5 CELTIC SONGS Use the music as a memory guide and try to play by ear as much as possible. It does not show any ornamentation or expression. Add your own bowing and ornamentation to enhance the tune. Play the tunes as you would sing them. If accompanying a singer, follow their phrasing and interpretation. You may need to change the key to suit the singer s vocal rang. Several players need to hold the tune, while one or two play an octave below or above and one or two may be able to improvise harmony lines. Key: D /Em DAWNING OF THE DAY (RAGLAN ROAD) Slow Irish air A traveller reminisces how his journey was made more pleasant by the company of a lovely young woman DIRTY OLD TOWN Ewan MacColl Scotsman Ewan wrote this song about Salford in England in The Dubliners and later the Pogues popularised the song and it is now the most requested Irish song! 12 SINGLE JIGS OR SLIDES are in 12/8 time They have 4 triple beats to the bar eg. They have the same dotted crochet and quaver beat as jigs but the groups of 4 triplets give a distinctive swing. To achieve the correct emphasis to the rhythm, use short bow strokes for the detached quavers. Note that sometimes the last quaver of the beat is slurred with the next beat.
