1 Perfect Balance Javier Perianes returns to the UK, makes his debut in Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, embarks on a recital tour of North and South America, and records concertos by Bartók and Ravel during compelling season Seldom, if ever, have I encountered such a combination of evident modesty and utter brilliance Sunday Times, May 2016 Schubert sonatas, concertos by Bartók and Saint-Saëns, and works by Debussy, Falla, Ravel and Mozart belong to the rich blend of repertoire to come from Javier Perianes over the next nine months. The Spanish pianist s season opens with a period of deep immersion in the music of Bartók. He is set to explore the composer s Piano Concerto No.3 in partnership with Pablo Heras-Casado, first in Helsinki with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (Wednesday 21 & Thursday 22 September), then in Munich with the Munich Philharmonic (Thursday 29 & Friday 30 September). Perianes will record Bartók s final concerto in Munich for future release on Harmonia Mundi, adding to the breadth of his critically acclaimed discography for the French independent label. He travels to Germany again next year to perform Manuel de Falla s Nights in the Gardens of Spain with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and François-Xavier Roth (Saturday 8 April) and Saint- Saëns s Piano Concerto No.2 with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Eivind Gullberg Jensen (Sunday 23 April), before launching a major recital tour of North and South America. I am very happy with the balance of my work and with the way things are progressing, comments Javier Perianes. This season I will incorporate Bartók s Third and Saint-Saëns s Second Piano Concertos into my repertoire, while returning to concertos by Ravel and Schumann, among others. There is a logic and line to the pieces that I have chosen to add, which comes naturally from works I have performed many times before. It makes sense, for example, to perform Saint-Saëns s Second after my experience of playing his Fifth Piano Concerto. And Bartók s Third Piano Concerto, written just a few months before the composer s death in 1945, goes well with my temperament and character. The piece is very energetic in its outer movements and has a beautiful, lyrical slow movement at its heart. It is full of powerful Hungarian folk rhythms but is also metaphysical and reflective. Perianes s schedule includes several visits to the UK, with six concerts this season. He comes to Wigmore Hall on Monday 14 November for a BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Recital in partnership with the Quiroga Quartet, offering the rarely performed Piano Quintet in G minor Op.49 by Enrique Granados together with Brahms s Piano Quintet in F minor Op.34. We hope to show the simplicity of the Granados Piano Quintet, which owes much to the music of Schumann, and to set that in the context of one of the most remarkable and monumental piano quintets ever written, he notes. Oxford s audience can hear Javier Perianes in recital at the Church of St John the Evangelist on Monday 21 November in the season closing concert of SJE International Piano Series. His programme comprises Schubert s Sonata for Piano in B-flat major D960, a selection of works by Debussy and Falla s vibrant Fantasia Baetica. He will perform the same repertoire for the Douglas Music Society in Parbold, Lancashire two days earlier and also at the Perth Concert Hall on Sunday 13 November. Javier Perianes will join the BBC Philharmonic and Sir Andrew Davis at Manchester s Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 21 January to perform Grieg s Piano Concerto. He returns to London on Thursday 2 March to make his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. I am really looking forward to performing Falla s Nights in the Gardens of Spain with these magical players and Pablo Heras-Casado, he observes. The Philharmonia makes such a warm sound, which is why I think Spanish music sits so well with them. I am also delighted to be playing Schumann s Piano Concerto with Vasily Petrenko and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, he says, referring to his performances with the orchestra in February. In addition to his work as concerto soloist, Javier Perianes will also undertake an extensive recital tour of North and South America. His itinerary opens with recitals in Washington D.C. (Saturday 29 April) and at the Frick
2 Collection in New York (Sunday 30 April). It unfolds with performances in Vancouver, San Francisco, Quito, Bogotá, Santiago de Chile and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aries. The pianist s choice of repertoire relates to two recording projects for Harmonia Mundi, the first devoted to works by Schubert, the second to the music of Ravel. His recital programmes comprise, among other works, Schubert s Sonata for Piano in A major D664, Sonata for Piano in B-flat major D960 and the Drei Klavierstücke D946, Ravel s Le tombeau de Couperin and Falla s arrangement for solo piano of movements from El amor brujo. Perianes prefaces his tour with the release in March of an all-schubert album, featuring the A major and late B- flat major sonatas. His journey around the Americas also flows from performances of Ravel s Piano Concerto in G major with the Orchestre de Paris and Josep Pons at the Philharmonie de Paris (Wednesday 15 & Thursday 16 March) and his recording of the work, together with Le tombeau de Couperin, for future release on Harmonia Mundi. Schubert occupies the first half of my recital programme, notes Javier Perianes. My relationship with his music began when I was very young and playing the Impromptus, the Klavierstücke and several of his piano sonatas. There is so much depth and personality to the Piano Sonata in B-flat major and also to the shorter Piano Sonata in A major. These pieces speak directly to the heart. So often they contain just the essence of the music, without ornament or anything to distract from their purity. The programme s second half is a very beautiful combination of Ravel s homage to Couperin and Falla s homage to the Spanish dance, which takes listeners on a journey from the classical dances of 18 th -century France to the traditional dances of Spain. I want to show the historic connection between Ravel and Falla, as well as the Iberian qualities in Ravel s music.
