1 School Creative & Performing Arts Program 2016

2 Education in the arts is integral to the development of each human being. Those who have studied learning processes throughout the ages, beginning with Plato, have emphasised the importance of fostering an understanding and love of the arts in the education process both in and outside the formal classroom environment. The Creative and Performing Arts program at Lindisfarne not only caters for the student whom has elected to study either Drama, Dance, Music, and/or the Visual Arts but also for those who have chosen to focus their learning elsewhere. There are opportunities to join ensembles and to further their learning through the process of individual tutoring in their chosen discipline. All students have the opportunity to experience appreciating the arts by attending any of the events listed in this booklet. Years of research shows that an effective education in the arts is closely linked to almost everything we as a nation want for our children; academic achievement, social and emotional development, community engagement and equal opportunity. By participating in any one or more of the Visual Arts, Dance, Drama or Music disciplines we offer our students the chance to explore, to problem solve, to appreciate, to collaborate and to generally stretch their minds beyond what they thought was possible. 3 INFORMAL CONCERT SERIES Performing live for the first time can be a daunting task. No matter what your instrument, as soon as you are on stage with a live audience, nerves come into play and with that, sometimes flaws appear. Musicians need audiences and performance in order to hone their techniques and to receive valuable, critical feedback. This informal concert series is open to all students currently studying an instrument and is organised by Ms Tina Ross, Coordinator of Performing Arts, Preschool to Year 4, and Ms Lucie Schuricht, Coordinator of Music, Years 5 to 12. Participants in the String Program play in a string orchestra which encourages mastery of skills learnt in lessons and the enjoyment of making music with like minded people. 5 CONCERT BAND PROGRAM Taking part in the Concert Band Program is an exciting and unforgettable experience for all Year 7 students at Lindisfarne. It is a unique way for our students to access band instruments and instrumental lessons in a collaborative and supportive setting. End of semester concerts give students the opportunity to perform their newfound skills for family and friends. These skills include playing an instrument, interpreting a score, playing in ensemble and following the conductor s tempo and dynamic directions. Each concert will showcase our elective Instrumental Ensembles, showing students pathways to continue their involvement in Instrumental Music beyond Year 7. As well as celebrating student achievement in a supportive environment, the end of semester concerts are an opportunity for parents to meet the teachers and access further information. 8 LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP Term 1 School Life Drawing Workshops are designed for Years 11 and 12 Visual Arts students to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of the human form, how clothing, gesture and body language inform character and intent and how to breathe life into their figures. Drawing is a form of expression. Through observing the human form, students are guided to develop proficiency in drawing with a variety of art materials exploring positive and negative space. Disney senior animators still attend life drawing classes. You can draw animation and gesture without life drawing, but life drawing skills give you proportion, structure, perspective, and a certain vitality through rhythmic gestures, says Gnass, a former Disney TV storyboard artist. Gnass has taught at Disney since 1995, as well as DreamWorks Animation, Sony Pictures Imageworks and Nickelodeon, among others. You can t achieve dynamics without bones and structure, and in order to have structure you need to study it. From there one can extend out in any direction towards any style. 35 CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM P-12 School s Creative and Performing Arts Faculty prides itself on its strong and diverse ensemble program; a program which mirrors and is connected to the academic curriculum in the respective subject areas. At all times we foster practical participation where students are inspired to aim high, to strive for standards which exceed their original goals and to above all enjoy a positive involvement in the unique experience derived from performance whether in a group or on one s own. These empirical experiences play a vital role in encouraging our young students to become well-rounded people. The co-curricular program provides opportunities for students on both Sunshine Avenue and Mahers Lane campuses to develop the skills in their respective disciplines and also to work collaboratively which is a vital part of any successful group performance. Ensembles are designed to meet the needs of students with varying levels of experience and ability rather than being based on age. All students who learn an instrument are encouraged to join an ensemble where regular attendance is a given. There is no cost for these cocurricular activities. Students who wish to participate should see the relevant director to register their interest. 35
