1 MS All-State Choir Test/study information The All-State Choruses are highly select groups of choral students from Florida's junior high, middle and senior high schools who are brought together for the purposes of rehearsing and performing selected music with guest conductors. There are three rigorous tests that students have to succeed on in order to go to All-State: 1. Written Musician Exam (Sept. 19) which is a test on basic theory knowledge such as note values, listening, and music vocabulary. If you pass this test, you move on to 2. Sight-Singing Exam (Sept. 19) which is a test where you must sight-read as many measures as possible out of 24 measures. If you pass this test, you move on to 3. Singing Audition (Oct. 17) which tests your knowledge of your All-State music and vocal tone/technique. After all the tests are completed, students are given an over-all composite score and the highest scoring students in the State will receive a ticket to perform in the elite All-State Chorus. The purpose of this packet is to give you a head start on preparing for this test. We have included everything you need to know in order to gain the knowledge needed to succeed on this test! Students who begin studying during summer do better on the tests.
2 All-State Calendar Auditions and performance dates Saturday, September 19, 2015 Wekiva HS 9 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2015 Boone High School 9 a.m. Written and Sight-singing tests Only students that pass the written exam will be asked to stay and take the sight-singing test. Audition Fee - $ Singing Audition Only students that passed both the written test and the sight-singing test will participate. Students will sing their voice part (Treble 1, Soprano, Bass, etc.) with 2 other students singing the same voice part. The singers will sing against a recording of the opposing voice parts. To pass this audition, a student must fully know their voice part (all words and pitches), sing with appropriate tone (round vowels and crisp consonants), and sing using correct phrasing (breathing) and dynamics. Students must be ready to perform all of the requirements to all of the songs. Thurs-Sat., Jan FMEA Convention, Tampa Rehearsal and performance times TBA All-State Rehearsals and Concert Only students that are given a ticket in November (passed all parts of every audition and received the highest overall scores), will participate in this event. There are only a certain number of tickets given for each voice part. Once that number is reached, no more students are selected to participate in All-State Chorus.
3 SUMMER STUDY AT HOME for All-State auditions There are TWO parts to the test: 1. MUSICIANSHIP TEST: VOCABULARY TERMS and SYMBOLS. Create flashcards from the official music vocabulary and symbols that is attached! LISTENING SKILLS FOR PART I-VI of your test. We have included a practice test is attached to give you an idea of what if looks like. We have also included links that will help you practice ear training. 2. SIGHT-READING! Study the sight-reading with a buddy this summer! Get together and practice reading together and alone. HOW DO I STUDY THIS SUMMER? Practice sight-reading alone and with others who can hold you accountable. Study the vocabulary and train your ears for the Listening portion at home using these websites: We will hold before school practices in August and September to help you solidify your knowledge of these concepts. You can also contact us over the summer for help if you have questions: Mrs. Connelly: Courtney.Connelly@ocps.net Mrs. Cobb: Ashley.Cobb@ocps.net
