2 Paulding Exempted Village Schools Bands 405 North Water Street, Paulding, Ohio ext Dear Middle School Band Members and Families, Welcome to the start of another great year for the Paulding Bands. I am looking forward to a great year and I hope that you are as well. The philosophy of the Paulding Band Program is to provide an opportunity for all interested students to express themselves through the art of making music while attempting to instill a sense of appreciation for the art form of instrumental music performance. In addition, we hope that through their experience in the Paulding band program, they will become life-long learners of the art of music and develop the necessary skills for a comprehensive musical experience. When you sign up for the band program, you are signing up for all of the experiences that the class can offer as well as the expectations. This includes homework in the form of practicing regularly, active participation in class daily, and attendance during concerts just to name a few. The band program is a team, and in many cases a family activity. Each student s participation is crucial to the overall success of each performing ensemble. BASIC CLASS EXPECTATIONS Come to class prepared with instrument, music, music book, and pencil each day Be respectful to each other and the director Be in seat and ready to start on time when the director starts class All instruments will be stored in band lockers NOT ON THE FLOOR NO ONE PLAYS ANYONE ELSE S INSTRUMENT (INCLUDING THE SCHOOL PERCUSSION) All music is to be stored in band folder and in appropriate slots All sounds that are made should be made with musical purpose No other work or activity is to be done during band time unless permission is given Music supplies will be sold prior to the start of class ONLY - make sure you have extras in case you need something during class. 4 BASIC GRADING POLICY 5 points per day - (3 pts for having instrument & supplies, 1 pt for having music book/sheet music, 1 pt for having a sharpened pencil and folder ready to use at each rehearsal) Students are expected to play in class on a daily basis. Any student who is unable to play in class due to personal illness is expected to bring in a note from their parent stating their expected return to the ensemble. A note is also required for all instrument repairs. Performances (Concerts) - Points 100 Students are expected to be dressed for the concert in the required concert dress. Students not dressed correctly will lose points off this portion of the grade. In addition, Students are expected to remain until the end of the concert for that evening. This promotes an atmosphere of support and esprit de corps for each performing ensemble. A form may be required to turn in at the conclusion of the concert. Any students that are disruptive to any portion of the concert will have points deducted from their overall concert grade. Playing / written exams - points TBD This might include scale tests or passages from music currently be rehearsed. You will be asked to play individually. This is not meant to embarrass anyone and you will not lose points for nervousness. LOCKERS We know that purchasing/renting and instrument requires a great deal of financial and personal investment. It is our goal to help you protect that investment as much as possible. To assist, every student will be issued a locker in the band area for keeping their instrument. NO INSTRUMENTS are to be left on the floors in the band room or the instrument storage room. IF A STUDENT WISHES THE ADDED PROTECTION OF LOCKING THAT LOCKER WITH A LOCK, THEY MAY BRING THEIR OWN LOCK TO PLACE ON THE LOCKER. THESE MUST BE COMBINATION LOCKS AND THE COMBINATION MUST BE GIVEN TO MR. SANDWISCH. If you do not have a personal lock, locks can be rented from the band department for $2. Please note that any instrument that is in a locker and does not have a lock on it is at risk for a security issue. The school and the band department cannot be held responsible for items damaged / stolen in an unlocked locker. This includes instruments that are rented from the school. PLEASE consider either providing your own lock or renting one from the band department. INSTRUMENT RENTALS - ($45 rental fee for this year) BRASS & WOODWINDS If you need an instrument, there is a VERY LIMITED supply of school owned instruments available for rental. Please note that these instruments are not in as good a shape, either cosmetically or physically, as a new or gently used instrument. Students are encouraged to explore the possibility of renting/purchasing a new or used instrument from a reputable specialized music dealer. Remember, do not buy an instrument the same place you can get your car fixed. If one is available and you will be renting from the school the cost for the school year is $45. You will be issued a rental form with more information. All Repairs are your responsibility.
5 PERCUSSION ($20 yearly maintenance fee) Unlike the other instruments that are issued to a single user and in use by a single person during one period of the day, the school owned percussion are in use by every class all day long. As you can imagine, the wear on tear on these items can be quite substantial and with almost $50,000 worth of equipment to maintain, it is simply not possible to keep up with the repair costs. Since so many students use these items, we are asking all percussionists (grades 6-12) to pay a $20 fee to be used for the maintenance / repair of the school percussion. You will receive a rental form at the beginning of the year. Please contact me if there is an issue. MUSIC BOOKS / SUPPLIES / REPAIRS There are several reputable music stores in the area which you can purchase / rent instruments and get necessary supplies. You are encouraged to ask Mr. Sandwisch if you are uncertain where to go. Do not get taken by poor repairs and less than good quality instruments and supplies. We know that funds are tight and we want to help you get the most for your hard earned dollars. RETTIG MUSIC We are very fortunate that once a week we have a representative from Rettig Music in Defiance come to our school to pick up and drop off repairs and purchases. If you have a repair that needs to get to the shop you can leave it with Mr. Sandwisch and he will see that it gets picked up and taken to the store for repair. They will call you with an estimate and you can then authorize and pay for the repair over the phone. Once the repair is completed, they will even deliver it back to the school. In addition, if it is easier for you, you may go online to and order ANY items directly from them as well as pay online. Those items will be delivered once a week with our regular delivery / pick up schedule. This is a great service and again may save you time and gas. We keep only an emergency amount of supplies on hand. If we have them, the supplies are available for sale AT THE BEGINNING of class periods and ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY AT THAT TIME. THERE ARE NO CREDIT EXTENSIONS. Please plan ahead with the purchase of extra reeds etc. so that if class has begun and you need something, you can have access to it right away. Points will be deducted from your daily grade if you are not prepared for class with a working instrument (including all necessary items to make your instrument work) and that could have been prevented. REPAIRS We ask that all necessary instrument repairs be handled by the experts. They have the right tools to do the right job and that will actually help keep the cost down. I have seen simple repair costs the could have been done for as little as $75 end up costing as much as $600 because of a home repair that went bad. A bad repair can render an instrument unplayable and need complete replacement if you are not experienced in the proper technique of instrument repair. ALL UNPAID FEES (RENTAL, MAINTENANCE, SUPPLIES, ETC.) WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR CHILD S SCHOOL FEES. THIS MAY AFFECT THEIR PARTICIPATION IN VARIOUS SCHOOL FUNCTIONS INCLUDING SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, SPORTS, and GRADUATIONS. THIS WILL REMAIN PART OF THEIR FEES UNTIL IT IS PAID REGARDLESS OF WHEN IS WAS ADDED.
