2 MUSIC CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT THE ROYAL DANISH ACADEMY OF MUSIC Music Confucius Institute (MCI) is a collaboration between the Royal Danish Academy of Music (RDAM) and Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing (CCOM). By combining traditional Chinese music and Western classical music, MCI creates new and insightful musical dialogue between China and Denmark. It is essential for MCI to spread knowledge of Chinese musical tradition and bring it into understanding and interaction with Western music tradition. By facilitating cross-cultural music performances, MCI aims to bring musicians together to learn and experience the diversities and synergies between different cultures. Through creative means, MCI strives to bring both contemporary and traditional Chinese music into 21 st century music education and enable Chinese music traditions to attain full recognition as an important part of Chinese culture. 3 WELCOME It is with great pleasure that Music Confucius Institute presents China Day China Day is an annual event celebrating Chinese music and culture. This year is rather special as we celebrate our 5 th anniversary. Thus, guests can look forward to a splendid concert with the premiere of Drømdæ mik æn drøm for guitars and dizi (bamboo flute) written by the prominent Danish composer, John Frandsen. In addition, the concert offers a wonderful opportunity to hear new pieces by selected students from Central Conservatory of Music in Bejing, written on the theme of H. C. Andersen. A photo exhibition will take you through the highlights of the five years since MCI s establishment and tell you more about the work we do. China Day has been held annually since 2014, and like past years, an afternoon with Chinese music and culture awaits. There will be activities for all ages, including taiji, workshops on traditional Chinese instruments, and you can learn how to sing Chinese songs, and experiences several other aspects of modern and traditional Chinese culture. China Day is organised by Music Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Music, and features musicians from RDAM and Chinese musicians selected by CCOM. Welcome! The highlight of Music Confucius Institute s China Day has always been the concerts, but aside from these, activities featuring Chinese music and culture will be held throughout the day.

5 The highlight of Music Confucius Institute s China Day has always been the concerts, but aside from these, activities featuring Chinese music and culture will be held throughout the day. At the Chinese art song and folk song workshop, you can learn more about the different styles of singing in Chinese folk music, and hear some examples of Chinese art song from the 20th Century. Try out traditional Taiji movements at the Taiji workshop these movements are also used by musicians to attain better balance and posture. Learn more about traditional Chinese instruments and their repertoire at the instrument introduction and demonstration, and get a chance to try playing them. You are also invited to try out the beautiful art of Chinese calligraphy. Last, but not least, a special photo exhibition featuring highlights from the last five years will be presented, and you can follow the progress of MCI since its establishment in 2012.

6 MCI 5 TH ANNIVERSARY Music Confucius Institute celebrates its 5 th anniversary. On 16 June five years ago, a cooperation agreement between the Royal Danish Academy of Music and Central Conservatory of Music was signed at an impressive ceremony marking the establishment of MCI. Through the course of these five years, MCI has worked to bridge Chinese and Western music, and thus create a better understanding of Chinese music and culture. Through a great variety of activities, MCI has been engaged in including both contemporary and traditional Chinese music in Danish music education on all levels. We mark the anniversary not only with a splendid concert featuring several new pieces, including Drømdæ mik æn drøm for guitars and dizi by composer John Frandsen, but also with a photo exhibition showing the highlights of the past five years. In addition, we would like to invite our guests to light refreshments in the Studio Foyer at 15:00 (after the first concert). This is our way of saying thank you for supporting us throughout the last five years!
