DO NOT connect this product to any power supply or adapter other than one described in the manual, on the name plate, or specifically recommended by Yamaha. WARNING: Do not place this product in a position where anyone could walk on, trip over, or roll anything over power or connecting cords of any kind. The use of an extension cord is not recommended! If you must use an extension cord, the minimum wire size for a 25' cord (or less) is 18 AWG. : The smaller the AWG number, the larger the current handling capacity. For longer extension cords, consult a local electrician. This product should be used only with the components supplied or; a cart, rack, or stand that is recommended by Yamaha. If a cart, etc., is used, please observe all safety markings and instructions that accompany the accessory product. 5 PRECAUTIONS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING Please keep this manual in a safe and handy place for future reference. For AC adaptor WARNING This AC adaptor is designed for use with only Yamaha electronic instruments. Do not use for any other purpose. Indoor use only. Do not use in any wet environments. Do not put burning items, such as candles, on the unit. A burning item may fall over and cause a fire. CAUTION When setting up, make sure that the AC outlet is easily accessible. If some trouble or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch of the instrument and disconnect the AC adaptor from the outlet. When the AC adaptor is connected to the AC outlet, keep in mind that electricity is flowing at the minimum level, even if the power switch is turned off. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure to unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. For CLP-625 WARNING Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or other hazards. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following: Power supply/ac adaptor Do not place the power cord near heat sources such as heaters or radiators. Also, do not excessively bend or otherwise damage the cord, or place heavy objects on it. Only use the voltage specified as correct for the instrument. The required voltage is printed on the name plate of the instrument. Use the specified adaptor (page 33) only. Using the wrong adaptor can result in damage to the instrument or overheating. Use only the supplied power cord. Using the wrong power cord can result in damage to the instrument or overheating. Check the electric plug periodically and remove any dirt or dust which may have accumulated on it. Do not open This instrument contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the instrument or attempt to disassemble or modify the internal components in any way. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. Water warning Do not expose the instrument to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, or place on it any containers (such as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might spill into any openings. If any liquid such as water seeps into the instrument, turn off the power immediately and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. Then have the instrument inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. Never insert or remove an electric plug with wet hands. Fire warning Do not put burning items, such as candles, on the unit. A burning item may fall over and cause a fire. If you notice any abnormality When one of the following problems occur, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the electric plug from the outlet. Then have the device inspected by Yamaha service personnel. - The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged. - It emits unusual smells or smoke. - Some object has been dropped into the instrument. - There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the instrument. 6 CAUTION Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the instrument or other property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following: Power supply/ac adaptor Do not connect the instrument to an electrical outlet using a multiple-connector. Doing so can result in lower sound quality, or possibly cause overheating in the outlet. When removing the electric plug from the instrument or an outlet, always hold the plug itself and not the cord. Pulling by the cord can damage it. Remove the electric plug from the outlet when the instrument is not to be used for extended periods of time, or during electrical storms. Assembly Read carefully the attached documentation explaining the assembly process. Failure to assemble the instrument in the proper sequence might result in damage to the instrument or even injury. Location Do not place the instrument in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over. When transporting or moving the instrument, always use two or more people. Attempting to lift the instrument by yourself may damage your back, result in other injury, or cause damage to the instrument itself. Before moving the instrument, remove all connected cables, to prevent damage to the cables or injury to anyone who might trip over them. When setting up the product, make sure that the AC outlet you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the plug from the outlet. Even when the power switch is turned off, electricity is still flowing to the product at the minimum level. When you are not using the product for a long time, make sure to unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. Use only the stand specified for the instrument. When attaching it, use the provided screws only. Failure to do so could cause damage to the internal components or result in the instrument falling over. Connections Before connecting the instrument to other electronic components, turn off the power for all components. Before turning the power on or off for all components, set all volume levels to minimum. Be sure to set the volumes of all components at their minimum levels and gradually raise the volume controls while playing the instrument to set the desired listening level. Handling caution Do not insert a finger or hand in any gaps on the key cover or instrument. Also take care that the key cover does not pinch your finger. Never insert or drop paper, metallic, or other objects into the gaps on the key cover, panel or keyboard. This could cause physical injury to you or others, damage to the instrument or other property, or operational failure. Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the instrument, and do not use excessive force on the buttons, switches or connectors. Do not use the instrument/device or headphones for a long period of time at a high or uncomfortable volume level, since this can cause permanent hearing loss. If you experience any hearing loss or ringing in the ears, consult a physician. Using the bench (If included) Do not place the bench in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over. Do not play carelessly with or stand on the bench. Using it as a tool or stepladder or for any other purpose might result in accident or injury. Only one person should sit on the bench at a time, in order to prevent the possibility of accident or injury. If the bench screws become loose due to extensive long-term use, tighten them periodically using the specified tool in order to prevent the possibility of accident or injury. Keep special watch over any small children so that they don t fall off the rear of the bench. Since the bench does not have a backrest, unsupervised use may result in accident or injury. Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modifications to the instrument, or data that is lost or destroyed. Always turn the power off when the instrument is not in use. Even when the [ ] (Standby/On) switch is in standby status (power lamp is off), electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. The model number, serial number, power requirements, etc., may be found on or near the name plate, which is at the bottom of the unit. You should note this serial number in the space provided below and retain this manual as a permanent record of your purchase to aid identification in the event of theft. 7 NOTICE To avoid the possibility of malfunction/ damage to the product, damage to data, or damage to other property, follow the notices below. Handling Do not use the instrument in the vicinity of a TV, radio, stereo equipment, mobile phone, or other electric devices. Otherwise, the instrument, TV, or radio may generate noise. When you use the instrument along with an application on your ipad, iphone or ipod touch, we recommend that you set Airplane Mode to ON on that device in order to avoid noise caused by communication. Do not expose the instrument to excessive dust or vibrations, or extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a heater, or in a car during the day) to prevent the possibility of panel disfiguration, damage to the internal components or unstable operation. (Verified operating temperature range: 5 40 C, or F.) Do not place vinyl, plastic or rubber objects on the instrument, since this might discolor the panel or keyboard. In the case of a model with a polished finish, bumping the surface of the instrument with metal, porcelain, or other hard objects can cause the finish to crack or peel. Use caution. Maintenance When cleaning the instrument, use a soft and dry/slightly damp cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, alcohol, cleaning fluids, or chemical-impregnated wiping cloths. In the case of a model with a polished finish, gently remove dust and dirt with a soft cloth. Do not wipe too hard since small particles of dirt can scratch the instrument's finish. During extreme changes in temperature or humidity, condensation may occur and water may collect on the surface of the instrument. If water is left, the wooden parts may absorb the water and be damaged. Make sure to wipe any water off immediately with a soft cloth. 11 Basic Operations Setting Up Key Cover To open the key cover: Lift the cover slightly, then push and slide it to the end. Music Rest To raise the music rest: 3 1 To close the key cover: Slide the cover toward you and gently lower the cover over the keys. 2 To lower the music rest: CAUTION Be careful to avoid catching your fingers when opening or closing the cover. CAUTION Do not try to use the music rest in a half-raised position. When lowering the music rest, do not release your hands from the music rest until it is all the way down. Music Braces CAUTION Hold the cover with both hands when opening or closing it. Do not release it until it is fully opened or closed. Be careful to avoid catching fingers (yours or others, especially children s) between the cover and main unit. Do not place objects, such as a piece of metal or paper, on top of the key cover. Small objects placed on the key cover may fall inside the unit when the cover is opened and may be nearly impossible to remove. This could cause electric shock, short circuit, fire or other serious damage to the instrument. These braces are for holding the pages of music books in place. 12 Setting Up Turning the Power On 1. Connect the plugs of the AC adaptor in the order shown in the illustration. CAUTION Even when the [ ] (Standby/On) switch is in the standby status, electricity is still flowing to the instrument at a minimum level. When not using the instrument for an extended period of time, be sure to unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet. DC IN jack (page 10) DC plug AC adaptor Power cord WARNING Use the specified adaptor (page 33) only. The use of other adaptors may result in irreparable damage to both the adaptor and the instrument. CAUTION Remove the AC plug from the AC outlet when the instrument is not to be used for extended periods of time, or during electrical storms. AC plug AC outlet The shape of the plug and outlet differ depending on the locale. Follow this procedure in reverse order when disconnecting the AC adaptor. 2. Press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch to turn the power on. [ ] (Standby/On) switch Setting the Volume When you start playing, use the [MASTER VOLUME] knob to adjust the volume of the entire keyboard sound. Level decreases CAUTION Do not use this instrument at a high volume level for a long period of time, to avoid damaging your hearing. Auto Power Off Function To prevent unnecessary power consumption, this instrument features an Auto Power Off function that automatically turns the power off if the instrument is not operated for approximately 30 minutes. If you do not want to use the Auto Power Off function, disable the function as described below. The setting (disabled or enabled) is retained even if the power is turned off. Default setting: Enabled Level increases Disabling the Auto Power Off function Power indicator Power indicator If you close the key cover without turning the power to standby, the power indicator remains lit, indicating that the power is still on. When you re ready to turn the power to standby, press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch again for a second. The power indicator turns off. When the instrument is turned off While holding down the A-1 key (the lowest key), press the [ ] (Standby/On) to turn the instrument on. Using Headphones Since this instrument is equipped with two [PHONES] jacks, you can connect two sets of standard stereo headphones. If you are using only one set of headphones, insert a plug into either jack, which automatically shuts off the speakers. Reproducing the Natural Sensation of Sound Distance Binaural Sampling and Stereophonic Optimizer This instrument features two advanced technologies that allow you to enjoy exceptionally realistic, natural sound, even when listening on headphones. Binaural Sampling ( CFX Grand Voice only) Binaural sampling is a method that uses two special microphones set at the ear position of a performer and records the sound from a piano as it is. Listening to the sound with this effect through headphones gives the impression of being immersed in the sound, as if it was actually emanating from the piano. Moreover, you can enjoy the sound naturally for a long time without ear strain. When the default voice, CFX Grand (page 18) is selected, connecting the headphones automatically enables the binaural sampling sound. Stereophonic Optimizer (Voices other than CFX Grand ) The Stereophonic Optimizer is an effect which reproduces natural sound distance like the sound of binaural sampling even though you hear it on headphones. When a voice other than CFX Grand (page 18) is selected, connecting the headphones automatically enables the Stereophonic Optimizer. Default setting: On Standard stereo phone plug CAUTION Do not use headphones at a high volume for an extended period of time; doing so may cause hearing loss. Using the headphone hanger You can hang the headphones on this instrument. Refer to Keyboard Stand Assembly on page 32 for instructions on installing the headphone hanger. 14 Playing the Piano Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC) With this function, the sound quality of this instrument is automatically adjusted and controlled according to the overall volume. Even when the volume is low, this lets you hear both low sounds and high sounds clearly. Default setting: On To turn on IAC: While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press the F 0 key. To turn off IAC: While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press the F0 key. Lowest key F 0 To adjust IAC Depth: While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press one of the A-1 D 0 keys. 15 Playing the Piano Using the Pedals Damper Pedal (Right) Pressing this pedal will sustain notes longer. Releasing this pedal immediately stops (damps) any sustained notes. This pedal also features a half-pedal function that creates partial sustain effects, depending on how far down you press the pedal. Sostenuto Pedal (Center) Pressing this pedal while holding the notes will sustain the pressed notes (as if the Damper Pedal had been pressed), but all subsequently played notes will not be sustained. This makes it possible to sustain a chord or single low note, for example, while the other notes are played staccato. Soft Pedal (Left) When you press the damper pedal here, this note and the notes you play before you release the pedal sustain longer. When you press the sostenuto pedal here while holding the note, the note will sustain as long as you hold the pedal. Pressing this pedal will reduce the volume and slightly change the timbre of the notes. The notes played before this pedal is pressed are not affected. If the damper pedal doesn t work, make sure that the pedal cord is properly plugged into the main unit (page 31). Half-pedal function This function allows you to vary the sustain length depending on how far the pedal is pressed. The farther down you press the pedal, the more the sound sustains. For example, if you press the damper pedal and all notes you are playing sound a bit murky and loud with too much sustain, you can release the pedal half way or higher to decrease the sustain (murkiness). While the sostenuto pedal is held, the organ and strings Voices sound continuously without decay after the notes have been released. When you select the Jazz Organ Voice, pressing the left pedal switches between fast/ slow rotation of the rotary speaker (page 18). Using the Damper Resonance The Damper Resonance effect simulates the sustain sound of the damper pedal on a grand piano, as if you were pressing the damper pedal and playing the keyboard. This effect is applied to the entire sound of the instrument. To turn on the Damper Resonance: While holding [PIANO/VOICE], press the G 2 key. 16 Playing the Piano Setting the Operation Confirmation Sounds When a setup is changed using a button and key combination, an operation sound ( On, Off, click, tempo value input) is sounded. This confirmation sound can be enabled (ON) or disabled (OFF) as desired. Turning the Operation Confirmation Sounds on While holding down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE] simultaneously, press the A -1 key. Default setting: On Turning the Operation Confirmation Sounds off While holding down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE] simultaneously, press the A-1 key. (On) A -1 Lowest key A-1 (Off) Changing the Touch Sensitivity You can specify the Touch Sensitivity (how the sound responds to the way you play the keys). While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press one of the A6 C7 keys. A 6 This setting is disabled with some Voices, such as an organ sound. Default setting: B6 (Medium) A6 Highest key (C7) B6 Key A6 Touch Sensitivity Fixed Description The volume level does not change at all regardless of whether you play the keyboard soft or hard. A 6 Soft The volume level does not change much when you play the keyboard soft or hard. B6 Medium This is the standard piano touch response. C7 Hard The volume level changes very widely from pianissimo to fortissimo to facilitate dynamic and dramatic expression. Often heard in jazz and rock music. The rotary speed of the rotary speaker effect can be switched by using the left pedal. Stereo-sampled, large-scale strings ensemble with realistic reverb. The [PLAY] lamp flashes, and the Demo Song for the current Voice starts. Starting with the selected song, the playback of the Demo Songs will continue. After the last demo song, the sequence then returns to the first Demo Song and repeats until you stop it. To change the Demo Song during playback: Press [+R] or [ L] to change to the next or previous Demo Song. To change to a specific Demo Song, press and hold down [DEMO/SONG], then press one of the C1 A1 keys. If you want to change the playback tempo, see page 17. Lowest key C1 A1 2. The appropriate Reverb Type and Depth are called up automatically when you select each of the Voices and Songs. This is why the Reverb Type need not be selected; however, you can change it if desired. To select a Reverb Type: While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press one of the C2 E2 keys. Selecting a Reverb Type C 2 D 2 Adjusting Reverb Depth G 4: depth 20 Reverb in Dual Mode (page 22) An optimum reverb type for the combination of Voices is assigned automatically. 21 Playing Various Musical Instrument Sounds (Voices) Transposing the Pitch in Semitones You can shift the pitch of the entire keyboard up or down in semitones in order to facilitate playing in difficult key signatures, or to easily match the pitch of the keyboard to the range of a singer or other instruments. For example, if +5 is selected, playing key C produces pitch F, letting you play a song of F major as though it were in C major. To transpose the pitch down: While holding down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE], press a key between F 2 (-6) and B2 (-1). To transpose the pitch up: While holding down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE], press a key between C 3 (+1) and F 3 (+6). To restore the normal pitch: While holding down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE], press the C3 key. F 2 F Lowest key Transpose down Transpose up C3: Normal pitch Fine-tuning the Pitch You can fine-tune the pitch of the entire instrument in about 0.2 Hz steps. This lets you accurately match the keyboard pitch to that of other instruments or CD music. To tune up (in about 0.2 Hz steps): Press and hold down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE] simultaneously, and press [+R]. To tune down (in about 0.2 Hz steps): Press and hold down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE] simultaneously, and press [ L]. Hz (Hertz) This unit of measurement refers to the frequency of a sound and represents the number of times a sound wave vibrates in a second. Setting range: Hz Default setting: A3 = Hz To set the pitch to Hz: Press and hold down [DEMO/SONG] and [PIANO/VOICE] simultaneously, and press the A0 key. Engage the Dual mode. While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], simultaneously hold down two keys between C1 and A1 to select the two desired Voices. For information on which Voices are assigned to the keys, refer to Voice List (page 18). The Stereophonic Optimizer (page 13) is not effective when you select C1 ( CFX Grand ) for one of the two Voices. Adjusting the balance C1 A1 C5 F5 F 5 C6 F Lowest key Engaging Dual mode Voice 1 Voice 2 Highest key Shifting the octave The Voice assigned to the lower key will be designated as Voice 1, and the Voice assigned to the higher key will be designated as Voice 2. To adjust the Balance between two Voices: While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press one of the F 5 F 6 keys. When the value is set to 0 (C6), the volume levels of the two Voices reset to their respective default settings. Settings below 0 increase the volume of Voice 2, while settings above 0 increase the volume of Voice 1, in relation to the other. 2. To exit from Dual mode, press [PIANO/VOICE]. While holding down [PIANO/VOICE], press [+R] and [ L] simultaneously to engage Duo. The keyboard is divided into two sections, with the E3 key as the Split Point. Different Voices cannot be assigned to the Right Voice and Left Voice. The Split Point cannot be changed from E3. Equivalent to C3 (middle C) Split Point E3 Equivalent to C3 (middle C) Left section (Voice 2) Right section (Voice 1) 2. One person can play the left section of the keyboard while the other plays the right. To shift the Octave for each section: Same operation as in Dual (page 22). In Duo, the left section is assigned to Voice 2, while the right section is assigned to Voice 1. To adjust the volume balance between two keyboard sections: Same operation as in Dual (page 22). Settings below 0 increase the volume of Left Voice (Voice 2), while settings above 0 increase the volume of Right Voice, in relation to the other. Pedal function in Duo Damper Pedal: Applies Sustain to the right section. Sostenuto Pedal: Applies Sustain to both sections. Soft Pedal: Applies Sustain to the left section. 3. To exit from Duo, simultaneously hold down [PIANO/ VOICE] and press [+R] and [ L]. Setting range: Setting range: Sounds played in the left section are played from the left speaker, and sounds played in the right section are played from the right speaker.
