2 gil evans series (1958) Background: In late 1996, I was one o the i rst to examine the contents o three boxes o music that had been in storage in a acility rented by Miles Davis. All o the Gil Evans scores or Davis s Columbia albums were there, as well as extracted arts used at the recording sessions. Several o these scores had been transcribed or various rojects and concerts over the years beore the discovery o these boxes, in articular or a concert in honor o Evans himsel. When these original scores are comared against the transcritions, one sees immediately the utility o the even attemting to transcribe Gil s music, as he ools the ear reeatedly. It is an honor and leasure to make available these classic scores or study and erormance in edited editions. The Music: Summertime, o course, comes rom Porgy and Bess, and that album is a deserved classic. Evans s arrangement centers around a reeated line or ri, which changes color and texture throughout as Davis imrovises over it. Evans would later adat this arrangement or an album with Helen Merrill, and that erormance included a guest aearance by sorano saxohonist Steve Lacy. The arrangement or Davis has two searate introductions layed one ater another at the beginning. These were cut or the recording, but are included here or their historical value. Playing or not laying them in erormance is o course let to the discretion o the conductor. The bass layer should be advised to lay the written notes and imrovise a walking line where there are slashes. Notes to the Conductor: This is a airly straightorward setting o the classic Gershwin song. Dynamics in all o Evans s music is o rime imortance. Minimal miking o the l utes is recommended so that they can be heard, but they must not be louder than the brass. As has been discussed in other Jazz Lines Publications, the original arts or the Porgy and Bess album are or our reed layers, one o which is an alto sax, the remainder doubling on reeds o all sizes and tyes. Clearly Evans wanted the sound o a brass orchestra with woodwinds as color and acoustic suort; he did not conceive these settings or live erormance. In the studio, the instrumental balance was worked out so that the reeds sounded as Gil wished. For live erormances, some amlii cation is needed so that the clarinet and bass clarinets are heard.
