We are very grateful to everyone involved.

4 2 Introduction We are delighted to introduce the syllabus for the 48 th Woodley Festival. Once again most of the Festival will be held at Woodley Town Council s excellent Oakwood Centre. We aim to provide high quality performances for your enjoyment and are very selective in our choice of professional adjudicators, venues and other facilities. In addition to being an enjoyable artistic success, the 2017 Festival saw some 7,150 visitors including 2,400 performers and 1,064 performances. We strive to create a warm and friendly environment, with the emphasis being on the enjoyment of performance and the appreciation of others efforts all in the presence of professional adjudicators and a supportive audience. A small Finale Concert will be held at the Oakwood Centre during the evening of Sunday 18th March. 8 6 Speech & Drama Section Ann Bauer Ann has spent her working life in education teaching in secondary and primary schools, theatres, university and therapy teams, as well as examining drama and theatre studies. Ann ran her own drama school for many years, and has worked in mainstream education as a drama and English teacher, a SENCO and specialist teacher for pupils with SEN. Ann trained to teach under John Hodgson at Bretton Hall, his major influence was the importance of improvisation. Ann continues to be an enthusiastic teacher of improvisation for developing all performance skills. She believes strongly in the inclusive power of drama, that it offers confidence building, team work, and the discipline of controlling body, voice and nerves. Combining that with her love of the written word, her first degree was English; she counts herself lucky to spend her life talking about what she loves. Currently Ann combines her teaching with doctoral research into teaching maths to young people with complex special needs. She is also an adjudicator for The British and International Federation of Festivals. Drama skills are never far away in her strategies whichever subject she is teaching. In her spare time Ann still attends ballet and tap classes, a lifelong passion, and enjoys theatre going and precious time with her family.

9 Speech & Drama Section Dr Anita Downey PhD, PGCE, ADVS,LGSM, FVCM, PGCA 7 Anita began her career as an academic studying at Oxford and Nottingham Universities. After qualifying as a teacher she worked in both Primary and Secondary schools. She happily combined her academic teaching with her love of the arts. She trained as a Drama Teacher at Guildhall School of Speech and Drama and Central School of Speech & Drama. Pioneering the integration scheme for Surrey and also working with profoundly deaf youngsters, she then set up a Creative Arts Programme for them. Winning the International Professor Van Lawrence Award for her research in to voice sounds, led her to research further for her PhD, The Cultural Rhythms of the World. This has led to her working with such diverse disciplines as Formula 1, Opera, the Stock Exchange and with International Speakers. Currently, Anita is a busy teacher of Drama at a large Secondary school. At home she teaches English, Maths and Physics and believes that being a polymath is a great advantage; the variety of work one can engage in shows how important it is to communicate in all aspects of life. Her own recreation is learning Japanese and keeping abreast of astrophysics which has always been a fascination. Anita is a member of STSD (The Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama) and an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals.

The performance MUST BE suitable for family entertainment. This is a non-competitive class and is open to those who wish to experience a festival but not in a competitive way. The Adjudicator will give feedback on the performance but no marks, medals or trophies will be awarded. VERSE SPEAKING Guidance notes:- Traditionally all verse speaking should be performed without movement. The vocal and facial expressions of the speaker/s should make the poet s message clear. Movements are particularly distracting if they are used to explain the meaning of words, for example the child pointing to him/herself when saying me or I. Some adjudicators will accept a little movement, perhaps for occasional comic or dramatic effect, but others will not. As a rule of thumb close your eyes and listen, does the poem make sense and have impact by sound alone? If it does then you might choose to break the rules with a well-chosen movement in choral speaking or with younger verse speakers, even then be prepared to accept that some adjudicators will prefer no movement. 18 16 3 MINUTE NEWS UPDATE REPORT - SOLO CLASS Performance of a three minute news update similar to the quick news updates on the television. The Adjudicator will be looking for a brief overview of the news for that day. No crossover broadcasting is acceptable and the report should be based on a news review in the last month. For this class try and communicate the essence of the news update effectively, captivating your audience. Visual Aids should not be used in this class. Remember that news stories are presented in many different ways; make sure the style you use is relevant to the events you are reporting on. i.e. if reporting the weather you may wish to use a chart. 19 17 CHORAL VERSE SPEAKING In choral speaking the arrangement of the choir can make a difference. Think about the shape the group can make to enhance the title. Also think about your range of voices and arrange the different pitches of voices in groups, as in a singing choir, this can give you flexibility when sharing lines. 23 21 MUSICAL THEATRE In 2017 we introduced the Musical Theatre Classes for two age groups. Following its success we are introducing it across five age groups as detailed in the 2018 syllabus. Musical Theatre supports the growing trend for development of the triple threat performer (drama, song, movement). Our musical theatre section will focus on performance of 2 of these three disciplines namely drama and song. Performers will present a monologue and song in character of equal length. Staging and movement are allowed for the monologue with ONLY simple gestures for the song. Performers can sing their song a cappella, with live music or a backing track ensuring that this does not have any other singing on it. Monologues can be taken from a script, musical or be devised so long as they are performed in role. If devised the piece MUST reflect the chosen musical s plot, character and situation and is an extension of original text but with more detail mirroring the character and their circumstances. 28 26 Pianoforte Section Adjudicator Anthony Williams Anthony was born in Rochford, Essex and studied at the Royal Academy of Music with Alexander Kelly. Following success in several international competitions he has gone on to give recitals, broadcasts and concerto appearances around the world. He is also an experienced accompanist, performing with soloists such as Peter Cropper and Ann Murray. As a piano teacher Anthony has established an international reputation, his pupils achieving notable competition success (including a concerto finalist in the BBC Young Musician) and many going on to become professional musicians. Having taught at the Royal Academy of Music and Reading University Anthony is now based full-time at Radley College as Head of Keyboard and Instrumental Studies combining this with a busy freelance career. Anthony has written numerous articles and books on piano teaching and regularly presents lecture-recitals and seminars on performance, repertoire and the art of teaching, most recently to teachers and students in SE Asia and China as well throughout the UK, including the RCM. Anthony is an Associated Board Examiner (both jazz and classical), Trainer and Senior Moderator, a Piano Mentor on the CT ABRSM course and a former course tutor on the Mtpp (Reading) course. He is an experienced and busy adjudicator and President of Chipping Norton Music Festival.

38 36 Instrumental Section Adjudicator Kay Tucker AGSM ARCM LTCL PGCE PGCA Kay Tucker was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire and began studies on the cello at the age of 12, continuing studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She combines teaching with performing in a piano trio and string quartet and is in much demand as an Adjudicator throughout the UK, having worked at well over 100 festivals including the National Festival of Music for Youth. Her teaching experience has covered all age ranges and abilities and her particular passion for teaching beginners led her to develop an early years cello and general musicianship system, Cellobabies which, along with a version for violin and viola, is rapidly attracting support and interest throughout the UK and abroad. Stringbabies (the umbrella name for this approach) is now being delivered with great success in Surrey Arts, Music for Bedford Borough, Hackney Music Service and Music Cornwall. This work has led to Kay being invited to give seminars and training to teachers all over the UK and Kay is now working on adaptations for Double Bass, Piano, Recorder and Flute, the latter two with colleagues. Stringbabies has been shortlisted twice for the Rhinegold Music Teacher Awards for Excellence and is currently involved in four of the new music hubs Hackney, Surrey, West Sussex and Cornwall. Over recent years, Kay has worked as a consultant to Trinity Guildhall, having selected and co-selected repertoire for graded exams and diplomas. Kay became an Adjudicator Member of the British and International Federation of Festivals in 1997 and undertook the Post-graduate Certificate in Adjudication in 1999/2000.

48 46 Choral Section Adjudicator Neil Ferris Neil Ferris is the Artistic Director and conductor of the professional chamber choir Sonoro and Music Director of Wimbledon Choral Society, one of London s leading amateur choirs. In 2017 he was appointed the new Chorus Director of the BBC Symphony Chorus and guest conductor of the National Youth Choir of Wales. In demand as chorus master to the finest symphonic choruses in the UK, Neil has worked with the London Symphony Chorus, the Bach Choir, and the BBC National Chorus of Wales. He is Chorus Director at the Royal College of Music and since 2012 he has been Chorus Master at the Endellion Summer Festival. In these roles he has prepared choirs for internationally acclaimed conductors including Valery Gergiev, Sir Simon Rattle, Marin Alsop, Bernard Haitink, Carlo Rizzi, Ed Gardner, Donald Runnicles, Martyn Brabbins and Ryan Wigglesworth. Formerly Head of Choral Conducting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Neil helped establish the international reputation of the choral conducting course and developed the conservatoire s choral ensembles. This summer he prepared the chamber choir to join the BBC Proms Youth Choir with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle and conducted them on stage at the Wales Millennium Centre in a collaboration with international ballet dancer Carlos Acosta. Neil has conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, New Queens Hall Orchestra, Haydn Chamber Orchestra, Salomon Orchestra, Orchestra Vitae and the period instrument ensembles Florilegium and Apollo Baroque. He made his Royal Opera House debut in 2012 in a ROH2 production of Will Tuckett s ballet The Wind in the Willows. Recordings include an album of the choral music of Jonathan Dove with Convivium Singers released on the Naxos label and Fauré s Requiem on the Convivium Records label. He has also prepared the chorus for the LSO Live recordings of Berlioz Roméo et Juliette, Brahms Requiem and Szymanowski

49 47 Vocal Section Adjudicator Joanna Tomlinson Joanna Tomlinson is a singer, conductor, vocal coach and workshop leader. As a singer she trained at the Royal College of Music and has sung as soprano soloist in much of the core oratorio repertoire including Brahms and Mozart Requiems, Handel Messiah and Haydn Creation. As a choral singer she works with many of the UK s top groups including BBC Singers, Gabrieli Consort and Sonoro. She has given recitals for Guildford International Music Festival, Song in the City and Friends of Reading University Recital Series. She has taught singing at Royal College of Music and Trinity Laban College Junior Departments, and at Bedales School. She has worked as vocal coach for the National Youth Choir of Wales and the Polish National Youth Choir. Joanna is the Music Director of London s Constanza Chorus and the Whitehall Choir and of the internationally prize-winning Farnham Youth Choir. She has also worked as conductor or chorus master for BBC Symphony Chorus, National Youth Choir of Great Britain, London Symphony Chorus, Royal College of Music Chorus, Manchester Chamber Choir and Joyful Company of Singers. She is Associate Director of East London Chorus and a tutor for Association of British Choral Directors. She has led workshops for the ABCD, UK Choir Festival, London Choral Conducting Masterclasses, and the Gabrieli Consort, Philharmonia Orchestra and London Festival of Contemporary Church Music education schemes and has adjudicated for festivals including Cheltenham Competitive Music Festival.

60 Conditions of Entry Instrumental, Pianoforte & Vocal Sections Conditions of Entry 1. OWN CHOICE pieces must be stated on the entry form. pieces must be by published composers, not own compositions. Own compositions should be entered in classes I655 - I665 under the Instrumental Section. 2. TIME LIMITS, where specified, must be strictly observed. The performance time of the piece should be included on the entry form. In any class, the adjudicator reserves the right to stop a performance, and may choose an appropriate penalty - e.g. marks may be deducted or 1st place may not be gained. This reflects not the quality of the performance but is purely in consideration of the time spent overall. Responsibility for timing rests with the performer and their teacher / coach. 3. ACCOMPANIST (Instrumental & Vocal only, not Choral). There is an official accompanist available for booking, but you may well choose to make your own I ndependent arrangements. A charge will be made for the services of the Official Accompanist these charges are stated on the entry form. A copy of the music must be sent to the Official Accompanist at the time of entry. Rehearsals, including payment for them, are a matter for private arrangements between the entrant and the Accompanist and these need to take place before the date of the performance. 4. REPEAT PERFORMANCES. Entrants may take part in as many classes as they wish (providing they are eligible) but may not play the same piece twice, nor submit the same piece from the previous year. 5. MUSIC COPYRIGHT. Entrants are reminded that it is against the law to photocopy copyright music without written permission from the copyright owner. Photocopies will only be accepted when an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different works. In this case one copy may be made for the use of the adjudicator, provided the competitor has already purchased his / her own copy. This photocopy will be destroyed immediately after the event. Dramatic items should be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for copyright indemnity and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character. 2. Duologue and Group Acting classes are not covered by The Festival s copyright agreement, so copyright for these items should be sought by performers at the time of entry.

61 59 4. COPYRIGHT APPROVED. The Woodley Festival is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that entrants do not have to seek copyright permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items performed, to a time limit of 10 minutes. 5. AUTHORS REIMBURSED. Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participating in this Festival means that authors will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their works being performed at this Festival. 6. PROPS. The Festival has a limited supply of folding chairs, rigid chairs, two 180cm x 75cm folding trestle tables, and a smaller table. For the safety of the performers, these folding chairs & tables must not be stood on, and folding tables must only be moved under adult supervision. The teacher/coach or parent, not the Festival, is responsible for the supply & safe operation of all props. The following are not permitted within the festival buildings: animals (except guide dogs), smoke and fire. TIMES & DATES. Entrants must accept the times and dates allocated by us to any class. However, we will try to accommodate special requests in exceptional circumstances, if specified, with reasons, on the entry form. 5. THE ADJUDICATOR S DECISION will be final. No contact may be made with the Adjudicators by entrants, parents, teachers or other interested parties, unless by the consent of a member of the Committee. Trophies & prizes will be awarded to competitors at the discretion of the adjudicator. 6. ELECTRONIC ACCOMPANIMENT is not allowed in any section of the Festival. 7. No unauthorised PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO & SOUND recording is allowed at the Festival whether using cameras, phones, or other equipment. Where parents/ guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos.

62 60 8. OPEN CLASSES, AMATEURS & PROFESSIONALS. A professional is someone who earns their main livelihood from performing, not teaching, the instrument concerned. Medals are not awarded in the Open / Adult classes, and trophies are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator. Professionals may enter only the Open Classes and will not be eligible for trophies. However, an Open Ensemble of four or more players may contain one or more professionals (players or conductor) and still be eligible for a trophy. The number of such professionals must be stated on the entry forms. 9. SUB-DIVIDING & COMBINING CLASSES, & ORDER OF PERFORMANCE. The organisers will sub-divide or combine classes if circumstances make this necessary or desirable. The order of performance within a Class is at the sole discretion of the Section Chairman. Only in exceptional circumstances will the printed order be varied and then only with the agreement of the Adjudicator. 10. SAFETY OF PERFORMERS. It is necessary for teachers and parents to be aware of their responsibilities in entering any performers with limited physical capabilities or special needs, bearing in mind the limitations imposed by the stage and surrounding environment. It is also necessary for the teacher or parent to pass on to the adjudicator, via the section chair, any such information that would impact on the adjudicator's work. 11. ADJUDICATOR'S MARKS. When awarding marks, the Adjudicators will take into consideration the suitability of own choice material in own choice classes and competency when tuning instruments, when applicable. 12. AGE OF AUDIENCE. Children are very welcome at the Festival, both as performers and in the audience. Generally, we ask you to consider not bringing pre-school children to the Festival. We recognise that circumstances sometimes make this unavoidable. If so, please be prepared to take out your child if they start to cause any disturbance - in fairness to the performers and the audience around you as we do not wish to have to ask you to leave the performance room. 13. LOSS OR DAMAGE. The Festival Committee can accept no responsibility for loss or damage to personal belongings or equipment brought to the Festival. 14. CANCELLATION. The Committee reserves the right to cancel a class without prior notice. 15. DATA PROTECTION ACT The Woodley Festival will hold data submitted on the entry form on computer, solely for the purpose of running the Festival. The data will not be made available, or communicated, to any third party. 16. SAFEGUARDING POLICY. This policy relates to children under the age of 18 years and those vulnerable adults of any age who are identified to the organisers prior to their arrival at the Festival. In principle, it would be expected that only the competitor in first position is eligible for a gold medal, the competitor in second for a silver medal and the competitor in third for a bronze medal. The Festival further recommends for competitors placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd, medals may be awarded as follows: * Bronze or, very occasionally, silver medals for Merit & above * Silver medals for Highly Commended or above * Gold medals for 1st place with Highly Commended or above, or for 2nd place with Outstanding * Boxed Special Gold medals are only awarded for 1st place with Outstanding However, all medals will be awarded entirely at the discretion of the adjudicators who may elect not to adhere strictly to the recommendations of the Festival TROPHIES & PRIZES A full list of trophies appears under each Section. 64 62 Woodley Festival of Music & Arts Child Protection Policy The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech work for amateur festivals everywhere to help create thousands of educational performance opportunities for children and young people each year. The Federation, and our member Festivals, are committed to ensuring safe environments for children and young people and believe that it is always unacceptable for a child or young person to experience abuse of any kind. We recognise our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all children and young people, by a commitment to recommend best practice which protects them. This policy applies to our Board of Trustees, paid staff, Adjudicator members, volunteers, students or anyone working on behalf of the Federation and our member Festivals. We recognise that: the welfare of the child/young person is paramount all children, regardless of age, disability, gender, racial heritage, religious belief, sexual orientation or identity, have the right to equal protection from all types of harm or abuse working in partnership with children, young people, their parents, carers and other agencies is essential in promoting young people s welfare. The purpose of the policy: to provide protection for the children and young people who participate in our festivals, including the children of festival members to provide staff and volunteers with guidance on procedures they should adopt in the event that they suspect a child or young person may be experiencing, or be at risk of, harm We will seek to safeguard children and young people by: valuing them, listening to and respecting them adopting child protection guidelines through procedures and safe working practice for staff and volunteers recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made sharing information about child protection and safe working practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers sharing information about concerns with agencies who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately providing effective management for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training. The Federation will review this policy each year in November in line with Safe Network guidance or sooner in light of any changes in legislation or guidance. All changes will be communicated to our member Festivals in time for the start of the new Festival year.

65 63 Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone The Federation and its member Festivals use the following policies and procedures to create Safer Festivals for everyone: 1. A single, definitive Child Protection Policy adopted by all Federation Festivals. 2. One or more designated Festival Safeguarding Officers (FSO) appointed for each Federation Festival. Name: Sue Martin Phone: Best practice advice in the form of Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection leaflets, with support and training for all Festival staff and volunteers. Including clear reporting procedures for anyone with a concern about a child. 4. Appropriate recruitment and induction procedures for all new Festival staff and volunteers responsible for providing safe environments for everyone attending / performing at a Federation Festival. 5. All Festival stewards wear a Festival lapel badge. All teachers/parents/guardians/carers are asked to report all incidents of any nature to anyone wearing a Festival lapel badge. All reported incidents will be handled in accordance with the Safe Working Practice and Festival Child Protection best practice advice. In addition we will ensure the availability of a quiet area / room where concerns can be expressed in private. 6. For the duration of the Festival all teachers/parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the continuous care and supervision of their own children/pupils/vulnerable adults. If they are unable to attend personally, they must delegate their responsibilities to an identified adult and ensure that their children/pupils/vulnerable adults are aware of the identity and name of the person responsible for their care. This includes supervision throughout all Festival venues, performance, practice and changing areas that may be provided. 7. No unauthorised photography, audio or video recording is allowed at our Festivals. Where parents/guardians/carers do not wish photos to be taken at all, then the responsible adult attending should ensure that their child/pupil/vulnerable adult is not included in official authorised photos. 8. Some children and vulnerable adults may have specific needs in order to take part. If this is the case we ask the responsible teachers/parents/guardians/carers to contact the Festival prior to arrival. The Festival actively seeks wherever possible to meet these needs, but must know beforehand in order to prepare support or to advise that help cannot be provided on this occasion. 9. The Festival s Child Protection Policy and approach to Creating Safer Festivals for Everyone is supplied with each entry form and published on the Website. By completing and signing the entry form all parents / guardians / carers and teachers of entrants under 18 (or vulnerable adults of any age) confirm that they give (or have obtained) the necessary consents for the entrants to take part in the Festival. Without consent the entry to the Festival cannot be accepted.
