The program is designed to produce mid-level to professionallevel producers, engineers, and musicians. The course of study will cover all aspects of the skill production process including recding, marketing, and distribution. Develops advanced skills in sight singing and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic dictation continued from either MUS 2M MUS 3M. MUS 5 Beginning Jazz/Pop Music They Theetical fundamentals of jazz and related modern music, from rhythmic notation, clefs, and intervals through 13th chds with alterations. MUS 6 Fundamentals of Music Introduces common practice musical notation through musical reading of key signatures, intervals, triads and progression. May be taught in a Distance-Learning Fmat. Transfer Credit: Transfers to CSU, UC, with limits: No credit if taken after MUS 1 1M. MUS 7 Music Synthesis, Sampling, and Electronic Music Introduces the use of synthesizers and digital sampling in the composition of electronic music. Topics include: analogue synthesis, digital synthesis, digital sampling, sample editing, digital processing, MIDI and electronic music composition, including hands-on experience f individual projects. Basic knowledge of music fundamentals (equivalent to MUS 6 MUS 5A) is recommended f this course. MUS 9A Advanced Jazz They/Beginning Jazz Arranging Recommended Preparation: MUS 6 MUS 5 equivalent skills; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Continues study of jazz they and introduces jazz arranging. Includes chd spelling, chd progression, rhythm, melody, chd notation, instrument ranges. Fm and music arranging f nine pieces. Knowledge equivalent to beginning jazz they music fundamentals is recommended f this course. MUS 10 Music Appreciation Studies music of western civilization during the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century periods. Understanding and enjoyment of music is developed by the study of the elements of music and other concepts essential to the communication of ideas and emotion. Course may be taught in a Distance-Learning Fmat. MUS 10M Histical Survey of Music Prerequisite: MUS 5 MUS 6. Introduces music histy and literature of western culture from Renaissance through the present day, including imptant composers, masterwks and stylistic trends. Sce reading, listening, and introduction to research tools. This course may be taught in a Distance-Learning Fmat. MUS 11A Jazz Appreciation Designed f the student to become an active listener of jazz, to be aware of what is happening, and how and who is making it happen. Aesthetic criteria f examining and evaluating jazz perfmances. MUS 11LA Latin American Music Appreciation Introduces the folk and popular musical traditions of Latin American cultures, with an emphasis on cultural roots and the evolution of contempary regional styles. Weekly reading assignments, participation in online discussions and research, and listening to recded music through recdings and attendance at live perfmances. This course may be offered in a Distance-Learning Fmat. MUS 12 Wld Music Surveys the traditional music cultures of Asia, Africa, Europe, Native America and Latin America. Emphasis is on the evolution and perfmance practices of musical styles and the relationship between a culture's music and its religious, political, and social structure. May be offered in a Distance-Learning Fmat. 4

5 MUS 13A Survey of American Popular Music Surveys American popular music as represented by pop, rock, jazz, classical, country western, theatre music, regional and traditional folk music and their cross cultural and wld music influences. May be offered in a Distance-Learning Fmat. MUS 15A Beginning Jazz and Popular Solo Voice The study and perfmance of songs in the popular and jazz idioms: phrasing, expression, stage presence and microphone techniques. Students should have some ability to read music and sing a melody. MUS 15B Advanced Jazz and Popular Solo Voice Prerequisite: MUS 15A equivalent skills. Advanced study and perfmance of songs in the popular and jazz idioms. Advanced coverage of 15A areas. Analysis of histical and motivational aspects of perfmances. MUS 16 Applied Music: Woodwinds, Strings, Brass, Piano, Voice, Percussion 1 unit; 2 hours Lecture Applied instruction f music majs/mins in the student's specific perfming medium, with emphasis on technique and perfmance. Scholarship students are required to be concurrently enrolled in a music they class and a perfmance class. Audition is required to scholarship consideration. MUS 17A Beginning Voice Fundamentals of singing techniques, including breath suppt and tone production. Studies traditional vocal repertoire of music by composers from the baroque to the twentieth century. Students should have some ability to read music. MUS 17B Intermediate Voice Prerequisite: MUS 17A equivalent skills. Continues the study of fundamentals of singing techniques, including breath suppt, tone production and perfmance practice. Studies traditional vocal repertoire of music by composers from the Baroque to the 20th Century. MUS 17C Advanced Voice Prerequisite: MUS 17B equivalent skills. Continues the study of singing techniques, emphasizing resonance and legato tone. Traditional vocal repertoire of music by composers from the Baroque to the twentieth century. MUS 18A Beginning Wind (Band) Instruments Group instruction on flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French hn, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. No experience necessary. Students should provide their own instruments. Some instruments are available f checkout from the music department. MUS 18B Intermediate Concert Band Recommended Preparation: MUS 18A; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Study and perfmance of band literature f intermediate wind players: flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French hn, bass and percussion. Emphasis on sight-reading and rehearsal techniques. Must have ability to read intermediate music at sight and play an instrument with intermediate proficiency. 5

6 MUS 18J Intermediate Jazz Band Recommended Preparation: MUS 18A equivalent experience; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Presents the study and perfmance of jazz ensemble literature f intermediate wind, brass and rhythmic section (keyboard, guitar, bass, percussion). Emphasizes sight-reading and rehearsal techniques. Must have ability to read intermediate music at sight and play an instrument with intermediate proficiency. MUS 19 Beginning Strings Provides beginning level group instruction in how to play the violin, viola, cello and string bass. Use of both rote and note approaches. No experience necessary. Students should provide their own instruments. Some are available f class use only. MUS 20 Intermediate Orchestra Instruments Recommended Preparation: MUS 18A MUS 19; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Provides intermediate instruction f string and chestra wind players: violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, oboe, bassoon, recder, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, F hn, piano, and percussion. The class emphasizes sight reading and rehearsal techniques of many pieces. Basic knowledge of instrumental music equivalent to MUS 18A MUS 19 is needed f this course. Must have ability to read intermediate music at sight and play an instrument with proficiency. MUS 22A Intermediate Piano Prerequisite: MUS 51B equivalent skills. Continues technical studies, improvisation, perfmance, and practicing of piano literature. Students should have an understanding of basic (equivalent to Music 51B) technique, they and music reading. Students should be able to play simple pieces with independent hands f classical and popular styles. MUS 23 Advanced Piano Prerequisite: MUS 22A equivalent skills. Continues technical keyboard studies with an emphasis on musical analysis, interpretation, perfmance, literature and style. Class and private instruction. Students should have an understanding of technique, they and music reading equivalent to MUS 22A at the intermediate piano level. MUS 24A Beginning Jazz Improvisation Introduced element and stylistic practices of jazz improvisation f classroom and public perfmance. Accuracy of technique, validity of style, shadings of interpretation, disciplines of rehearsal and perfmance. Students should have the ability to play an instrument with proficiency and read music at sight. MUS 24B Intermediate Jazz Improvisation Prerequisite: MUS 24A equivalent skills. Continuation of the basics and scale foundations f jazz improvisation initiated in MUS 24A. MUS 24C Advanced Jazz Improvisation Prerequisite: MUS 24B equivalent skills. Designed to give students the ability to perfm improvised solos to standards and other jazz compositions. Improvisation both by memy and by reading chd symbols. Knowledge of jazz improvisation equivalent to MUS 24A and 24B is recommended f this course. MUS 26A Beginning Jazz/Rock Guitar Techniques Introduces guitar techniques commonly used in jazz and rock music. Extended chds, chd substitutions, modes, scale patterns, comping, chd melody playing. Students should have experience equivalent to a beginning popular music guitar course. 6

7 MUS 26B Advanced Jazz/Rock Guitar Techniques Prerequisite: MUS 26A equivalent skills. Continues study of guitar techniques with in-depth fretboard technique, extended harmony chd substitution, improvisation techniques and chd solo playing. Students should have experience equivalent to a jazz/rock guitar course. MUS 27 Beginning Popular Guitar Techniques Studies basic guitar techniques f popular and jazz music: student should have own instrument and knowledge of at least eight chds on the guitar. MUS 28 Popular Songwriting 2 units; 3 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Techniques and ideas f the songwriter and the serious student of popular music. Popular songs, and student compositions discussed in terms of fm, rhythm, melody, harmony and the lyrics/music relationship. Basics of copyrights and publishing will also be covered. MUS 31A Fundamental Recding Techniques I 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Recommended Preparation: MUS 5 MUS 6; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Introduces basic recding and music production skills, utilizing analog and computer-based technologies. Topics include microphones, multi-track recding, digital audio, mixing, MIDI, the behavi of sound, live sound, and commercial music production. Students will have individual lab time f hands on experience. Basic knowledge of music fundamentals (equivalent to MUS 6 5A) is recommended f this course. MUS 31B Fundamental Recding Techniques II 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Prerequisite: MUS 31A equivalent experience. Continues development of recding skills f studio musicians and home professional recding engineers. This course maximizes the production capabilities of combining computer technology with traditional recding techniques. MUS 31LS Recding Techniques III: Live Sound Production 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Prerequisite: MUS 31B equivalent experience. Studies elements of sound production related to live perfmance, including mixing, moniting, equipment set up, microphoning, EQ, music/theatrical production, event recding. Topics include: House/Monit mix, cabling and equipment, safety issues. MUS 31SP Recding Techniques IV: Studio Production 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Prerequisite: MUS 31B equivalent experience. Studies elements of pre-production, music arranging, rehearsal techniques, scheduling, budgeting, production, multi-track/live studio recding. This course challenges students to synthesize their technical skills and musical knowledge to create, prepare, and fully produce music projects. MUS 33A Beginning Classical Guitar Recommended Preparation: MUS 5, MUS 6; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Introduces basic classical guitar technique and repertoire f the student with little no experience, including music reading and right and left hand techniques. Students will learn simple pieces in the classical style. Students should provide their own guitars. MUS 33B Intermediate Classical Guitar Prerequisite: MUS 33A equivalent skills. Repeatability: May be taken a total of 3 times. Continues the study of classical guitar techniques from MUS 33A. Emphasis on technique, sight reading, development of repertoire, perfmance, and transcription and transposition. Student should have experience equivalent to beginning guitar. 7

8 MUS 34 Cabrillo Cantata Chus 1 unit; 3 hours Lecture, 2 hours Labaty Rehearsal and perfmance of chal music techniques and stylistic perfmance practice, emphasizing cantatas from the Baroque to the present day. A level of proficiency demonstrated by audition is required f this course. Audition includes sight-reading, feign languages and demonstration of musicianship skills. MUS 35 College Choir Studies traditional to contempary chal music f students with no previous chal background, with an emphasis on tone production, rhythm and sight singing skills. Should be taken in a two semester sequence. MUS 36 Chale Rehearsal and perfmance of chal music from various cultures and chal periods. Students should demonstrate basic music reading skills and match pitch. MUS 37W Watsonville Center Community Chus Exples chal music of the wld, including Latin, folk, gospel, African and traditional styles. F inexperienced and experienced singers. Students should have the ability to match pitch. MUS 38 Jazz Singers Study and perfmance of vocal jazz ensemble literature, including chal and solo wk. Topics will include: jazz styles, rhythm, musicianship, solo improvisation and ensemble sound concepts. Musical skills demonstrated by audition. MUS 39 Westside Community Folk Song/Gospel Choir F experienced and inexperienced singers, this group studies and perfms the literatures of folk, gospel, African, South American, and Asian music. Students should have the ability to match pitch. MUS 40 Chamber Music Ensemble 1 unit; 4 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Study and perfmance of chamber music f strings, winds, percussion and piano. Students with intermediate to advanced playing experience will be placed in an ensemble such as a trio, quartet quintet. Students must have the ability to read music at sight and play an instrument with proficiency. MUS 44 Reperty Jazz Ensemble 1 unit; 3 hours Lecture, 2 hours Labaty Study and preparation of professional level materials published from the swing era to present day literature suitable f the large jazz ensemble. Must be able to read music at sight and play an instrument; enrollment by audition only. MUS 46 Jazz Ensemble 1 unit; 3 hours Lecture, 2 hours Labaty Study, rehearsal, recding and perfmance of contempary big band jazz f advanced brass, wind, and rhythm section players. Enrollment by audition only. Must be able to read music at sight and play an instrument. MUS 47 Guitar Ensemble Rehearsal and perfmance of guitar music arranged f large and small ensembles. F guitarists who read music. Sight reading, following a conduct, group rehearsals, public perfmances. Students should have music instruction equivalent to MUS 26A and MUS 26B MUS 33A and MUS 33B. 8

9 MUS 48 Concert Band Study and perfmance of Baroque through Contempary wind literature. Students must have the ability to read music at sight and play a wind a percussion instrument at college level. Proficiency demonstrated by audition. MUS 49 College Symphonic Winds Study and perfmance of twentieth century band repertoire. Crect playing techniques applicable to the stylistic demands of twentieth century literature. Student must have the ability to read music at sight, play a wind percussion instrument at college level proficiency which is demonstrated by audition. MUS 50 Jazz Reperty Wkshop 1 unit; 4 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Recommended Preparation: MUS 24C equivalent skills; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Rehearsal and perfmance of compositions written in the jazz idiom f small groups of brass, wind and rhythm section players. Emphasis on chd progression analysis, solo devices, and improvisation. Audition required. MUS 51A Beginning Piano I Introduces technical and musical piano studies f students with little no experience. Basic hand technique, they and music reading will be taught as the student learns to play simple pieces with independent hands in classical and popular styles. MUS 51B Beginning Piano II Prerequisite: MUS 51A equivalent skills. Continues development of piano techniques, with me advanced wk on reperty, they and reading music at the keyboard. Student must be able to play simple pieces with independent hands in classical and popular styles, equivalent to MUS 51A, with an understanding of basic technique, they and music reading. MUS 51J Jazz Piano Techniques Recommended Preparation: MUS 51A equivalent skills; Eligibility f ENGL 100 and READ 100. Studies jazz piano style through group piano lessons, including chd and polychd voicings, symbols, chd substitutions, progressions, rhythmic patterns. Simple melodic techniques and accompaniment. Student should have the equivalent of one semester of piano training. MUS 52 Percussion Ensemble Introduces perfmance techniques of drums and percussion instruments used in contempary jazz, popular, classical and wld music. Exples rhythmic development and codination in sectional and full ensemble settings, with the intention of public perfmance. This course may be taken four times. MUS 52LA Latin American Drumming Develops hand drumming technique and rhythmic comprehension through the explation of African-influenced Latin American rhythms. Studies rhythms from Cuba and other Caribbean cultures, Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Peru. 9

10 MUS 53 Baroque Chamber Ensemble 1 unit; 4 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Study and perfmance of chamber music from the Baroque and other eras f strings, winds, percussion and piano. Discussion and lecture of baroque style, interpretation and perfmance. Must have the ability to read music at sight and play an instrument with proficiency. MUS 54 Reperty Chamber Ensemble 1 unit; 4 hours Lecture, 1 hour Labaty Study and perfmance of chamber music f winds, strings, piano and percussion in large chamber groupings. Augmented chamber, quintets and larger wks will be studied. Ability to read music at sight and play an instrument with proficiency. MUS 55 Cabrillo Orchestra Rehearsal and perfmance of standard chestral literature. Must have ability to read music at sight and play an instrument with proficiency. MUS 56 Latin American Music Ensemble Study and perfmance of music from selected Latin American cultures. Open to all musicians, including brass, winds, strings, guitars, keyboards, percussion and vocalists. Must be proficient on an instrument voice, as demonstrated by audition pri consent of instruct.
