1 July 1, 2015 The Ballard High School Performing Arts Booster Club (BPABC) invites you to become a corporate sponsor. The BPABC ensures that all interested students are given the opportunity to participate in any of the different branches of Bands, Choirs, Orchestras and Theatre programs, and have provided volunteer and financial support that contributes to the success of the overall program. Many of the resources that continue to make the Ballard High School Performing Arts and Theatre program successful are not funded by the public dollars. We depend on many fundraising activities throughout the year, and the generosity of families, students and community with their volunteer hours and donations. This past year we were able to finance necessary instrument repairs, vocal and instrumental coaching, and most importantly, because of the corporate sponsorships, we were able to grant numerous student scholarships which covered fees and travel expenses. In the absence of these scholarships, these recipients would not have been able to participate and join their peers in clinics and some prestigious invitational performances. We would like to offer you an opportunity of becoming a corporate sponsor that will benefit over 300 students. BPABC is a 501(c)(3) entity, and corporate sponsorship is tax deductible, less fair market value of theatre ticket prices. Please see the attached document which shows the different levels of sponsorship and benefits you can choose from. We have also provided history of our successes these past few years, and the calendar of events for the upcoming school year. If you do decide to become a sponsor, please return the Sponsorship Form as soon as possible in order to ensure that your company name and/or logo (as stated in the Sponsorship Benefit) is printed in our upcoming year s programs and posters. For more information about our programs, we invite you to visit our website at If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at bpabc_corp@yahoo.com or (206) Sincerely, Nanette Magno BPABC VP Fundraising Ballard Performing Arts Booster Club, P. 2 About Ballard High School s Performing Arts Department Award-Winning Music and Theater The Ballard High School Music and Drama Programs have recently gained regional, national, and international acclaim for their ensembles and performances. The Music Program includes over 300 students who participate in two concert bands, three concert choirs, one orchestra, percussion ensemble, two jazz bands, one jazz choir and multiple chamber ensembles. The Drama Program has over 90 students who... partake in Theatre and Technical Theatre classes, and includes almost 200 students who participate in the three extra-curricular plays and musicals each season. The top music ensembles at the school have traveled to festivals and performances across the country and have won multiple awards and recognitions for their high level of music-making and outstanding performances. Highlights include Concert Choir s performance at New York City s Lincoln Center, Orchestra s recognition as Best Overall Orchestra in both the Vancouver and San Francisco Heritage Festivals, and Jazz Band s participation in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival, the Earshot Jazz Festival and Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz concert. Each year, Ballard s Drama and Music programs combine to produce a full scale musical theatre production. In the past few years, Ballard s musicals have been nominated for over 20 awards from the 5th Avenue High School Musical Theater Awards, winning in the categories of Best Supporting Actress (Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2015), Best Costumes (Bye Bye Birdie in 2012 and Urinetown in 2014) and Best Orchestra (Cabaret, 2011), with additional nominations for Best Chorus, Best Vocal Direction, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Group, and Best Overall Musical. Ballard s Drama program received two nominations to represent the state of Washington in the American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The American High School Theatre Festival is a part of the International Fringe Festival, which is the largest arts festival in the world. Ballard High School is proud to have received this coveted spot and was one of only 40 U.S. high schools in attendance. Students traveled to the UK in August, 2013 to perform Jason Robert Brown s Songs for a New World. Ballard Music and Theatre Alumni have attended many of the nation s most prestigious performing arts schools and universities, including The University of Michigan, Northwestern University, Oberlin College, The New School (NYC), Stanford University, University of Oregon, The University of Washington, Cornish College of the Arts, Pacific Lutheran University, Point Park University (Pittsburgh), Loyola University, The University of Portland, and Chapman University. A Supportive Community Ballard High School s performing arts programs are fortunate to have a supportive parent community the Performing Arts Booster Club who support the programs with financial and volunteer assistance. Ongoing fundraising activities continue throughout the year, including auctions, galas, concerts, special productions, candy and coffee sales, etc. Support from the local business community augments the Booster Club s activities, providing support for scholarships, field trips, sheet music, supplies, lighting, costumes, instruments, vocal training, and more. 3 BHS Playmakers Theatrical Season In Eurydice, Sarah Ruhl reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists, and breathtaking visual effects, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story. "Rhapsodically beautiful. A weird and wonderful new play" - an inexpressibly moving theatrical fable about love, loss and the pleasures and pains of memory. - The New York Times "Exhilarating!! A luminous retelling of the Orpheus myth, lush and limpid as a dream where both author and audience swim in the magical, sometimes menacing, and always thrilling flow of the unconscious." - The New Yorker "Ruhl's wild flights of imagination, some deeply affecting passages and beautiful imagery provide transporting pleasures. They conspire to create original, at times breathtaking, stage pictures." - Variety "Touching, inventive, invigoratingly compact and luminously liquid in its rhythms and design, "Eurydice" reframes the ancient myth of ill-fated love to focus not on the bereaved musician but on his dead bride -- and on her struggle with love beyond the grave as both wife and daughter." - The San Francisco Chronicle Based on the story of Genesis, the age-old conflict of parents and children takes the stage in this epic, heartfelt. From musical theatre genius Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, & Godspell) comes a joyous and inspirational musical about parents, children and faith... not to mention centuries of unresolved family business! Children of Eden is a show about parenthood and the impossible idea that every child will eventually leave home and become a parent in their own time, a cycle that never ends: As Adam, Eve, Noah, and the "Father" who created them deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children, the show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that "the hardest part of love... is letting go." Students who successfully complete Theatre Arts I & II as well as Technical Theatre may submit a proposal to direct in the Student Directed Productions. These productions can be ten-minute plays, cuttings from a longer play, or short (less than 30 minutes) one acts. The productions will be chosen based on the strength of the proposal, the balance of the evening (length of individual projects, comedy/drama, etc.), and appropriateness of the individual pieces for the student directors. Productions will be fully staffed and designed by students who use these productions as a laboratory experience, putting into practice the principles which they have learned in the classroom. Working closely with Mr. Riley, the student will select, cast, and direct the play and supervise the lighting, design, and construction for the production. The Student Directed Productions are a good opportunity for younger and less experienced students to work onstage and backstage in a less intimidating environment than the mainstage at Ballard High School. 7 ! One of my secrets... As a small business owner, I have a limited budget for advertising and promotion. As far as I am concerned, the most bang for your buck is a corporate sponsorship with a local school. I have chosen to be a corporate sponsor of the Ballard Performing Arts and I know people support businesses that support their local school programs. We have a great local school with a incredibly strong, and loyal community that takes note of businesses that support Ballard High School. Imagine your logo in front of the thousands of people that pass through our events (e.g., concerts and fundraisers). We have over 300 Ballard youth in our program and that translates into a large adult community not only parents/guardians, but grandparents, relatives, and friends. We also have numerous established alumni that are present at our many events. This past year corporate sponsorships helped us with greatly needed instrument repair, coaching, and perhaps most notably scholarships. We are an inclusive performing arts community and making sure that everyone can participate in our activities is critical to the character of our program. So if you are a business owner please consider a sponsorship. If you have a connection to that managerial level where a sponsorship could be considered, please consider putting in a plug for such involvement. It is truly a mutually beneficial relationship. Yours truly, John Loacker, President Ballard Performing Arts Booster Club Ballard Performing Arts Booster Club, P.O. Box 17774, Seattle, Washington, Tax ID#
