7 omposer Notes 7 Various editions of Phó Thác may be found within the Vietnamese atholic community. The song was composed in , at that time had limited circulation within Saigon. The first choral arrangement was done by a Saigon choir director that same year; this arrangement changed some rhythms, moved the first word of the refrain back one beat to become a pick-up note. Within the Vietnamese-erican choral community, this is the most widely used version, although it differs greatly from the original. A sed four-part arrangement was done by the composer s friend, Quang Lạc, restoring the correct rhythms but raising the key to D. n the late 1980 s, the composer himself released a two-part arrangement in the key of ; that version (with one sm change, authorized by the composer) appears on pages 2 5 of this octavo. As is customary in Vietnam, Phó Thác was released as ust melody lyrics, without chords or accompaniment. n recent years the song has regained popularity in Vietnam, has been recorded by numerous young atholic artists who have developed their own variations of the melody accompaniment. None of these artists had access to the original melody arrangement, since the composer had emigrated decades before to Paris, rance, then the United States. This complex background for Phó Thác is offered as a caution to the choir director who presents this octavo to Vietnamese singers: the rhythms harmonies will likely differ from what their Vietnamese colleagues know, especiy if they left Vietnam many years ago. (The versions of Phó Thác in current use in Vietnam are closer to the original than what is sung elsewhere.) They will probably know the song in the key of D; but for assembly participation, sidering the high range of the refrain, this edition retains the original edition s key of. And because the SATB arrangement that is widely known in the Vietnamese community alters the original rhythms, this octavo offers a new arrangement (page 6) that respects the composer s original intent. Phó Thác was written when Mr. Diệu Nguyễn was 2 years old had been released from reeducation camp in Vietnam. He returned to his home city of Saigon but had lost his family home, his girlfriend, social status, any chance of a career in dentistry (which he had studied before the war ended). ighting depression hopelessness, he wrote this song to express his faith that he was still d by God, in the midst of losing everything. After completing the song, he found comfort peace in his soul, commending into God s hs, resolving to learn to others as he was d by God. Mr. Nguyễn requests that the rendition of this song should not be sad or tragic, but with this sense of peace hope. This reflects the spirit of countless young adults in Vietnam, who sing Phó Thác to express the dedication of their own life to the One whose always abides.
