5 The Head Joint and Embouchure Forming a Proper Embouchure (Video available on bandroxcom) Before starting ith your flute it is important to kno ho to control the aiming of your air hen you blo out a breath Start ith these to exercises: Air Exercise #1 Hold your left hand about a foot aay from your face palm facing toard you Raise your left arm so your lips are even ith the spot beteen your elbo and your fingertips Take a full breath and blo air up and don your arm ithout moving your head Move your ja slightly outard to make the air go up Move your ja slightly donard to make the air go don Air Exercise # Rest your right hand index finger beteen the first and second knuckles under your loer lip Take a full breath and strongly hisper the ord Pooh Make sure the P sound is strong Whisper Pooh again but keep bloing Feel the air on your finger? Don t puff your cheeks! No it s time to make your first sound ith your head joint It is best to do this exercise hile looking into a mirror so you can see your embouchure Before opening your flute case be sure that it is right side up Carefully take out the head joint (it s the only part ithout keys) Holding the head joint ith both hands place the lip plate of the head joint in the same spot under your loer lip here you put your index finger in the previous exercise The head joint extends to your right Your loer lip should stay soft and cover about one third of the embouchure hole Take a full breath and strongly hisper the ord Pooh Make sure the P sound is strong Whisper Pooh again but keep bloing and you should get a steady tone! Make sure your aperture (the hole beteen your lips) is centered over the embouchure hole Once you can get a clear steady tone every time use Tooh instead of Pooh 5

9 Flute Time! Ho to Assemble Your Flute (Video available on bandroxcom) The flute is probably the most fragile of all the band instruments It is easy to damage if you are not very careful hen assembling and disassembling your flute Alays keep your flute in its case hen you are not playing Never put anything in your case that it as not designed to hold The pressure from papers or music in your case can bend the rods and keys If you have to set it don put it on a flat surface ith the keys facing up Never leave it on a music stand The flute is meant to fit together ithout using any grease If you have difficulty fitting the sections together use a dry cloth to clean the tenons and the sockets that the tenons fit into Pick up the body of the flute by the edges never by the keys Hold the body vertically in your LEFT hand placing your hand on the spot here you see the logo so that you don t grab the keys Keep your left hand in this spot during the hole assembly Pick up the head joint in your RIGHT hand and place it into the body of the flute Don t push it all the ay in; stop ith about a quarter inch left to go Line up the embouchure hole of the head joint ith the keys of the body so that they are in line Next pick up the foot joint ith your RIGHT hand Turn the foot joint around and gently slide it don in your hand until you are closing the to large keys ith your palm It is very important that you put your THUMB UP above the keys and not around the bottom This makes it so you don t bend the large keys belo your palm Line up the long rod of the foot ith the center of the keys on the body You disassemble the flute exactly the same ay but in reverse order Ho to Hold Your Flute (Video available on bandroxcom): This is much easier to see than to read in ords Watch the video and pay close attention in class Your lip goes in the same spot it did hen you used just the head joint and the rest of the flute extends out to the right Your left hand alays faces toards you Rest the flute on the loest section of the outside of your left hand s index finger Your finger touches the flute body beteen the to topmost keys and supports the flute from belo On the top of the flute place your left hand index finger on the nd key your middle finger on the th key and your ring finger on the 5th key Your pinky ill hang just above the side curved-shaped key and your thumb rests on the long key underneath the flute Your right hand alays faces aay from you Place your index middle and ring fingers on each of the last three keys found on the body of the flute (don t count the keys on the foot joint) Your pinky rests on the first key of the foot joint The pad of your right thumb goes under the flute directly belo your index finger Your right hand fingers curve naturally around the flute to rest on the keys Your hand should be relaxed and curved like you are holding a tennis ball or forming the letter C 9

18 The Treble Clef Staff The musical alphabet uses only the letters ABCDEFG When you reach the letter G you start over ith A The diagrams belo sho the same thing in to different ays To read music you need to memorize the lines and spaces The first diagram shos the traditional method of learning the lines and spaces The four spaces ithin the staff spell the ord FACE It s easy if you think of SPACE- FACE! The lines from bottom to top can make a phrase like Every Good Boy Does Fine Can you create another phrase using EGBDF? ==== F D E A C G Fine Does Boy Good Every The second diagram shos the same letter names for the lines and spaces as the first diagram When moving up the staff from line to space you ill notice that the letters are in alphabetical order When a note is too lo or too high to fit on the staff short lines are added to extend the staff These are called ledger lines ==== B C D A C D E F G B A G F E Ledger Line B Ledger Line 18
