2 Greetings, Ohio Music Therapists: A bi-annual state conference has been a longstanding tradition of Association of Ohio Music Therapists. This event has historically been an opportunity to network with music therapy professionals, interns and students from around the state, an educational opportunity to learn and share the latest research and clinical findings, and a chance to celebrate the growth of the profession in Ohio. This year s event promises to offer each of these opportunities and more. New in 2015 is a free 3-credit ethics CMTE to AOMT members. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to earn up to 11 CMTE credits at an extremely low cost to both members and non-members, as well as the opportunity to attend additional networking opportunities and social events. In addition, the program for this year s conference is varied and covers many topics that we hope you will find relevant and satisfactory. We are very excited to announce Dr. Deforia Lane as our keynote speaker. Dr. Lane has been a pioneer in the field and has much to share as we celebrate the growth of music therapy in Ohio. We look forward to her keynote address on Friday, September 25. This year s conference location is different than in past years. It is located at Holiday Inn Worthington, a delightful and practical conference facility. With free parking, extremely low room rates, and in close proximity to restaurants of varying price points, we hope it will satisfy. The hotel has held a block of guestrooms for conference attendees through September 4. When calling to make a reservation, you are asked to identify yourself as being part of the room block for Association of Ohio Music Therapists. This will allow you to enjoy the low room rate of $89.00 per night. The majority of reserved rooms are available with two queen beds, so will work out perfectly for sharing with a colleague! CMTE Information CMTE I: 5 CMTE Credits The Music Therapist Researcher: Creating Evidence in the Clinical Setting (8:00 am 1:15 pm; Friday, September 25) Kamile Geist, MA, MT-BC Course Description: In support of the current AMTA Strategic Priority on Research, the purpose of this training will be to provide learners with the knowledge they need to conduct their own evidence-based research studies. While clinicians may want to support the AMTA research initiative, the motivation, knowledge, skills and confidence to conduct research in the clinical setting may be lacking. In this training, the presenter will provide information on standard research designs that can be applicable to various clinical settings and will provide time and assistance for participants to formulate research questions as well as design their own studies that can be implemented in their own clinical setting. This knowledge will be assessed through question/answer, evidence of a plan of research and a short quiz on research designs. Participants will gain knowledge through lecture and video presentations as well as small group discussions. The presenter will provide time near the end of the training to answer questions and discuss the implications for the field of music therapy. How should a music therapist respond to a Facebook friend request from a client? Is it ok to publish testimonials on a business website? Can client pictures be used as part of a go-fund-me campaign? This presentation will consider the ethical implications of marketing in a digital era, such as dual relationships, compromise of client confidentiality, and risk of exploitation. CMTE III: 3 CMTE Credits Part I: Music Induced Cortical Arousal to Facilitate Plasticity for Neuro-Recovery after Traumatic Brain Injury Part II: The Recovery Process of Musicians after Brain Injury, Stroke, and Spinal Cord Injury (3:15 6:00pm; Saturday, September 26) Carol Shively Mizes, MT-BC Neurologic Music Therapy Fellow Course Description: This presentation will summarize the findings of a multitude of research in the area of music and the brain, music and cognition, music and intelligence, music and traumatic brain injury/stroke recovery with an emphasis on cortical arousal and the stage of agitation after coma. Cortical arousal is necessary for recovery and agitation is a devastating effect of severe traumatic brain injury. Many resources were reviewed for this presentation. The research in this area is exploding due to access

8 to brain imaging studies and the ability to see how music affects the brain. You will see brain imaging before and after music training in the young and old. The presenter will share videos of her work with severe TBI and stroke patients and their remarkable response to music along with their recovery stories.
