3 31 Lesson Plan 31 Activity Title omments Gathering Drum with Hello Song Drum Groove (Exploration) Night Storm (SM Piano) Tideo (Ukulele) Farmer Brown s ow Drum Groove with Recorder: Find different ways to play the drum in response to the piano music. Night Storm: Before using the recording, review sounds on the drum to match the lyrics below. (See lesson 30 for more details.) Use the recording while singing and playing the sounds. Rolling Thunder, louds are coming, Looks like rain tonight; Wind is blowing, Rain is pouring, Thunder in the night. Tideo: Keep the beat on the drum while singing hello. Have each parent play the chord on the ukulele while everyone sings the name of that parent s child. Farmer Brown s ow: Introduce the cow puppet and encourage the children to sing the moo octave from low to high with the cow. Sing the A section while the cow is dancing on the drum. Keep the beat on the drum, or dance or run around the drum for the B section. Sing a few times before using the recording. Fade out if it seems too long. What s Needed Gathering Drum Guitar/Ukulele ow Puppet Finger Rhyme Beehive One Little Bumblebee Make a fist with one hand, the other hand wrapped around the fist. Bounce the hive shaped hands to the beat until it s time to count the bees. Here is a beehive, where are the bees? Hidden away where no one can see. Watch those bees come out of their hive Start with the thumb, index finger, and so on, as you count one through five. One, two, three, four, five! Bzzzzzzzzzz On bzzzzzzz everyone flies their pretend bee all around until it lands on a body part. Sing One Little Bumblebee song while the bee bounces on the part of the body shown by the teacher. TIP: For younger children, the parents can put their hands around the child s and bounce to the beat and massage and count the fingers. If available, surprise the children with a bee puppet. Bee Puppet [] Movement Bird Dance (New) Ask everyone to use their hands to make the little bird tweeting. Ask them to flap their wings like a bird. Ask them to shake their tails. Ask them to clap their hands. Ask if they can do each movement 4 times. ount to four while doing each movement. If needed, repeat while saying tweet, tweet, tweet, tweet, flap, flap, flap, flap, shake, shake, shake, shake, clap, clap, clap, clap. Los Machetes: To show this song has 3 sections, introduce each part by inviting them to walk as they tap their sticks, stop to scrape their sticks, and hit the sticks on the floor. Tell parents that our playing will only change at the end of each section. Perform with the recording. Who s That Hatching?: Remind them of the eggs from last week and ask if they remember what kind of babies hatched. Sing the song while tapping the beat using the rhythm sticks. Sing the song again while tapping the sticks 4 beats and scraping the sticks 4 beats. Explain that at the end of the song, they can play the sticks any way they like for silly hatching animals sounds. Display a new baby on a felt board and sing I m a baby. Encourage the children to sing Hello baby. Parent Tip: hildren love what they know. By repeating songs in class and at home, they will have more enjoyment and participation. ome and Play the Tambourine: Follow the directions in the lyrics to play along to the recording. Drivin to the Mountains: Use the tambourine as a steering wheel. Beep the horn. Ask what might be in the road causing us to stop the car. (Perhaps a rabbit or mouse or even a bear to lead into the next activity.) Explain there may be some bumps and curves along the drive. Participate in the pretend drive with the recording. Use an instrument to accompany everyone singing the star songs. Sing the goodbye song as a snuggle song, and then repeat with the recording. Farmer Brown s ow: Repeating from last week, introduce the cow puppet and encourage the children to sing the moo octave from low to high with the cow. Be patient and give them time to respond, and then use the recording. Dance around the drum on the B section if more movement is needed. Repeat the activity from last week. Ask the children where the bee will fly next. Movement Bird Dance Ask everyone to use their hands to make the little bird tweeting. Ask them to flap their wings like a bird, shake their tails, and clap their hands. Do each movement 4 times while counting to 4. For the B section, freely dance around the room like a bird, or move in a circle holding hands with their adult. Solo Singing uckoo lock uckoo lock: Sit in a circle and tap the sticks while chanting ticktock, ticktock. Sing the song, showing them to how to rest the sticks on their shoulder holders when singing now it s time until the cuckoo sings and comes out. Ladybugs: While telling the story practice the drum part for each verse: Verse 1: they start to feel the rain fingers lightly tap on the drum Verse 2: the wind starts to blow make circles/swishes on the drum Verse 3: they hear the loud thunder tremolo on the drum Verse 4: return the ladybugs to the top of the drum; if everyone plays the drum, the ladybugs will bounce, jump, and dance on the drum. After each verse count the ladybugs. Allow the children to touch the puppets. They love lady bug kisses! Repeat with the recording. Repeat this favorite tickle game from earlier in the school year. Ask everyone to crouch down with their flower and jump up on pop. Freely dance to the sopranino. Sing Flowers red and flowers blue, sing the flower given to you. Encourage each child to sing the color or name of their flower. Sing the critters verse while the children crouch back down with their flower and the parents pretend to be the little bugs eating the flowers. Be sure to sing this verse in a minor key. Ask each child to sing the color of the scarf they want to use. Echo their singing and describe their pitch; then give them a scarf. Instruct the children to pretend they are little baby birds and the scarves are their eggs. Using the recording, begin with bodies low, hiding underneath the scarves as if they are in an egg shell. Gradually rise, following the melodic direction and lyrics. (Exaggerate the movement pop head out from under the scarf, shake hips for the tail, shake and straighten the legs, and flap arms like wings.) Move around the room flying with the scarves for flies and flies Slowly fly from high to low as the scale goes down until boom, and then fall on the floor. Stand up quickly, flapping hands like little wings, and say the birdie is ready to try again. Repeat. Minuet in G: Freely move with the scarf, responding to the piano music. Go Round and Round the Village: reate verses about what we would do in the village with our instruments, such as: We re shaking in the village We re ringing in the village We re tapping in the village hoose one of the instruments and decide what to sing. Move around the circle playing the new verse. Move in and out of the circle for go in and out the windows. Primo Vere: V. Ecce Gratum, from armina Burana: Explain to the parents that this is arl Orff s most famous composition. We follow arl Orff s philosophy in our classes. Point out that the piece has three main sections. Practice each section before using the recording. For the introduction, raise the striker with one arm up; then raise the other arm, holding the triangle. Section A: Demonstrate playing the triangle on beat one. Sing 1, 2, 3, 4 using the melody of the A section for the first two circles. The third circle uses longer counting: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Repeat this section. Section B: Shake the maracas, following the melodic direction. Section : Play the beat on the tambourine. At the end of the section, play a tremolo by shaking the tambourine while holding it overhead. Pass out beanie babies for the children to hold as their adult holds them for snuggle time. For Out pops he! take the mouse finger out of the hole and pretend he s running all around, up and down the arms, legs or chest. TIP: Parents can put their finger in the hole created by the child. When the mouse pops up, the adult s finger is the mouse, running up and down the child s back, head, arms, legs, etc. This activity can also be done as a movement game with the kids acting out the little mouse, named Allegro, although this lesson already has a lot of movement.
