2 Dear Music Lover, Our season is the first of my two valedictory seasons before I retire to southwest France. I have chosen carefully for my remaining concerts, starting this fall with the return of great musical friends Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Esa-Pekka, despite his brilliance as a composer and popularity as a, is basically a shy person, as characterizes many Finnish people. He once told me that you really get to know a Finn when he looks down at your shoes instead of his own. Sir John Eliot brought us a momentous experience in 1999 when he and his forces performed the Beethoven Nine Symphonies in a single week. When he was 21 years old, he formed his now world-famous Monteverdi Choir, simply to read through that composer s Vespers. Now, we get to hear this great choir sing both of Beethoven s final great masterpieces as part of Beethoven: The Late Great. Many projects start at post-concert dinners with guest artists. After pianist Louis Lortie s triumph last year performing Liszt s complete Années de pèlerinage, our discussion over dinner led to the composer s other piano music and the continuing celebration of Liszt s 200th birthday. I added that 2013 would be the bicentennials of both Wagner and Verdi, many of whose works Liszt transcribed for piano. I suggested to Louis, Why don t you come back and do a program that we can call Louis Goes to the Opera! He is doing just that, with spectacular arrangements by Liszt and others, mostly of Wagner operas. I feel certain that we will hear some Verdi before that evening is over. We have a very special concert that will connect all of you to a great world achievement about to take place. Twenty-five years ago, Rotary International undertook the daunting challenge of helping rid the world of polio. They have raised and contributed more than $1 billion to the cause, and in 2011, there were just 600 reported cases worldwide. Rotary is still working hard to completely defeat this disease and see that no new cases emerge. Itzhak Perlman contracted polio at the age of four. He completely recovered but uses crutches to this day. Area Rotarians are selling a select number of seats to his recital for us, to contribute to the end of this horrible scourge. As a subscriber, you will be a part of this and have the opportunity to contribute to this cause. I have too many Yo-Yo Ma stories to fit in this letter. More on him later. See you at the concerts. I encourage you all to come and experience the music up close. Please... enjoy! Dean Corey President and Artistic Director Philharmonic Society of Orange County

After watching the play 33 Variations, the story of a terminally ill musicologist racing against her own mortality trying to solve the riddle of why Beethoven wrote 33 variations of Anton Diabelli s silly little waltz when he was only commissioned to write a single one, Mr. Corey was inspired to curate a number of Beethoven performances from his late period for the Philharmonic Society so audiences could explore this curious time in the composer s life. To present these great late works, Mr. Corey determined to bring in only the best, beginning with the Tokyo String Quartet and Brentano String Quartet performing some of Beethoven s last five string quartets and recruiting talented pianist Marino Formenti to learn the complete Diabelli Variations. This season, Mr. Corey will personally guide audiences during pre-concert talks for all Beethoven: The Late Great performances. The celebration features renowned Beethoven interpreter Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his et Romantique and Monteverdi Choir with two blazing performances of Beethoven s late masterpieces the Ninth Symphony and the Missa Solemnis heard in Orange County for the first time on period instruments, as well as Esa-Pekka Salonen s triumphant return to southern California with the Philharmonia performing Beethoven s Seventh Symphony. Also part of the celebration are the first and last of Beethoven s late string quartets, performed by the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet and the St. Lawrence String Quartet. 11
