THE FIVE PILLARS OF THE KIMBERLY CHOIRS: 1. High Quality Repertoire: Just as English students lives are enriched by exposure to great authors such as Homer, Shakespeare, Hawthorne, and Thoreau, the lives of music students are equally enriched through exposure to the literature of great composers and the staples of choral repertoire. The primary measure of the great choral music is its timelessness and its ability to convey so much to so many. 2. Musicianship Tone, Technique, Balance, & Blend: Proper technical skills relating to the correct usage of the vocal mechanism. Correct breath technique and release of tension achieved by all singers. A thorough understanding of correct vowel formation and the resultant mature tone quality. An open and uninhibited, yet controlled usage of the natural voice. Achievement of balance and blend in each ensemble. 3. A Sequential & Comprehensive Curriculum: The Core Ensembles: Chorale (CRL) Bella Voce (BV) Concert Choir (CC) The Auxiliary Ensembles Chamber Choir (CH) Men s Ensemble (ME) Satin Dolls (SD) Mixed Vocal Jazz (MVJ) 4. Superior & Professional Performances: An annual performance season that includes a Fall Choir Concert, a Holiday Choir Concert, a District Choral Festival, and a Spring Choir Concert. Participation in WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival. Participation in WSMA Large Group Contest Festival or a clinic festival/assessment. May Vocal Recitals. The consistent demonstration of professional performance practices and behavior by all students in rehearsals and at all public performances/events. 5. Pride & Tradition: Bella Voce singing Johnny Come for a Soldier and Concert Choir singing Danny Boy at the annual Spring Choir Concert. The Combined Choirs singing Fix You at the end of the annual Spring Choir Concert. Every Kimberly choral ensemble is a team where all members are valued and respected for their own unique contributions. Choir members have pride in what they do and expect the best from one another. Choir members care about and support one another; older students support younger students. Choir members value the opportunity to be with one another for an entire academic year and to represent themselves and their school in a positive and professional manner. 3

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC MISSION, GOALS, & PHILOSOPHY: KIMBERLY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT Music Department Mission Statement The purpose of the Music Department of the Kimberly Area School District is to provide quality music opportunities for all students through a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential music curriculum with defined content and achievement standards at all levels taught by qualified music teachers. KIMBERLY HIGH SCHOOL Music Department Philosophy The Kimberly High School Bands and Choirs will be active performance organizations that require dedication, proper attitude, self discipline and musical growth in order to achieve the highest standards of a successful program. Each student is expected to fulfill the necessary requirements to the best of his/her abilities. Student performers understand that giving anything less than their full potential is denying themselves, their peers, and their ensemble of complete success. KHS CHOIR OBJECTIVES: The students and the directors of the Kimberly High School Choirs will work cooperatively in order to achieve and promote musical excellence. Music has many unique qualities that make it a desirable medium of organized aesthetic education. People universally respond to music and can find satisfaction and meaning through experiencing it. Although abilities vary, every person can find enrichment and enjoyment not only as a consumer, but also as a producer of music. Therefore, the Kimberly High School Choirs will provide the following: A sequential and comprehensive music education experience to all interested students in order to promote lifelong musical learning. An environment that promotes aesthetic appreciation, expression, and creativity. An interdisciplinary approach to musical knowledge, skills, and abilities. Communication with parents and community members to keep them informed of program expectations and the importance of their involvement. Opportunities that generate student confidence and that help students to develop a positive self image. An awareness of music as a leisure activity and a life long skill. The Kimberly High School Choirs will: Contribute to a diverse and well rounded curriculum through high quality choral repertoire and instructional materials that represent a variety of styles, cultures, and historical eras. Help students to: o Understand the basic concepts of proper vocal production. o Improve individual proficiency in sight reading, music theory concepts, aural skills, and expressive/artistic performance practices. o Apply musical knowledge to repertoire that is being rehearsed and performed. Give students opportunities to participate in ensemble performances that allow them to practice performance etiquette and to understand the rewards of hard work. Maintain a standard of excellence in both performance and student behavior. Students in Kimberly High School Choirs will be able to: Develop a working framework of proper vocal production (mature/rich tone quality, correct intonation, crisp diction, and proper breath support) and the ability to listen with discrimination. Increase their own musical literacy by investigating and understanding the relationship between sound and symbol. Recognize musical elements and demonstrate expressive qualities in a variety of choral repertoire. Contribute to the blend, balance, and quality of an ensemble while developing the ability to sing a given vocal part independently. Gain confidence in performing by practicing performance etiquette, listening to, analyzing and describing music, and evaluating music performances. Develop self discipline by functioning as a responsible member of a choral organization. Recognize the unique values of singing, value music as a means of self expression, and perform for self enjoyment and for the enjoyment of others. 9 GENERAL EXPECTATIONS & CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: General expectations of all students in the Kimberly High School Choirs: (Specific policies and procedures can be found in the next section of this handbook.) When coming to rehearsal, be on time, be prepared, and bring a positive attitude. Begin working as soon as you come in the choir room and give 100% during each rehearsal. Treat the director, fellow students, your music, and the choir room with courtesy and respect. Accept responsibility for your behavior. Follow instructions and be on task. Leave extraneous conversation at the door and raise your hand if you have a question or comment. Observe prudent principles of vocal health and voice care, especially in the weeks prior to a concert. Only music students should be in music classrooms, practice rooms, and common spaces; practice rooms are for practicing, not for chatting and hanging out. Devote time outside rehearsal to learning and memorizing your music. Try your best all the time! Have fun! SPECIFIC POLICIES & PROCEDURES: Students will find that some of the rules in the Kimberly Choirs Handbook are similar to those in the Parent/Student Handbook. Everyone is here because they have something in common they enjoy singing! However, how each choir sounds has a great deal to do with how its members are able to work together. If students follow the class policies and procedures listed below every day of the year, the result will be choral ensembles that personify excellence! The following policies are in effect during ALL rehearsals and/or performances, both at school and when representing Kimberly High School off site: Obey all school rules. Treat the director, fellow students, your music, and the choir room with courtesy and respect. Do not play the piano without permission, touch any electronic equipment without permission, or write or erase anything on the whiteboard without permission. When you enter the choir room, immediately look at the projection screen. Please note the daily objectives, the materials that will be needed for the day, the schedule for the period, and any other important information. Then, please get your folder, find your spot on the risers, put your music in order, and begin work at the first activity (typically a sight reading activity). 8

Each day after warm ups we will do a sight reading activity. The exercise number will be posted on the PowerPoint. You are allowed to write on your music, but it must be in pencil! Be ready to start rehearsal as soon as the tone sounds! You will hear the fanfare (or spandex/panda ), which lets you know that we are ready to begin. Please do not talk while others are talking; conversation that disrupts the class is not productive. Take warm ups seriously. If you fail to warm up, you can risk causing serious damage to your singing voice. Remain in your spot at all times. If you need anything, please raise your hand and wait until you are called upon before talking. Sharpen your pencil before class begins and be sure that you have a pencil everyday! Students should mark their music with breath marks, dynamics, and articulation instructions as indicated by the director. This prevents unnecessary repetition and/or learning mistakes. A pencil sharpener is available for your use. Should you need to use it during the rehearsal, please do so with minimal interruption to the rehearsal. The Choir Council VP or a Representative will be asked to do random pencil checks. Any student who does not have a pencil readily available will lose honor points. No exceptions. Please observe proper posture during rehearsals. Music should be held high enough to make eye contact with the director, and yet, follow the notes and words easily. Be responsible for the music loaned to you and for returning your music folder to its proper spot. Do not roll, fold, tear, bend, draw on, or destroy the music or your folder in any way. If you do any of these things, you will be charged a full replacement fee. You will need to provide a 1 inch, black, 3 ring binder in which you will keep all music and materials needed for class. You are responsible for keeping track of and taking care of the folder and its contents. You are encouraged to take your folder home to rehearse but it MUST be in class every day. You will be assigned a folder slot to keep your folder in when you do not take it home. You are expected to put your folder away after each rehearsal. Failure to do so will result in loss of honor points. Again, no exceptions. No food is allowed in the rehearsal rooms (unless you have spoken with your director individually and need to eat lunch at the beginning/end of rehearsal). Also, no drinks (except plain water in its original container) should be brought into the choir room. Gum chewing is not allowed! It is expected that the classroom be left tidy each day. No one will be excused from class until all folders, water bottles, lunch trays, jackets etc. have been taken care of. The bell does not excuse you; you will be excused you when the room is in an acceptable condition. If for any reason the director or any Choir Council members have to spend any time cleaning up after class, you will be required to make up the amount of time wasted the next day. Upon returning to school after an absence, please ask your section leader(s) to inform you of any missed work, vocabulary, etc. If you have further questions, please ask your director after class, not during rehearsal. Bathroom trips should occur during passing time, not during rehearsal, unless it is an emergency. Cell phones should not be seen or heard during a rehearsal or a performance (even while in the audience)! 9

ATTENDANCE & ASSESSMENT: For students in the Kimberly Choirs, regular attendance and punctuality are essential for learning. Irregular attendance or tardiness not only diminishes a student s effectiveness, but also hinders the musical growth of a given ensemble. Attendance for students in the Kimberly Choirs will be taken at the beginning of each class and at all dress rehearsals and performances. The Kimberly High School attendance staff is responsible for determining whether a student absence is excused or unexcused if the absence occurs during the school day. Please refer to the Student & Parent Handbook for more information about excused and unexcused absences. KHS choral ensembles are best defined as both co curricular and performance based classes. With regard to these choirs being co curricular classes, it is required that students not only participate in class, but also in events outside of the regular school day (i.e. concerts). Relating to these choirs being performance based classes, a large portion of a student s grade will be based on his/her effort, involvement, and improvement in class. This also means that a large portion of a student s grade will be earned during class time. Student grades will be assigned according to the Kimberly High School grading scale: A+ 100% 97% C+ 79% 77% A 96% 93% C 76% 73% A 92% 90% D 72% 65% B+ 89% 87% F 64% and below B 86% 83% I Incomplete B 82% 80% A student s final grade is a combination of points earned in each of six categories: 1. PERFORMANCE 30% (PERF) CONCERTS: Concerts are a REQUIRED part of the Kimberly High School Choral Music Program! Concert performances are the most visible and most important aspect of the KHS Choir Program. It is vital that you take part. You will be excused from a required concert for serious illness or other circumstances if the director is notified before the performance. Requests to be excused for any other reason must be made via at least THREE WEEKS IN ADVANCE of the performance and will be considered by the director (and the administration, if necessary). If a student must miss a concert due to a reason that the director considers to be an excused absence, the director reserves the right to ask a student to complete an alternative assignment in order to earn the equivalent amount of points possible for that concert. Because performances serve as capstone experiences for all students in the Kimberly High School Choirs, it is necessary that students take concerts seriously. Each student can receive up to 100 points for each concert during the academic year. Students will lose points during a concert if they do not follow the Guidelines for Performers and Guidelines for Audience Members listed in the next section of this handbook. The following situations constitute an excused absence: A wedding or a funeral for a member of the student s family. Family observation of a religious holiday that falls on the day of a concert. An absence that has the pre approval of the Kimberly High School administrative staff. A court appearance or other legal procedure that requires a student s attendance. Serious illness. 10

A student who misses a concert due to an unexcused absence will receive 0 points for that concert and will not have an opportunity to make up the points. The following are not acceptable excuses for missing a concert and will be deemed unexcused absences: Forgetting to come to the concert. Not coming to a concert because the student does not have the proper performance attire. Not coming to a concert because the student does not have a ride. A family vacation (that was not pre approved by the Kimberly High School Attendance Office). Participation in any extra curricular activity; choir concerts are curricular commitments. Participation in another concert (at church or in the community). Having to work. In order to participate in a concert, a student must be present for classes on the day of the concert (if the concert takes place on a school day). Full credit for concert performances will be earned by: Arriving at the scheduled call time. Being dressed in proper concert attire. Checking out and checking in robe/uniform. Professional behavior backstage, on stage, and in audience. Facial and vocal energy during performance Demonstrating proper concert etiquette PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: REFLECTION QUESTIONS After all concerts, all students in Chorale, Bella Voce, and Concert Choir will answer a series of questions in order to evaluate their own performance, as well as that of their performance ensemble. Specific details of this assignment will be given to each student under separate cover after each concert. PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: ETIQUETTE After each concert, students will self assess their behavior and professionalism using a rubric. They will also assess the overall behavior and professionalism of their ensemble. PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT: SKILLS After each concert, students will use a rubric to self assess the skills and musicianship they displayed during the concert. They will also assess the overall skill level and musicianship of their ensemble. 2. EXAMS 20% (EXAM) SINGING TESTS/MEMORIZATION CHECKS: Approximately once each quarter, students will participate in a singing test/memorization check in small groups in order to assess their overall knowledge of the repertoire they are preparing for performance. Students will perform (a) small section(s) of the music being rehearsed. The director will evaluate the performance using a rubric. Skills that will be assessed include melodic and rhythmic accuracy, diction, tone quality, breath support, phrasing, memorization and preparedness, and overall musicianship. A more detailed explanation of expectations for these types of assessments will be given to students during class. SIGHT READING TESTS: Individual sight reading tests will be completed during lesson times once each quarter. 11

3. LESSONS 20% (LESS) LESSON ATTENDANCE & WEEKLY PROGRESS: Voice lessons are an essential part of any successful choral music program and they are required for all students in the KHS Choirs. Lessons are the fastest and most effective means by which one can realize his/her full potential as a singer! Generally, students will have one ten minute lesson each week (not including travel time). Students will be graded on each lesson using a rubric. This grade will include punctuality, preparation, and overall growth. A missed lesson can be made up for full credit if the reason for the absence is school related, such as a test or an absence from school. This make up lesson must be scheduled promptly and completed within one week of the missed lesson. Students will not be allowed to make up multiple lessons at the end of a quarter. If a missed lesson is unexcused, a student will have one week to make up that lesson and will only be able to earn a maximum of 10 points out of the possible 20 points. A second unexcused lesson during a given quarter will result in an automatic zero for that lesson. This applies to all regular lessons, Solo & Ensemble lessons, and lessons for Spring Vocal Recitals. In School Judging lessons and accompanist lessons prior to Solo & Ensemble Festivals cannot be made up. 4. ASSIGNMENTS 15% (ASGN) MUSIC THEORY ASSIGNMENTS/QUIZZES: Students in the Kimberly Choirs will study fundamental music theory concepts throughout the academic year. These concepts include, but are not limited to, music notation, rhythms, tempos, articulations, dynamics, and melodic/harmonic structure. Students will often be asked to complete short music theory assignments either in class or for homework. Occasional written quizzes will assess student mastery of the concepts presented in class. PRE CONCERT LISTENING / ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION ASSIGNMENTS: At least once each quarter, students will listen to performances of the same repertoire they are preparing for performance and will have the opportunity to critique, analyze, and describe that performance. They will also be asked to make connections to their own upcoming performance of that same music. SELECTED READING ASSIGNMENTS & ARTICLE REVIEWS: Approximately once each semester, students will be asked to read a short journal/research article relating to choral/vocal music, vocal production, vocal health, etc. They will then complete a short summary of the reading, answer a few questions, and offer insightful commentary about the article. An assignment prompt highlighting the specific components of this type of assignment will be given to students with each article. 5. PARTICIPATION/HONOR POINTS 10% (PTHR) PART RUBRICS (STUDENT/TEACHER): Once each quarter, students will use a rubric to self evaluate their participation in the areas of Rehearsal Preparation & Technique and Rehearsal Attitude & Effort. The director will evaluate those same two areas. Points from the student s self evaluation will be added to points from the director s evaluation. Rehearsal Preparation & Technique Student is prepared to rehearse. Student brings necessary materials to class and marks his/her score as necessary. Student is attentive and focused during rehearsal and does not distract or disturb others. Student actively participates in singing, written assignments, and group activities. Student practices/studies music outside of class. 12

Rehearsal Attitude & Effort Student is committed to helping his/her ensemble improve as a group. Student contributes to rehearsals and strives to improve and grow as a musician. Student is an effective team member and cooperates with others. Student consistently exhibits a positive attitude. Student respectful of the rehearsal process, the director, and other choir members. HONOR POINTS: Students have the opportunity to earn 5 points per week per quarter (typically 45 points each quarter). Points are deducted for any of the following: Tardiness Leaving materials out Not being prepared for class or not having a pencil or music in rehearsal Lack of effort in vocal production, facial energy, and breath energy Talking out of turn or interrupting rehearsal without raising hand 6. E POINTS 5% (EPTS) E-POINTS (Elective Points) are required for all KHS choir students. They are earned through participation in activities and/or events outside the classroom. E-Points are required for all KHS choir members each quarter Required number of E-Points per quarter: o Q1 = 20 (includes summer activities), Q2 = 15, Q3 = 15, Q4 = 15 Each student decides how s/he would like to earn E-Points each term E-Points align with Wisconsin's Model Academic Standards for Music: F (Analysis) - F.12.11: Students will listen to, describe, and analyze examples of a varied repertoire of music, representing diverse genres and cultures, by describing the uses of the elements of music and expressive devices. G (Evaluation) - G.12.7: Students will apply and refine specific criteria for making informed and critical evaluations of the quality and effectiveness of performances, compositions, arrangements, and improvisations and apply the criteria in their own participation in music. E Points can be earned in the following ways: Attend a musically substantive choral or musical theatre performance (5 points) Student must turn in the concert program and complete an online Community Performance Critique. Participate in a KHS musical (10 points) Participate in non KHS musical (5 points) Participate in non school piano or vocal lessons (1 point/lesson; max. 10 points/term) Written verification from a private studio teacher is required. 13

These should be activities that either further enhance your musical experiences and/or go above and beyond your usual contributions to the KHS Choirs. This may include, but is not limited to: o Concert set up and/or take down o Volunteering to tutor or provide extra help to an underclassman in preparation for Solo & Ensemble Festival o Accompanying an event at Solo & Ensemble Festival PERFORMANCE ETIQUETTE: Please adhere to the following guidelines in order to maintain and enhance the image of the Kimberly High School Choirs as superior performance ensembles: As a Performer: Students should arrive at the performance site in proper concert attire (looking clean and crisp) at the proper call time. Once you have arrived, go directly to the assigned room to unpack and warm up. Do not wander around the building where the concert is being held. No gum chewing or eating; drink water only. Display proper posture: head forward, shoulders rolled back (no slouching), arms/hands relaxed at the sides of the body, knees not locked, feet shoulder width apart with weight balanced evenly on the balls of the feet. Walk (please do not stomp) on the risers single file, in a quiet and orderly fashion. Do not giggle, laugh, or fool around on stage. Do not wave to anyone in the audience! Keep your eyes on the director, watch for dynamic changes, cut offs, the starting and stopping of each piece, etc. Maintain professionalism on stage, even if members of the audience are not behaving properly. 14

All concert participants must leave the performance site after the performance. Please make sure you have transportation to and from the performance venue. Teachers will wait with students until they are picked up. As an Audience Member: There should be no talking during the performance! A performance begins when the director takes the podium or walks on stage and ends when s/he steps away from the podium and leaves stage. Whispering is only permitted between musical selections and should be avoided, if possible. Applause should be the only form of giving approval for a performance; do not whistle, shout, or yell during a concert performance. Do not walk around while a piece is being performed, as it distracts the performers. If you need to excuse yourself during a performance, please sit near an exit; wait until the piece is finished to exit and re enter. Many of our performances will be recorded and what happens in the performance hall will be on the recording (this includes talking, coughing, laughing, crying, slamming doors, etc.). If there is a mistake, do not ridicule, laugh, point, or say anything; remember, everyone makes mistakes. Do not applaud until the director puts his arms down and turns toward the audience, as the piece may not be finished. As a participant or a member of the audience, try to be courteous by remaining for the entire concert. Leaving early can be very distracting to the performers. If you come in late, stand at the door until the current song is completed, then move to a seat. Please turn off (or turn to silent mode) all cellular phones, pagers, or any other noisy device. DO NOT TEXT during a performance! MUSIC, FOLDERS, & INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: A textbook is not required for any of the Kimberly High School choral ensembles. In every ensemble, each student will receive his/her own copies of music. This music is to be kept in a black 1 3 ring binder provided by the student at the beginning of the year. Only choir music is to be kept in this folder. Each student is assigned a numbered slot in a folder cabinet that corresponds to their folder number. If a student wishes to take his/her folder home, s/he may do so as long as s/he brings it back for the next rehearsal. The music in students choir folders is on loan to them. Some music that will be rehearsed and performed might not even belong to KHS. Therefore, all music and other instructional materials must be treated with the greatest respect. Do not deface your music! Do not doodle or draw in your music, your folder, or on any other instructional materials. Score markings should be made only in pencil. All students must have a pencil at every rehearsal! If a student loses and/or damages his/her music, then s/he will be required to pay a replacement charge for all the materials that were lost. The average cost for a piece of music is $2.50/copy. 15

SECTION LEADERS: Every choral ensemble will have several student leaders who assist the director by serving as section leaders. Section leaders are selected by the director based on their musicianship and leadership. These individuals are very important to the group and are directly responsible for the quality of their respective ensembles. Section Leader responsibilities include: distributing and collecting music leading sectional rehearsals making copies as needed helping individuals learn and perfect their music keeping students in their section on task during rehearsal making sure all equipment/music is put away daily encouraging students to grow musically through lessons and rehearsals CHOIR COUNCIL: The Choir Council aids the directors in the organization and management of the choirs. The purpose of the Kimberly High School Choir Council is to aid the directors in the organization and management of the choirs. The executive officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer), Representatives, and Uniform Manager are elected by all choir members. The Fundraising & Publicity Coordinator and Logistics & Travel Coordinator are appointed by the directors. Council members must be willing to give some extra time to the leadership of the choir program. Other choir members are expected to respect the authority of council members as appropriate to their duties assigned by the directors. President: The President serves as the main student leader of the KHS Choirs. He/she should set an example with a positive attitude and exceptional work ethic. The President will: Be in charge of rehearsals in Mr. Popke s absence. Lead warm ups and sectionals when called upon. Do the welcome at every choir concert. Write a quarterly blog post (for the KHS Choirs website) about what is happening in the KHS Choirs. Be available to support the secretary, treasurer, and representatives in their duties. Vice President: The Vice President will: Take Concert Choir attendance every day and keep track of tardiness. Collect and record folders that are left out after rehearsals. Assist the President in leading rehearsals when Mr. Popke is absent. Sometimes help to lead warm ups and sectionals. Be available to support the secretary, treasurer, and representatives in their duties. Secretary: The Secretary will: File and keep track of all sheet music. Help to organize music for Solo & Ensemble. Help Mr. Popke with copying and/or scanning music. Be responsible for collecting and recording all of the paperwork that is turned in throughout the year. 16

Treasurer: The Treasurer will: Be responsible for keeping track of all incoming payments and fundraising monies. Keep student accounts updated. Representatives: There will be 2 3 representatives for Concert Choir: One will be in charge of all the men s tuxedos. One in charge of women s dresses. If a third representative is elected, s/he will be in charge of costume rental for Solo & Ensemble music theater events. If a third representative is not elected, the other two representatives will share this job. There will be 2 3 representatives for Chorale and Bella Voce: Take Chorale/Bella Voce attendance every day and keep track of tardiness. Collect and record folders that are left out after rehearsals. Representatives in all ensembles will: Make sure all uniforms are labeled with a number and assigned to each student accurately. Take inventory at the end of the year to ensure all uniforms have been returned in proper condition. All Council Members: All members of the Council will: Assist with organizing awards at the end of the year Assist with year processes and procedures necessary to start and end each school year. PERFORANCE ATTIRE: What an audience member hears is greatly affected by what an audience member sees. Therefore, it is traditional and essential for performing ensembles to dress alike. While individuality is a positive thing, it should not be expressed in how choir members dress for a performance. The following describes the performance attire for each Kimberly High School choral ensemble: UNIFORM CARE AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: Perfumes or strong body sprays should not be used. Deodorant SHOULD be used! Earrings should be small and non reflective (no danglies or diamonds). Do not eat or drink while wearing your uniform (except water). Do not sit on any rough surfaces (ground, floor, brick surfaces). Pay special attention to the rough concrete block walls in the choir room and hallways. Be careful not to catch pieces of your uniform on handrails, hooks, etc. When the concert is completed, hang up your uniform with care in the correct numerical order. Report any problems with your uniform (zippers that do not work, etc.) to Mr. Popke. CHORALE: All students in Chorale are assigned a robe and stole which were purchased for approximately $125 each. Students will be fined the replacement value of any item damaged or not returned. Women need close toed black shoes with heels no higher than 1". Men need black dress pants, black socks, and black dress shoes. Robes will be checked out prior to the performance and checked back in immediately after the performance. Failure to do so will result in a loss of points. You are required to take care of these uniforms. If your uniform is lost or damaged, you will be responsible for the entire cost of replacement. 17

Students should wear dress clothes underneath their robes. We will maintain a professional demeanor, even when clothes are hidden by the robes! Dress clothes underneath the robes MUST include the following: Black dress pants (men); skin color nylons (women) Black socks (men) Black dress shoes (no tennis shoes or flip flops) CONCERT CHOIR, BELLA VOCE, & ALL AUXILIARY ENSEMBLES: Information about performance attire will be provided to students in these ensembles under separate cover. CHOIR LETTER: The Choir Letter is earned by obtaining a grade average of 95% or better for the school year. The quality of a choir member's participation in lessons, rehearsals, and extra activities is taken into account in each quarter's assignments. AWARDS: Several awards are given at the end of each academic year. The established awards are as follows: The KHS Choral Award: This is the most prestigious award that a singer can earn in choral music at Kimberly High School. It will always be given to a senior for his/her contribution to the total choral program. The primary criteria used in the selection process for this award are: Measurable accomplishments in choral music while at Kimberly Extra work done in the pursuit of individual musical growth Dedication to the betterment of the Kimberly Choirs The consistent demonstration of a positive attitude, leadership, and responsibility Director's Award: This award is given to an outstanding senior choir member who consistently excels in leadership, performance ability, attitude, and effort. Outstanding Vocal Musician Award: This award is given to a senior based upon total musicianship, commitment to outstanding performances, and leadership within the group. The Citizenship Award: The Citizenship Award is given to the student who may not always be in the spotlight, but who is always willing and happy to do his/her part as a member of the team. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated the willingness to spend time outside of class to help with the various jobs (moving risers and other equipment, setting up for concerts, etc.) This person will also have an excellent daily attendance record. Auxiliary Ensemble Scholarship: This scholarship is given to an outstanding senior participant in one or more of the auxiliary ensembles. They are selected on the basis of a written essay, the vote of the auxiliary ensembles, and the director's input. The money is made possible through the performance efforts of the choir. 18

PRIVATE VOICE LESSONS: Students should see Mr. Popke or Ms. Boots if they are interested in studying voice privately. Private lessons are highly encouraged and are a great way to improve your vocal technique and sight reading abilities! Mr. Popke or Ms. Boots can refer you to a number of highly skilled voice teachers in the Fox Cities area. Information is also available on the KHS Choirs website. MUSIC CAMPS: Summer music camps are fun and educational experiences that provide the opportunity to improve individual musicianship, meet new people with common interests, develop leadership skills, and encounter new perspectives. Information regarding these camps can be obtained from Mr. Popke and is also available on the KHS Choirs website. COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS: All students who are planning to attend college should see Mr. Popke or Ms. Boots about auditioning for music scholarships. Even if you do not plan on majoring in music, most colleges and universities will often give you money just to have you participate in their performing ensembles! All of these scholarships will require a prepared solo audition, as well as a recommendation from your director. Plan ahead, as the audition preparation process can take a considerable amount of time! Participating in music ensembles while in high school is the best strategy for obtaining these scholarships! FUNDRAISING: Each student has an individual fundraising account which is similar to a bank account. Students are provided ample opportunities to raise money for their individual accounts to help offset the expenses incurred for music department trips. After the senior year, any unused money will be placed into the general choir activity account (or placed in a sibling s account, if applicable). Students who drop choir forfeit their right to any money they may have in their account. No student is allowed to receive this money in the form of cash. In accordance with school policy, 20% of student profits earned through department fundraising will automatically go into the general choir activity account. Profits from group fundraisers, such as bake sales, car washes, etc., will go into the general choir activity account to be used for special presentations, group activities, transportation, refreshments, etc. COURSE FEE: All KHS music students are asked to pay a $5 course fee. Please contact Mr. Popke or Ms. Boots with any questions or concerns. SOLO & ENSEMBLE: This year, the District Solo & Ensemble Festival will be held on February 24, 2018 at Appleton North High School. Participation in this event is required for all choir students. The preparation process for this festival improves individual singing and technique more than any other one event. As individual singers become stronger, so do the choirs. Students will select music in the fall in order to allow sufficient time for learning 19
