2 2 Program Notes The well-known and leader and comoser, Henry Fillmore ulished his most amous comosition, Lassus Tromone, in 1915 This was the second o his oular tromone smears eaturing the sliding tromones His irst smear, Miss Tromone, was ulished in 1908, and had ecome a oular selection on the concerts y the Sousa Band When several memers o the Sousa Band visited with Henry Fillmore in 1915, they mentioned that Miss Tromone had leased audiences whenever it was erormed This comment roaly insired Henry to write his est-known iece o music, Lassus Tromone According to the author, Paul Bierley, For all ractical uroses, Lassus Tromone is a classic The structure is solid The melody, harmony and rhythm are comined in a glorious, near erect manner It is highly listenale, clever and snay Because it literally exudes hainess, it is little wonder that Henry lived to see sales o the sheet music surass the two million mark Lassus Tromone quickly took a lace among the world s toe-taers, and it still alls in that category When he was asked aout the origin o the title, Fillmore resonded, Why, molasses, o course I thought o molasses on read or reakast, dinner, and suer Sousa soon discovered the magic o Lassus and he erormed it almost daily or several years (Inormation rom Halleluah Tromone!, The Story o Henry Fillmore, y Paul Bierley, ulished y Carl Fischer Catalog Numer TXT1) Perormance Notes This edition o Lassus Tromone is ased on the original 1915 ulication which was layed y the Sousa Band It is erect or oth smaller and larger ands It is so well written that it will also sound good with ands that do not have large or comlete instrumentation 1) Temo The temo is not ast Fillmore wrote the words, Slow Drag on the conductor art instead o a more traditional temo marking This will work very well at aout Π= 96 2) Dynamic Contrast The est erormances o Lassus Tromone will e layed with great dynamic contrast Exaggerate the dierence in dynamics y laying the soter ortions even soter ) Tromone Smears This work eatures tromone smears All o the smears (glissando) need to e layed louder Trio 4) Bells As in the original, the ells only lay the irst strain o the trio 5) Tromones For greater dynamic (and texture) contrast, tromones can e tacet the irst art o the Trio the irst time through The counter-melody will e layed y the Tenor Sax and the Baritone At measure 69, tromones lay oth times c140f
