1 Master Classes We are excited to announce that the Victoria Symphony is once again offering the Master Class Education and Outreach program for the season to Middle and High School aged music students. Each musician will attend a one hour music class with the participating school for a total of four classes per year. To help defray costs the program is being offered to schools for $ GST. Musicians will book dates and times with music teachers for all 4 classes by the end of October, with all classes to be completed by the end of May. Master Classes are limited, please book as soon as possible in the school year. If you have been successful in your application, a confirmation and invoice will be sent approximately two weeks after booking. Please see the following pages for musician descriptions and a booking form. 3 Master Class VS Musicians for Ryan Cole-Trumpet Ryan Cole is celebrated as one of Canada s fastest rising young orchestral players. Recognized on the national and international level, Ryan s recent performances include appearing as a guest soloist with the renowned Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal; appearing at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Banff, Alberta; a performance for former U.S. president Bill Clinton; and a recording project for Editions BIM publishing. He recently completing a season as assistant principal trumpet with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, and has also appeared as guest principal trumpet with the Sherbrooke Symphony orchestra and many times with the Saskatoon Symphony. After completing his Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Music Education with distinction from the University of Saskatchewan in 2009, Ryan received his Master of Music degree in orchestral trumpet performance under Paul Merkelo at McGill Ryan is a passionate soloist, orchestral musician, clinician, and teacher who is comfortable in a wide variety of styles. He strongly believes in making classical music approachable for everyone. Paul Beauchesne-Tuba, brass Paul Beauchesne (Principal Tuba, Victoria Symphony) has been with the Victoria Symphony since He is also head of the Winds, Brass and Percussion faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Prior to moving to Victoria he performed across Canada and the United States with the Calgary based Foothill Brass Quintet. His first orchestral position was with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. In addition he has performed with various ensembles including the Boston Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, and the Vancouver Symphony. Paul is a Yamaha Artist and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Victoria in He has played on numerous recordings and is active as a clinician and adjudicator.

4 Chris Prince, violin As an active chamber musician and recitalist, violist Christine Prince has participated in festivals including Academia Chigianna (Italy), the International Musicians' Seminar (Cornwall, U.K.), and the Hornby Island Festival (Canada). She performs regularly in several local chamber music series, including West Coast Chamber Music (Vancouver) and the Victoria Conservatory of Music's Faculty Concert series, which she founded and directed for 13 years. Her eclectic musical interests include historically informed performance on period instruments and works by women composers. Christine has commissioned and premiered a number of works for the viola, including those of Canadian composers Steve Tittle, Sylvia Rickard, Stephen Brown, Wes Wraggett and Leila Lusitg. She is a keen advocate of contemporary music, which she features regularly in her programming. Courtney Cameron Courtney has been a violinist in the Victoria Symphony since Prior to her VS appointment, she played for several years throughout the Chicago area as a member of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Madison Symphony, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the training orchestra for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Courtney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in German and Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Lawrence University. She was awarded a teaching assistantship during her graduate studies; other honours have included performing at the Fox Valley International Community Partnership Conference where Mikhail Gorbachev was a guest, receiving the Kimberly-Clark Foundation Grant to present educational programs for public schools, and traveling to Vietnam under the Freeman Grant to perform at the Hanoi Conservatory with her quartet. When not playing violin, Courtney can be found running the trails of Victoria or birding with her trombonist husband Matt.

5 Stacey Boal-viola, recorder A multi-faceted musician, Stacey Boal teaches recorder, violin and viola at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, and plays the viola in the Victoria Symphony. In addition, she has taught at WCAMS summer camp, and led recorder workshops in Victoria, Nanaimo, Sechelt, Kelowna and Edmonton. Stacey has performed several recorder solos with the VS, most recently Bach s 2 nd Brandenburg Concerto. She has also played the recorder in Pacific Opera productions of Handel s Rodelinda and Britten s Midsummer Night s Dream. Stacey was born in Revelstoke and went to high school in North Vancouver. She is a graduate of Carson Graham and the UBC School of Music [BMus 72]. She has studied with Martha Bixler, Kenneth Wollitz, Michel Piguet and Judy Linsenberg. Currently, she is arranging new works for recorder orchestra and developing a recorder, harpsichord and violin programme for school outreach concerts. Despite her advanced years, she anticipates every opportunity to learn more about playing the recorder and leading ensembles. Kenji Fuse-viola Acclaimed for his warm tone and insightful musicmaking, Kenji Fuse holds the position of principal viola with the Victoria Symphony, and teaches at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. He also performs regularly as soloist and chamber musician, everywhere from the great concert halls to smoky nightclubs and grungy bars. Also an active composer, Kenji has performed his own Viola Concerto with the Victoria Symphony, conducted by the Canadian superstar, Yannick Nezet-Seguin. He has also recently produced a CD of the Muse Ensemble, featuring the Victoria Symphony concertmaster Terry Tam. Kenji holds degrees from the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music, studying with Lorand Fenyves, Steven Dann, Joanna Hood and Rivka Golani.

6 Müge Büyükçelen-violin Müge was born in 1975, in Istanbul, Turkey. She began violin studies at the age of nine. Between 1986 and 1991 she studied at the Istanbul State Conservatory, winning the Best Young Musician award In 1995 she obtained a Bachelor of Music at Bikent University with a High Honours Diploma, finishing in 1999 by receiving her Master of Music degree in Music Performance. In 2001, Müge came to Canada and became one of the founding members of the Hermes String Quartet in residence at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. In 2002, she won the first prize in the senior strings category in the British Columbia Fine Arts Festival. In the fall of 2003, Müge received an associate teaching diploma from the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Müge is an instructor at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and Brentwood College. She performs frequently with the Galiano Ensemble, Victoria Bach Ensemble and the Aventa Ensemble. Alex Olson-Bass Alex Olson, double bassist, mandolinist, conductor. Member of the Victoria Symphony for over 30 years. Double bass instructor in music department at the University of Victoria. Bass coach for the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. Music Director of the Victoria Mandolin Orchestra. Principal bassist of the Palm Court Orchestra. Member of JamShed, performing the folk music of eastern Europe. Freelance musician performing in bands, musicals, shows, churches. Graduate of Manhattan School of Music Diploma of Jazz and Commercial Music Studies from Capilano College.
