This season marks my 16th year with this gifted group of musicians. The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra continues to grow in artistic excellence, and the dedication of each member is evident in the quality of this fine musical ensemble. This weekend s Holiday Pops concerts are Friday evening at Meydenbauer Theatre and Sunday afternoon at Eastlake Performing Arts Center. The Sunday performance features the Beaver Lake Middle School Choir, led by their Music Director, Tina Worthington. We welcome them back for their third Holiday Pops collaboration with the orchestra. The Sammamish Symphony s 2014/2015 season is an eventful one, highlighted by orchestral masterworks and outstanding soloists. We are once again presenting each of our regular concerts at two locations. Our audiences can attend any of these concerts at the Theatre at Meydenbauer R. Joseph Scott Center in Bellevue (Friday or Thursday evenings) or at Eastlake Performing Arts Center (Sunday afternoons). Performing at Meydenbauer continues our efforts to enlarge our audience and become better known throughout the Eastside. The Cantaré Vocal Ensemble has again invited the Sammamish Symphony to take part in a special appearance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. On Sunday, April 19, 2015, we will perform Carl Orff s Carmina Burana, with several area choral groups. It is a spectacular piece, employing enormous forces in an hour plus long celebration. I am honored to be asked to conduct this exciting work again, as well as a solo performance by the Symphony of selections from Jules Massenet s Le Cid Ballet Suite. This will be our sixth collaboration at Benaroya with Cantaré. February s España theme features Maurice Ravel s climactic showpiece Boléro and classical guitarist Michael Partington in Joaquín Rodrigo s Concierto de Aranjuez. Our season wraps up in June with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky s Fourth Symphony a masterpiece by turns somber, lyrical, colorful, and powerful. That concert also highlights our Youth Concerto Competition Winner. Now, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the concert! R. Joseph Scott R. Joseph Scott Music Director and Conductor, R. 6 Featured Guest The Beaver Lake Middle School Choir A Note from the Beaver Lake Middle School Tina Worthington, Choir Director The Beaver Lake Middle School Choir is a combined choir of 7th and 8th grade girls and 6th, 7th and 8th grade boys. The Choir has already performed a Fall Concert this school year and will also be performing at Seattle Center s Winterfest on December 15. In addition, the Choir will perform at several concerts and assemblies throughout the remainder of the school year, including the Plateau Festival with the Skyline High School Chorus in February, the Eastshore League Large Group Festival in April, and in a trip to Disneyland in March. This is the third time that the Choir has performed with the Sammamish Symphony and we are super excited to be part of this special holiday event. We will do our best to share our gift of music as we do when we sing for our audiences throughout the year! The Sammamish Symphony would like to thank Gordon Brown and the Gordon Brown Foundation for the generous contribution for music to build the Symphony s library. Gordon has been an active member and contra-bassoon player with the symphony for many years. 6

7 Dan Goeller, arranger A Christmas Festival of Carols As a holiday Pops arranger, Dan Goeller applies his forte for integrating traditional tunes into different classical music styles. Besides his many stylistically diverse arrangements, compositions, and orchestrations, Goeller has also worked on numerous recordings and several tours with artists including Amy Grant, CeCe Williams, and Nickel Creek. A Christmas Festival of Carols features a medley of familiar carols presented in a variety of classical styles. The featured songs are Hark the Herald Angels Sing, How Great Our Joy, I Saw Three Ships, It Came Upon a Midnight Clear, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, O Come, Little Children, and Angels We Have Heard on High. Bill Holcombe, arranger Festive Sounds of Hanukah A renaissance musician instrumentalist (clarinet and saxophone), arranger, composer, conductor, and music publisher Wilford Bill Holcombe by the 1970s had become one of America s most published arrangers for concert band and orchestra. His Festive Sounds of Hanukah celebrates with traditional songs the Jewish holiday, which marks the rededication of the Temple Program Notes in Jerusalem after its desecration by the forces of the Seleucid Empire and commemorates the miracle of the container of oil in which a singleday s supply of consecrated oil fueled the eternal flame in the Temple for eight days, the length of time it took to prepare and consecrate fresh oil. Brian Balmages Fantasia on We Three Kings An active composer, conductor, producer, and performer, Brian Balmages is currently Director of Instrumental Publications for FJH Music. His compositional ideas have resulted in high demand for his wind, brass, and orchestral music, including commissions and premieres by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Miami Symphony Orchestra, University of Miami Wind Ensemble, and Boston Brass. Fantasia on We Three Kings is a feature-length concert work that weaves modern, original material around the familiar carol in a gamut of textures and emotions, from the impressionistic opening to the dramatic conclusion. Paul O Neill/Robert Kinkel Wizards in Winter Founded in 1996 by producer, composer, and lyricist Paul O Neill, The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is known for its elaborate concerts, which include, according to Mobile Production Monthly, enough pyro to be seen from the international space station. Its musical style incorporates progressive rock, symphonic metal, and heavy metal, with influences from classical music. Both Billboard Magazine and Pollstar have ranked them as one of the top ten ticketselling bands in the first decade of the new millennium. Wizards in Winter is an instrumental track by O Neill and keyboardist/co-producer Robert Kinkel released on the band s 2004 album The Lost Christmas Eve and is often used to open their live shows. Alfred Reed Russian Christmas Music One of America s most prolific and frequently performed composers, Alfred Reed wrote more than two hundred works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus, and chamber ensembles. He also traveled extensively as a guest conductor, performing in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Russian Christmas Music, written to convey the sounds of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music, was first performed as part of a December 1944 concert, nationally broadcast over NBC radio, designed to improve wartime Soviet- American relations. The work consists of one movement, divided into four sections: the opening Carol of the The Sammamish Symphony Orchestra is grateful for the generous support of the Garneau-Nicon Family Foundation. 7

8 Little Russian Children, based on a 16th century Russian Christmas carol; the Antiphonal Chant, introduced by the brass section; the Village Song, a gentle section featuring English Horn; and the final Cathedral Chorus, which concludes the piece with a thundering chorale. In our Sunday afternoon concert, the Sammamish Symphony is honored and delighted to present the students of the Beaver Lake Middle School Choir and their musical director Tina Worthington in three holidayspirited numbers. Mark Hayes, arranger Jingle Bells (Sunday only) Written by James Lord Pierpont and published under the title One Horse Open Sleigh in 1857, Jingle Bells was originally written for Thanksgiving. It is now, of course, the most frequently heard tune of the holiday season. Award-winning concert pianist, composer, conductor, and arranger Mark Hayes based his arrangement on an adaptation entitled Jingle Bells? by Jack Gold and Marty Paich featured on Barbra Streisand s 1967 recording A Christmas Album. The album is one of Streisand s best-selling albums and is ranked as one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all time. Irving Berlin White Christmas (Sunday only) During his 60-year career, Irving Berlin wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including the scores for 19 Broadway shows and 18 Hollywood films. He was known for writing music and lyrics in the American vernacular, with his aim being to reach the heart of the average American. White Christmas had its first public performance on a radio show, sung by Bing Crosby on Christmas Day Crosby s first recording of the song had disappointing sales in its first few weeks, but quickly bounded to the top of the charts. Researchers from the Guinness book of records have estimated (there are no reliable sales figures from back then) that Crosby s version has sold in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. John Higgins, arranger Christmas on Broadway (Sunday only) Christmas on Broadway, arranged by John Higgins Managing Producer/ Editor for Hal Leonard Corporation presents choral numbers from some of Broadway s best-known holiday shows, including It s Beginning To Look Like Christmas, Pine Cones and Holly Berries, Toyland, March Of The Toys, My Favorite Things, We Need A Little Christmas, and God Bless Us Everyone. Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard The Polar Express, Concert Suite So much hype was generated about the super-realistic animated characters that many reviews of Robert Zemeckis The Polar Express ignored the fact that the 2004 film was a musical. Zemeckis usual musical collaborator, Alan Silvestri, teamed up with Glen Ballard to create five original songs for the movie. Upon the arrival of the awards season, Silvestri and Ballard received the bulk of the recognition aimed at The Polar Express, with their Josh Groban-performed song Believe Become a part of our organization! 9 receiving a Grammy Award along with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Arthur Harris, arranger Good King Wenceslas Arthur Harris, arranger The First Nowell Musician and arranger Arthur Harris created many arrangements of orchestral and choral music, known for their thick and rich textures, with many inner voices and counter-melodies. His orchestrations of Christmas carols include the acclaimed series that was prepared for Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1950s and subsequently recorded for Columbia Records. The legend of Good King Wenceslas is based on the life of Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia, braving harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephan (the day after Christmas). English hymn writer John Mason Neale wrote the lyrics in 1853 set to a tune based on a 13th-century spring carol. The First Nowell is a traditional classical English carol, most likely from the 18th century. The melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of one musical phrase repeated twice, followed by a refrain which is a variation on that phrase, all three phrases ending on the third of the scale. 10 works professionally both as a programming manager and as a musician. As holiday shopping sneaks into Halloween, there is some basis for spooky-sounding Christmas tunes a la Nightmare Before Christmas. Minor Alterations No. 2: Carols from the Dark Side presents a medley of favorite Christmas tunes, transposed from major to minor keys, then disguised, layered, and morphed even more. Mel Tormé/Robert Wells The Christmas Song (Friday only) The Christmas Song (commonly subtitled Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire or, as it was originally subtitled, Merry Christmas to You ) was written during a sweltering stretch of summer in 1944 in an effort to stay cool by thinking cool. According to Mel Tormé, he was inspired by a few lines he saw jotted down by his friend and lyricist Bob Wells: Bob didn t think he was writing a song lyric. He said he thought if he could immerse himself in winter he could cool off. Forty minutes later that song was written. Nat King Cole did four different best-selling recordings of the piece between 1946 and A smooth jazz vocal stylist himself (nicknamed The Velvet Fog ), Tormé s own recordings of his song didn t sell nearly as well. However, Tormé recognized the value of owning the publishing rights, occasionally referring to the song as his annuity. Robert W. Smith Jingle Bells Forever As head of the Music Industry program at Troy (Alabama) State University, Robert W. Smith brings a successful history to his teaching in music composition, production, and publishing. He has over 700 published works, including three symphonies, and as a conductor and clinician, has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe and Australia. Jingle Bells Forever fuses America s favorite Christmas melody with America s favorite Sousa march, and throws in a bit of show biz. Smith has arranged the piece for various ensembles, including a version recorded by the Boston Brass in their 2006 Christmas Bells Are Swingin! album Sammamish Symphony Association Cascade Woman s Club Living the Volunteer Spirit The GFWC Cascade Woman's Club is a non-profit charitable organization bringing together women from surrounding areas to promote community service and welfare locally, regionally and internationally.
