1 The Palmer Catholic Academy Performing Arts Department Newsletter Spring term 2017 Issue 1 Twitter Welcome to our 1 st Performing Arts Newsletter! On 9 th November 48 students together with five teachers travelled into town to watch the fantastic production Wicked which has just celebrated its 10 th anniversary. Wicked is a musical based on the story of The Wizard of Oz. When the Wicked Witch of the West dies, the queen looks back on her thrilling journey with the late witch. This includes travelling to the Emerald City, riding broomsticks and crazy flying monkeys. During this, the songs No- one Mourns the Wicked, Because I Knew You and the infamous Defying Gravity are featured. With the bright lights focused on the stage, the cast danced and sang with so much passion and fire that it felt like it was their first ever performance. As the GCSE music and drama students watched with amazement, and with envy of the talent being displayed, it brought to mind what we have the potential of achieving and that our journey starts here. Wicked was, pardon the pun, WICKED!! All of the students spoke highly of how inspirational it was from both a musical and dramatic perspective. We look forward to the next trip and are thankful to Mr Thorndyke and Ms Enver- Yusuf for organising this trip to help inspire the next generation of musicians and actors. Erin Davis - 9, Clitherow Sanaa Jarvis - 10, More
2 Charlie & The Chocolate Factory On 30 th November, 48 students from Year 7 & 8 with five members of staff travelled up to Theatre Royal Drury Lane to see Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Roald Dahl s deliciously dark tale of young Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectioner Willy Wonka comes to life in this West End musical. When Charlie wins a golden ticket to the weird and wonderful Wonka Chocolate Factory, it s the chance of a lifetime to feast on the sweets he s always dreamed of. But beyond the gates astonishment awaits, as down the sugary corridors and amongst the incredible edible delights, the five lucky winners discover not everything is as sweet as it seems. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was a fantastic production and the actor who played Charlie was truly inspirational. What struck most of the students as amazing was the detail and time that has obviously gone into making the set. Mr Thorndyke was also very impressed with the orchestra and the orchestration. 3 Choir concert December 2016 Before Christmas we had lots of fun and did exciting events including our latest concert. We performed to our parents and my mum came along too. I was very nervous but excited to be performing in my first ever concert with the academy choir. We have been rehearsing really hard and learnt some fantastic pieces, which we are also going to be singing on our Italy tour in July. I was really proud of performing in the concert and can t wait for the next one. I d like to thank Mr Thorndyke for all the hard work he puts into organising the music at school. It is very inspirational and choir practises are such fun due to the exciting nature of his personality. Teodora Amarioarei 7, Line 3
4 Christmas Musical On Wednesday 14 th December a number of Drama and Music students were involved in The Palmer Catholic Academy s first ever Christmas Musical. The Christmas Musical, written by Ms Enver- Yusuf and Ms Frost, was a great success and starts the path of more musical theatre at The Palmer Catholic Academy. 100 was raised for the charity Shelter. 4
5 Royal Albert Hall & Chingford Concert On Tuesday 14 th December, we took 20 Year 9 and 10 students to The Royal Albert Hall to see the Music for Youth concert. This is a concert which is organised by the music charity of the same name. Its aim is to raise money and promote young musicians. This was a fantastic event and gave the students a look into what they can do as young musicians. On Saturday 17 th December, 15 students of our school choir took part in the annual Grand Christmas Concert at St Peter & St Paul s Church, Chingford. This concert has been running for nearly 35 years and brings in over 400 audience members. The Chingford Sinfornia accompanies the choirs of the parish church amassing some 120 singers. The students really enjoyed this inspiring day and we have been invited back next year. 5
