1 Charles J. Colgan Sr. High School Center for Fine and Performing Arts Audition Packet Online applications must be submitted by December 11, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. Applications can be found here. Applicants for the center for Fine and Performing Arts will: A. Complete the online application and submit it ONLINE B. Participate in an audition or portfolio review C. Bring the signed enrollment agreement to the audition D. Bring the completed qualifications form to the audition E. Dress appropriately for the audition. Music, Visual Art and Creative Writing students should dress professionally. Theatre and Dance students should dress comfortably for movement. (proper dance attire for dancers) F. Participate in the audition on the date and time given to you. You will receive this information in a letter in December after applications have been processed. Auditions will be held starting at 8:00 a.m.: Saturday, January 6 th, 2018 for Orchestra, Dance, Choir and Creative Writing SNOW DATE January 13 th for January 6 th auditions Saturday January 20 th, 2018 for Band, Music Technology/Piano, Theatre and Visual Art SNOW DATE January 27 th for January 20 th auditions Auditions times will vary by concentration. Applicants should reserve the entire day. You will be directed to your audition location as you enter the school. Audition location will be: Charles J. 2 VOCAL MUSIC AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 1. Students will participate in a 10 minute group warm up session. Students will be led by Mrs. Stenson and they will work through vocal warm ups, aural echo skills and learn a part song by ear. 2. Students must prepare approximately one minute of a song from Pathways to Song: Volume 1 (low or high voice) or one of the selections listed below from 24 Italian Art Songs and Arias (any key). *Caro Mio Ben *Sebben Crudele *Se Tu M ami *Gai Sole del Gange *Per la Gloria Both scores may be found in local music stores. Students must be prepared to sing their choice from memory and must provide the piano sheet music at the time of the audition. Copies are acceptable. An accompanist will be provided, or you may bring your own. Please clearly mark the one minute excerpts in the scores you bring for the judges and accompanists. You will need 3 copies. Post-performance, the judges may provide vocal coaching and a brief range testing. 3. Students will sight read eight measures. The sight reading will be step-wise, range from do-la, start and end on Do, and consist of eighth notes and quarter notes. The sight reading will be presented in the key of Eb or C, however, the student may ask for a different starting pitch if needed. If students would like a different starting pitch they should be prepared to request the new key of their choice. Common choices include: Bb, Ab, F and G. *Student will be evaluated using the rubric on the following page:

3 Characteristic A B C D E Tone Quality A healthy, vibrant, resonant, and free tone that is consistently well supported. Vowels are formed properly, resulting in a free, unforced tone. Consonants clearly communicate the text. Register changes properly made throughout vocal range. An energized tone that often displays focus and resonance in extreme registers. Vowel placement and formation are often consistent, with most consonants audible. Extremes in volume and register do not hinder the overall beauty of tone. A generally good tone but sometimes breathy and with tension. Vowels are sometimes improper, creating a tone that is forced and strident. Consonants are sometimes audible, and some diphthongs not treated correctly. Problems sometimes occur in extremes of volume or range. Tone seldom possesses space, resonance, and focus. Freedom and support, and/or beauty of tone are seldom achieved. Basic vowel formation is incorrect, diphthongs lack definition, most words are not clear. Beauty of tone is seldom present in extremes of registers and volume. Tone completely lacks space, support, focus, freedom, and beauty. Proper vowel formation is never achieved, and consonants are unidentifiable. Freedom and beauty of tone is not achieved due to forced volumes and inappropriate register adjustments. Technical Preparation Musical Effect Tone completely lacks space, support, focus, freedom, and beauty. Proper vowel formation is never achieved, and consonants are unidentifiable. Freedom and beauty of tone is not achieved due to forced volumes and inappropriate register adjustments. The composer s intent regarding tempo, style, and markings are consistently followed. Dynamics, phrasing, articulations, and interpretative nuances are artistically executed. There is a consistent feeling of musical line, and a feeling of forward motion. Sensitivity and expression are evident to convey the composer s message. Intonation is often accurate, with adjustments made in extreme ranges and difficult harmonic passages. Control of pulse is evident with a few minor problems. Recovery from any memorization problems is immediate. A musical performance that often exhibits proper tempo and style. Markings are often followed. Dynamic contrast, artistically shaped musical line, and appropriate articulations are present most of the time. Singer is mostly poised and confident, and communicates well with the audience Pitch is sometimes correct, with problems caused by harmonic challenges and vocal faults. Entrances and releases are not executed. There may be an overall lack of understanding of the score due to poor preparation. Tempo and style are never correct. There is an inaccurate use of dynamic ranges. There is never a feeling of phrase shape. The singer is not engaged in the music nor communicates with the audience. There is a total absence of emotional involvement.

Colgan, Sr. High School. Students applying for acceptance into the CFPA Program must have a year-end grade of C (2.0) or higher in their general education classes and a yearend grade of B (3.0) or higher in their chosen concentration area. All students enrolled in the program in the 9 th grade must complete a minimum of 5 credits in their chosen arts concentration area, participate in a minimum of 4 Master Classes per year and meet participation requirements in their concentration. (refer to the CFPA handbook for details) Students accepted in 10 th grade year must complete a minimum of 4 credits, 4 Master Classes per year and all participation requirements required for the chosen concentration. All Senior will complete a Senior Exit Project which may be performance/portfolio or product oriented in order to receive CFPA Certification on their Diploma. (see CFPA Handbook) If accepted, the applicant must comply with all requirements for remaining in the school including those related to the PWCS Code of Behavior. Enrollment may require a commitment of time outside regular school hours, including weekends. If a student struggles to meet one of the requirements below, a conference will be held with the student, the program coordinator, the concentration lead teacher, and the parents. Based on the conference, the student may be placed on probation until improvement is noted. 1. Failure to maintain a 3.0 or better in the concentration courses and a 2.0 or better in all other courses. 2. Unsatisfactory conduct in violation of the Code of Behavior. 3. Excessive absences/tardies from classes, or performances. If progress or improvement has not been made by the end of the year, parents will be notified that the student may not be allowed to continue in the program for the following year. Changes in concentration area may only occur at the end of Freshman year. Classes will be offered based on demonstrated student interest. Classes not achieving full enrollment may not be offered. Virginia High School League Athletic and Activities Eligibility Athletic eligibility for transfer students is governed by Prince William County regulation and the Virginia High School League Transfer Rule Rising 9 th grade transfer students who are accepted into a specialty program establish eligibility where they attend school. Rising 10 th or 11 th grade transfer students who are accepted into a specialty program must submit a letter requesting a VHSL waiver. If a transfer student leaves the specialty program to return to his/her base school, the decision will have some impact on a student s VHSL eligibility.
