1 Southern River College Music Focus Program 2016 A handbook for music students and their parents.
2 Overview Welcome to Music at Southern River College Students entering the Music Program at Southern River College will have either: a) already been accepted into the School of Instrumental Music (SIM) program in primary school and have chosen to continue with this in Year 7-10 or b) completed a successful music audition with the Music Teacher at Southern River College and may then begin SIM instrumental or vocal lessons in Year 7 (dependent on places available) or c) been undertaking private lessons and have completed a successful music audition with the Music Teacher at Southern River College and have agreed to keep on with weekly private lessons with a suitable private music teacher. Instrumental/Vocal Program In 2016 instruments studied in the SIM Program at Southern River College are: Contemporary Voice, Woodwind (flute, clarinet & saxophone), Guitar (classical, acoustic & electric guitar) Electric Bass, Drum Kit/Percussion, Brass (trumpet & trombone. Ensemble/Band Program All students selected to be part of the Music at Southern River College need to perform in an ensemble group on their school based instrument. Attendance and participation in a Southern River College ensemble is expected for all music students. This includes all rehearsals and performances throughout the year. In Years 7-10 ensemble participation will contribute 10% of a students overall assessment in music. In Years ensemble participation contributes an essential part of senior students assessment in the Certificate III in Music Ensembles run at Southern River College in 2016 include: Choir Guitar Ensemble Concert Band Jazz Band Rock Band 1 Rock Band 2 Djembe/Percussion Ensemble

4 Expectations of Music Students Southern River College is developing a strong profile because of its growing music program, and it is only possible to maintain this standard if all students are committed to the program. Attendance at rehearsals, lessons and concerts is mandatory and a positive attitude towards regular practice and attendance in the ensemble program. It is the standard and excellent reputation of the program that attracts students to the music program and we strive to maintain this. Time Commitment for Students Involvement in the program necessitates a commitment of time, however, it has been carefully structured so that it is possible for students to maintain balanced lives at home and at school. Students will typically be involved in one or two weekly instrumental and or vocal ensemble rehearsals. These may be before or after school. Staff request that a note or is sent to the teacher or ensemble director if a lesson or a rehearsal is missed. Where possible an apology in advance is helpful to teachers and conductors. Dentist/orthodontist etc appointments should not be made during ensemble times if it can be avoided. Attendance at lessons and ensemble rehearsals is very important. They usually occur only once a week and missing one means a whole week of learning is lost which, in turn also affects the other members of the ensemble.
5 Yr 7-10 Classroom Music (2 x lessons a week) Music - What is involved and how does it all work? The Music Program at Southern River College is made up of three distinct but highly integrated parts: Classroom Music Program SIM Instrumental & Vocal lessons Ensemble/Band Program (75% of Overall Assessment) (15% of Overall Assessment) (10% of Overall Assessment) Each of these three areas of study support learning skills and understanding concepts in each of the other two. Because they are linked so strongly to each other it is very important for music students to have access to and participate in all three areas. Classroom Music (2 x lessons a week) SIM Instrumental Lessons (Approx $1,200 of lessons annually) Ensembles & Bands (Weekly rehearsals before or after school & performances) Classroom Music Year 7-10 School Of Instrumental Music (SIM) lessons Ensemble/Band performance Students participate in classroom music activities including theory & aural skills, listening, analysis, music technology, piano/keyboard skills, composition and performance. Students need to keep and maintain a clear display folder comprised of all their worksheets, homework and assessments in neat organized file. Small group instrumental/vocal lessons. Students receive one lesson per week on a rotating timetable. There is a strong emphasis in music at Southern River College on practical/performance based learning. Students will also receive a separate SIM Teacher report each semester. Includes ensemble participation in class, before/after-school ensemble rehearsals and public performances each semester. Yr7 voice students all begin choir in Term 1. Yr 7 instrumental students usually join their ensemble in Term 2 or when their teacher judges their performance skills have reached the required level for their ensemble.
6 Year 11/12 Certificate III in Music The Certificate III in Music course is structured over two years with four timetabled periods per week, plus ensemble rehearsals before and after school as organized and specific to each student. as well as performances at concerts and other events. Students enrolling in music will be undertaking nationally recognized qualifications that can lead to a variety of other related music industry courses and/or future employment in the Music Industry Within this two-year course, students will need to complete 11 units to gain their Certificate III. All students must maintain a comprehensive lever-arch evidence file holding all evidence of assessments and classroom activities. This file will be moderated externally at the end of the year. As with all VET courses, all assessment is either pass/fail that is, competent or not yet competent ; Certificates are not awarded unless all assessments are deemed competent and all evidence provided. School of Instrumental Music Lessons and Ensembles/Bands Expectations: All music students are expected to do regular practice on their instrument on at least 5/6 days a week, for a minimum of 30 minutes. Students are also expected to perform in one or more the relevant school ensembles. The ensembles will perform publicly on several occasions during the year and individual students also perform every term/semester as part of their class time. Beginner instrumental students in year will graduate to join an ensemble once their skills have reached an appropriate level. This usually occurs by second term or by second semester. Voice students are involved in the choir all year rehearsals occur before school on Wednesdays from 7:45 8:30am Practice Record Journal (All SIM Students) Students who are in the SIM program are issued with a Practice Record Journal. This has proven to be an excellent tool for tracking a student s progress. It must be taken to all instrumental lessons. The journal s purpose is: (i) (ii) (iii) for recording practice times to record the practice homework given each week for communication between the parent and the instrumental teacher. It is important that the journal is filled in and signed by the parent and the teacher each week. This helps keep students organised and also enhances progress and motivation levels.
7 Important! Procedure for leaving timetabled classes to attend SIM music lessons How does a student get permission to leave their normal school classes (timetabled on grid) to go to their weekly instrumental or vocal lesson? Music lesson timetables are ed to all staff at Southern River College (including administration and student services staff.) This is to help students avoid being marked absent when they go to their music lesson. Students are each given a copy of their SIM Lessons timetable and have been asked to glue/staple it into the back of their School Diary. Students must show their diary to their teachers at the start of class to let them know they have a music lesson during their class. When a music lesson starts midway or overlaps between regular classes, music students are expected to show their diary when returning midway into their next class. A SIM lesson attendance slip will be signed by the teacher and given after every lesson which students then deliver to Student Services and quickly return to class Extra SIM Instrumental/Vocal Timetables are available to take home upon request - a good idea is to have an extra copy in a prominent place the home (e.g.: the fridge or bedroom door.) Ensembles/bands and Rehearsal Days & Times 2016 Concert Band: Rehearses every Monday after school 3pm - 4 pm (Directed by Mr. Craig Wallace- Gibb) A mixed instrumental ensemble involving Yr7-12 on flute, clarinet, saxophone, brass, drums, keyboard and bass. Year 7 s will join when skill levels enable participation usually by term 2. Guitar Ensemble: Rehearses every Thursday 3pm 4pm. Involves guitarists and bass players in Yr7-12. Contemporary styles focus. Yr7 s will join when skill levels enable participation usually by term 2 (Directed by Mr Ian Campbell) Jazz Band: Rehearses 7:30am 8:30am every Tuesday before school. Focus on learning jazz styles, improvisation and performing tunes by memory (Directed by Mr Wallace-Gibb) Choir: Rehearses every Wednesday 7:45am 8:30am Contemporary styles focus. Involves all voice students in the SIM Voice program Yr7-12. (Directed by Ms. Liyana Yusof). Rock Band 1: Rehearses every Thursday before school 7:45am 8:30am Involves selected students from lower school (Directed by Mr Ian Campbell) Rock Band 2: Rehearses before school on Fridays. 7:45am 8:30am Involves selected students from lower school (Directed by Mr Craig Wallace-Gibb). Djembe Percussion Ensemble: A based West African ensemble for our percussions students. (Directed by Mr Chris Booth)
8 How you can help your child s Music Program P&C Music Committee 2016 We are looking for Parents to join our Music Committee. Our group usually meets only 1-2 times a term on Wednesday evenings in the staffroom for 45min - 1hr It is set up as a branch of the Southern River College P & C Its purpose is primarily for: i) Fundraising for new audio equipment/instruments new technologies, workshops excursions and incursions. ii) Assistance at school concerts (eg: managing supper, bbq s & raffles). Your involvement and support of your childs music education is welcomed and greatly appreciated.
