As I celebrate my 10th year with this group of talented musicians, it is gratifying to reflect upon the remarkable growth the Orchestra has achieved over the years. The dedication and diligence of each member is evident in R. Joseph Scott the ever improving level of artistry displayed in each performance. The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra s 2008/2009 season offers a dynamic array of music selections from traditional works to new favorites. The entire family will enjoy performances such as Rimski-Korsakov s lush Scheherazade; Prokofiev s Peter and the Wolf (narrated King FM Classic Kids announcer, Marta Zekan); Tchaikovsky s rousing Capriccio Italien; and a host of popular music included on our Holiday Pops concert in December and our Music Around the World Pops concert in June. Be sure to visit our web-site at for a complete listing of works presented this season. Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert! - R. Nim began Lyric Opera Northwest in 2004 for a number of reasons. First, as long-time international, prize winning performers, they wanted to pass along their knowledge to the next generation of singers. Second, knowing the difficulties of aspiring artists to find work and master their craft, they knew a vacuum existed between the college/university level singer and jobs with major companies. They wanted to fill that vacuum and provide such opportunities. HISTORY Third, knowing firsthand the RegieTheater domination of the operatic arts to lean toward the provocative and outrageous, they wanted to contribute to the dignity of the world s highest form of Western Civilization art and its ageless traditions. Fourth, they wanted to bring access of this art form into the community and provide citizens of all ages and backgrounds the chance to experience the incredible joy and artistic zeal they had enjoyed for several decades upon the world s stages. R. Joseph Scott, conductor of the Sammamish Symphony Orchestra is the resident Conductor of Lyric Opera Northwest and is currently rehearsing for... Lyric Opera Northwest has produced 5 operas to date, Carmen, Madama Butterfly, La Traviata, Hansel and Gretel, and Le Nozze di Figaro. This August they will renew their efforts and bring two of opera s greatest one-act hits to the Meydenbauer stage, Cavelleria Rusticana, and I Pagliacci. We hope to see you there. 5 Program Notes Program Notes Puccini, Giacomo ( ) Preludio Sinfonico Puccini was born into a Tuscan family with five generations of rich musical history. He was introduced to music as a child, but his interest was piqued when he attended a Verdi opera, Aida. At age 21, he decided to become an opera composer and entered the Conservatory. Puccini is most known for his melodic and passionate operas, La Boheme, Tosca, and Madame Butterfly. His music shows the influence and drama of Verdi and Wagner. Preludio Sinfonico is a beautiful piece for orchestra and contains many of the elements which make his music beloved everywhere. Considered to be the most famous man in the world in the early 1920 s, he visited New York City and loved the fast pace and lights. He bought a boat, another car (he owned eight!) and was given a gramophone by Thomas Edison. Only a few years later, he died in Belgium of cancer and was given a state s funeral. When news of his death was received during a performance of La Boheme in New York City, the opera Henry Bischofberger Violins Third Generation Violin Maker Kirkland, WA Now on the Eastside! Sales Appraisals Repairs Rentals was stopped and the orchestra played Chopin s Funeral March. Puccini lived most of his life in a lovely villa he built on a lake near Lucca. It is now a museum, Villa Museo Puccini, owned by the composer s granddaughter. In the past decade, a couple of centers have been opened to honor and perform Puccini s works, one in Lucca and the other in the U.S. In December 2008, these centers honored Puccini by celebrating the 150th anniversary of his death. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolai ( ) Scheherazade Born near St. Petersburg, Russia, Rimsky-Korsakov was one of The Five famous Russian composers of his time. He was a prominent composer and teacher. Known for his use of folk and fairy tale subjects, Rimsky-Korsakov possessed extraordinary orchestration skill. Showing his musical talent at a young age, as a young man, Rimsky- Korsakov yielded to his parents pressure to join the navy, which was the familial tradition. When he wasn t at sea, however, he continued to hone his musical interest and skills, and befriended other musicians who were to become, as he was, part of The Five. He finally left the navy, attended the Conservatory, teaching himself much of what was missing in his musical education.. He spent decades at the Conservatory, writing textbooks on harmony and orchestration, and teaching some of our most beloved Russian composers, e.g. Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Scheherazade is considered Rimsky-Korsakov s most popular work. Based on The Book of One Thousand Nights, it is a symphonic suite in four related parts. It tells the story of a brash, loud sultan who is sure that all women are false and faithless. His plan is to kill each of his wives after their wedding nights. The opening theme of the suite shows the booming voice of the domineering sultan and also the beautiful melody of his sultana Scheherazade. She devises a clever plan to save her life by weaving tales for him each night before bed. These tales intrigue the sultan and instead of killing her, he keeps her alive so he can hear the next part of the story. Throughout the suite, Scheherazade s haunting melody is heard in the violinist s solo, and by the end of the piece, the two themes of the main characters are woven together like the tales, and sultan s theme is softened and warmed along with his heart. Vaughn-Williams, Ralph ( ) Serenade to Music for 16 Voices Known as The Man Who Set England to Music, Ralph Vaughn- Williams had a long and extensive career. Schooled at Trinity College, Cambridge, he went on to receive musical training at the Royal College of Music. This was followed by instruction from Max Bruch in Berlin and Maurice Revel in Paris. Vaughn-Williams wrote in nearly every genre of music: symphonic, operatic, chorale music and film scores. He was also a collector of English folk music and song. In 1906, he was the musical editor of the English Hymnal, arranging many of the hymns. Vaughn-Williams, a down-to-earth man, shrugged off formal recognition. He never allowed the king to knight him, preferring to live his life as an ordinary member of the English rural middle class. He is, however, thought to be the father of English classical music, over Britten or Holst, and the best English composer since Henry Purcell. After his death, his ashes were interred next to Purcell s at Westminster Abbey. Serenade To Music was written as a tribute to the conductor Sir Henry Wood on the fiftieth anniversary of his first concert. The text is drawn from Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice, Act V where there is a discussion about music. Written for sixteen of the most eminent British singers of the day (whose initials are written next to their lines in the published score), Serenade is a beautiful moving piece, even bringing Rachmaninoff to tears at its original presentation. Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus ( ) Overture to the Magic Flute prolific and A influential composer of the classical era, Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria. He was a child prodigy and traveled around Europe with his family, performing. Writing his first composition at age six, he wrote more than 600 compositions over his lifetime. Beethoven influenced his work, leading to classical works with clarity, balance, and transparency. The Magic Flute was written quite late in Mozart s life and was premiered just a couple of months before his death. It is an opera in two acts, written in the form of a singspiel, a popular form of the day that included both singing and spoken dialogue. The opera is based on a love story, set in Egypt. A magic flute helps Tamino endure the trials set before him in order to be with his love, Pamina, who is being held by Sarastro. Did you know? The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra also offers small chamber groups to perform at private functions. Add a touch of class to your party or event. Call to schedule. 6 7
