10 Notes For The Tunes In M. C. Handel s BAGSTRAVAGANZA BAG-O-Saurus This BAG tune features a rhythm section, complete with electric guitar solos, and a wind section playing a funky rock groove with plenty of room for your recorder players to shine through. The form is simple, and the results can be awesome. The only way to use this (and all pieces in this collection) is with our Performance/Accompaniment CD. Normally, we might consider this too great a restriction, but particularly in the case of this tune, it is the power rock sound that makes it what it is, so trying to do it without the recording is futile. Our recording uses real live musicians playing real live instruments in a state-of-the-art recording studio, so that your young players feel like they are part of a contemporary rock group. And they are! If you wish to limit the technical demands of this piece even further than the published part, consider changing all repeated eighth notes to quarter notes. (You will note that whenever eighth notes are required, notes within each individual beat are repeated.) Rockin Around The Hound Dog s Blue Suede Shoe BAG How many BAG tunes let you dress like Elvis and move around while learning your fingerings? We have filled this piece with many options... and a very long title! The first set of options falls after the stop time section at 17. At bar 21, you can either have them play the notes as written, or chant/rap the title of the tune. (The kids in the recording session got a real kick out of this.) You can also split the class, letting half play and half rap, then reverse sides. For VERY beginning students, you may also want to use much simpler notes at 21, such as... G whole note / G half note, A half note / G whole note The real fun can start at bar 29. During the guitar solo, we suggest an active part that involves some movement and some enhanced learning. Adapt it to suit your needs, being sure that you allow plenty of time and space for the movement. Kids with recorders in their hands and/or mouths need extra care. Try to execute each move about beat one of the bar. Here is one possibility: 29 Carefully lower recorder 30...and stand 31 Hold recorder at front at arms length 32 Finger B 33 Move recorder to right 34 Finger A 35 Back to front 36 Finger G 37 Move recorder to left 38 Finger A 39 Back to front 40 Sit, and bring recorder to lips with care This routine will also work just fine while sitting, and that is a good way to start the learning anyway. You may also wish to have your players remain standing to the end, for effect, or perhaps bring them up only just before bar 41. For bars 55-57, your options are much as they were before: play the rhythm and notes of the title (as at bar 21), rap the rhythm, split the class and do both, or simplify the melody. Under the last bar, each player is allowed to play any rhythm or melody, as long as only the notes B, A, and G are used. As practice, go around the room letting each player have a chance, possibly playing a familiar melody fragment. Okay... add shades, grease back your hair a bit, and have a lot of fun with this one. Uh-huh-huh. Uh-huh-huh! This light pop style tune is one that your kids should immediately relate to. Using only B, A, and G (as all the tunes in this collection do), it is perfect for beginners. (It might be of interest to know that in trying to find a good name for it, we have 9
11 compiled enough puns on BAG to last us for years, providing that the tune matches the title!) BAGzilla M.C. Handel has captured the spirit of Zilla Fever with this BAG tune. Players have the choice of playing only or joining in the optional spoken (and roared ) parts. Guitars, synthesizers, basses, drums, and big ol footsteps make this tune a lot of fun to listen to and participate in. At the end of the intro and elsewhere in the song, students may roar freely as indicated, unless they are preparing to play. It s your call. You may decide to choose a few soloists after having roar auditions. Or perhaps you could alternate letting players roar. (In our experience, this would be considered a reward.) During the screaming guitar solo at measure 25, have your students pay particular attention to the articulations which are written. Discuss and demonstrate the difference between legato and staccato. (FYI: There is a song called Legato Staccato which you may find of interest in helping students learn and remember the difference between these two styles. It was published in MUSIC K-8, Vol. 14, No. 1, September/October Call us at for more information, or visit our web site at MusicK8.com Our web site is also where you can go to hear an excerpt of the tune.) There are two other bits of musical learning and/or reinforcement to keep in mind: the crescendo during the spoken parts in the first few bars, and the use of sixteenth notes for the exclamations, Zilla! JitterBAG Rumor has it that the jitterbug (a lively, swinging dance from the 1930s and 40s) has been enjoying a comeback with the younger generation (again) in recent years. Far be it from us to ignore this trend! As written, this BAG tune includes mostly half and whole notes. However, at measure 27, you will see an optional rhythm using a quarter note, eighth rest, eighth note tied to a half note, and an optional fall-off. This rhythm is exactly the same one that the winds are playing on the recording, so if you would like your students to attempt it, they have an excellent model. Paul Jennings big band arrangement/ orchestration of this tune will have your students tapping their feet along in no time. And don t forget to emphasize that the style is swing, which means the eighth notes are based on a triplet figure. The players on the recording demonstrate this style very well. (Fortunately, since most students are beginners, we do not write difficult continuous swinging eighth note patterns for them at this level. It s just neat to hear it on the instrumental background.) In the last measure of the piece, there is a fermata over the last note. While the background is holding, your players might wish to improvise a little bit using just the notes B, A, and G. You could let all of them play freely together, or you could have them take turns to reduce the potential intensity of sound that might result otherwise. (Admittedly, despite the cacophony of letting all of the players improvise together for the moment, it might help loosen any inhibitions they would otherwise have when asked to make up something they re playing.) A BAG O Tigers This BAG tune offers a little Dixieland fun for your beginning recorder players. You can adapt this arrangement of Tiger Rag any way you like. On the recording, we performed it as written, with the recorders playing the first time through the song. Then they sing at bar 11 the second time through, and at bar 27, they go back to playing. Listen to the recording for the Dixieland band, complete with tuba, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, banjo, piano, and drum set. This style was especially popular during the 1920s. The traditional words to this song are Hold that tiger, which you may use, but we like the friendlier Save that tiger, as tigers are in great danger of extinction in many places. At the very end, have just one soloist (or all) imitate a kitten for a surprise ending. Have your students be careful when resetting their embouchures after the roars to be sure to do so gently so as not to hurt their lips or teeth. 10
