1 Friends of Cathedral Music
2 Welcome On behalf of the people of the Cathedral of St. John, and the Bishop and people of the Diocese of the Rio Grande, we welcome you to this, our 24th season of concerts and special choral worship services at the Cathedral of St. John. The Friends of Cathedral Music series has long been a vital part of the Cathedral s outreach to the greater community. It is an offering to the people of our city and beyond. The Cathedral serves Albuquerque by opening its doors and inviting others to share in these musical gifts. People from all walks of life come from far and wide to experience the splendor of our musical events. Your presence among us enriches our lives. We anticipate great moments for concert-goers with the 24th musical season at the Cathedral of St. John. We ve combined a memorable repertoire of classical music with exceptionally talented artists from across the globe. The season includes concerts, special liturgical events and, throughout the season of Lent, musical meditations each Friday evening alongside a unique opportunity to support our Cathedral s Food Pantry. We invite you to join us: to take part, to share, to be touched by the Spirit that moves through music, to be nourished by that same Spirit, and to be deepened in your relationship with each other and God through great music and talented musicians. You are welcome at the Cathedral of St. John and you honor us by your presence. The Very Rev. J. Mark Goodman Dean of the Cathedral Dr. Maxine Thévenot Canon Precentor, Director of Cathedral Music Image Credit: Cover: Decorative Element, Donald Jackson, Copyright 2006, The Saint John s Bible, Saint John s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA.

5 Saturday November 11th, 2017 at 10:10am A Concert of Remembrance Ottorino Respighi: Suite in G for Organ and Strings Maxine Thévenot, organ soloist Chatter David Felberg, conductor Luigi Cherubini: Requiem Mass in C Minor The Cathedral Choirs Chatter, concertmaster David Felberg Maxine Thévenot, conductor Respighi spent some time as principal violinist at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg and studied briefly with Rimsky-Korsakov before going back to his native Bologna to resume composition studies and teaching. This work, dating from 1905, highlights his virtuosic string writing and treats the organ in an equal fashion. Cherubini s masterpiece, premiered 200 years ago, was greatly admired by Ludwig van Beethoven, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Beethoven described the Requiem as the perfect example, should he ever write one. Schumann called it unequalled, while Brahms hailed it as a marvel. This concert, commemorating the 99th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War, will conclude with the tolling of the Cathedral bell. General Seating: $20 Full-time students with valid ID FREE

8 Saturday, January 27th, 2018 at 3:00pm International Holocaust Remembrance Day Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico Elizabeth Purvis, cello Maxine Thévenot, pianist and conductor Donald McCullough: The Holocaust Cantata Ernest Bloch: Prayer Based on research of original music sung by incarcerated inmates in Holocaust concentration camps, the 45-minute Holocaust Cantata is an emotional, musical journey through one of the bleakest episodes in human history. Working from translations of original Polish materials found in the archives of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and starting with just a single line of melody, McCullough has fashioned a haunting choral tribute to the 6 million Jews who were systematically persecuted and murdered as well as to the millions of other individuals the Nazi Party classified as undesirables. What emerges from the insanity of one of history s worst examples of man s inhumanity to man is a sense of music s life-affirming powers. Tickets available at polyphonynm.com $25 Premium Seating $20 General Seating A small number of tickets is available FREE to full-time students with ID
