as the winning prize of a solo recital just prior to an OPO evening concert, a concerto performance in next year s Junior Competition final with the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra under Marios Papadopoulos, and a cash award of 1,000. The three competition rounds will take place in front of a distinguished judging panel chaired by Niel Immelman, Piano Professor at the Royal College of Music. New Upper Age Limit This year we are calling all instrumentalists aged 23 or under on 31 August 2016 to take part. 5 Masterclasses Free admission for all masterclasses Contact to reserve Cello Masterclass with Leonard Elschenbroich Thursday 19 November 2015 MBI auditorium at Corpus Christi College, 2-4pm Leonard Elschenbroich has excited interest worldwide as one of the most charismatic cellists of his generation. He is Artist in Residence at the Philharmonic Society Bremen ( ) and 2015 Bremen Festival. From 2012 to 2014 he was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. As a soloist, he has worked with eminent conductors and orchestras all over the world, and he regularly performs with violinist Nicola Benedetti and pianist Alexei Grynyuk. Following his concert with the Oxford Philharmonic playing Schumann s Cello Concerto, Elschenbroich will be giving a class for Oxford students. Open Rehearsal/Workshop with Anne-Sophie Mutter Tuesday 24 November 2015 Keble College Chapel, 4-6pm Anne-Sophie Mutter embarked on her international career as a soloist in 1976 at the Lucerne Festival, and a year later at the Salzburg Festival under Herbert von Karajan. Ever since then she has been one of the greatest violin virtuosos of our time and is performing concerts worldwide in all the major music centres. In this workshop, Anne-Sophie Mutter will work on Bach s Double Violin Concerto with a small student ensemble playing each movement with a different soloist participating in the class. This is a unique opportunity for selected players to play side by side with one of the world s greatest violinists. 5 5

6 Violin Masterclass with Vadim Repin Sunday 24 January 2016 Denis Arnold Hall, Music Faculty, 10.30am-1pm Described by violinist Yehudi Menuhin as simply the best and most perfect violinist that I have ever had the chance to hear, Vadim Repin won the gold medal at eleven in the Wienawski Competition and has since performed with all the world s greatest orchestras and conductors. Following his concert with the Oxford Philharmonic on 23 January in the Sheldonian Theatre playing Shostakovich s 1st Violin Concerto, Vadim Repin will give a masterclass for Oxford students where his extraordinary virtuosic skills and close rapport with the Russian repertoire will no doubt dazzle and inspire young violinists. Piano Masterclass with Marios Papadopoulos Wednesday 3 February 2016 Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, St Hilda s College, 10.30am-12pm Marios Papadopoulos is the founder, music director and driving force behind the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra. Described by The Times at his 1975 piano recital as having all the attributes of one of the world s greatest players, Papadopoulos has gone on to enjoy an international career both as pianist and conductor. Awarded an MBE in the Queen s 2014 New Year s Honours List for his services to music in Oxford, Dr Papadopoulos will work with students on sound production, technique and interpretation. 6

7 Chamber Music (String) Workshop with Jonathan Thorne and Charlotte Scott Monday 15 February 2016 MBI auditorium at Corpus Christi College, 11am-1pm Both Jonathan Thorne and Charlotte Scott are valued members of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, as Solo Viola and Associate Concertmaster respectively. Charlotte trained as a violinist at the Royal Academy of Music, where Jonathan, a strong believer in music education, is now a Professor of Viola and Chamber Music. Both players enjoy an international concert schedule with the Badke Quartet, which was formed in 2002, and is now widely recognised as one of Britain s finest string quartets. Violin Masterclass with Pinchas Zukerman Friday 1 April 2016 New College Ante-chapel, 10.30am-12.30pm Prior to his evening concert on 1 April with the Oxford Philharmonic in the Sheldonian Theatre Maestro Zukerman will give a masterclass for Oxford students sharing his vast knowledge and experience with aspiring violinists. Be prepared to explore and learn from the great man his secrets for graceful phrasing and for producing a sound on the instrument that has enthralled and captivated generations of musicians. 7 7

8 Woodwind Masterclass with Anthony Robb and Joseph Sanders Wednesday 4 May 2016 Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, St Hilda s College, pm Both incredibly versatile musicians, Anthony Robb and Joseph Sanders unite to offer their expertise in solo and chamber music. They hold the positions of principal flute and sub-principal oboe in the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra respectively. Anthony has played principal flute in London s symphony and chamber orchestras and has a strong commitment to outreach work, performing regularly in schools and hospitals. Joseph teaches oboe at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and has performed extensively as guest principal oboist with the London Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with many leading composers, and is actively engaged in research on the relationship of music and the brain. Violin Masterclass with Maxim Vengerov June 2016 (date and venue tbc) Maxim Vengerov s sound and technical command of the violin are legendary. While his 1727 Kreutzer Stradivarius helps him produce the luscious sound for which he has become famous, Vengerov s complete mastery of the instrument has been attained through a lifetime of dedicated practice. As the Oxford Philharmonic s Artist in Residence, he will be with us again in June to give a class to Oxford students and violinists from the Royal Academy of Music where he is Menuhin Professor of Music, discussing ideas on tone production and sharing his thoughts on how to improve your command of the instrument. 8

9 The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic New College Residency The Soloists of the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the elite group of Principal players of the Orchestra, have been appointed the Resident Ensemble at New College, Oxford. As part of their residency they will be providing masterclasses and concerts, beginning with their launch concert on 8 October, along with tuition opportunities for students. Thursday 24 March 2016 Sheldonian Theatre, 7pm BACH St John Passion New College Choir Robert Quinney conductor The world-famous New College Choir join the Oxford Philharmonic to present the Orchestra s first collaboration with New College since the appointment of The Soloists as the Resident Ensemble at New College. 10 Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra Established in 1998, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra occupies a unique position within the UK orchestral landscape.
