Introduction Performing and Visual Arts are an essential part of your daughter s development. At Glennie, we offer a wide range of activities, both in the curriculum and as extra-curricular endeavours, to give all girls experiences in the arts. In the Junior Years, art and music lessons are given from specialist teachers, with drama and dance being included in music lessons each week. In the Middle and Senior Years, music, drama and art are offered as curriculum subjects through to Year 12. Performing Arts Page 3
Extra-Curricular program Extra-Curricular Lesson Times Junior Years P 6 Girls are given lessons at fixed times, in conjunction with classroom teachers. Middle Years 7 10 Girls have a rotational schedule for lessons times during class times. Senior Years Girls have lessons during break times, spare lessons and before and after School. If your daughter does French Immersion, has multiple extra-curricular lessons or specialised sports training, this needs to be noted on the Lesson Enrolment form to help co-ordinate lessons at the best possible times. Payment Details Parents will be invoiced directly by their Tutor at the beginning of each semester. Teachers reserve the right to charge for lessons if girls do not attend without providing 24 hours prior notice. Eisteddfod All girls are given the opportunity to perform individually and in small groups at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Parents/guardians will receive information from your daughter s teacher as to which sections are appropriate to enter. When selecting the Eisteddfod Performance option, be aware that there will be additional expenses (where applicable) for accompanists, specific repertoire and travel. Entry fees will be charged to your School account. Opposite: Just part of the massive haul of trophies won by Glennie performers in the 2010 Toowoomba Eisteddfod Page 4 The Glennie School

Fees will be invoiced to parents/guardians at the beginning of each semester. Payment is required within two weeks of commencing lessons. Girls can choose from a range of instruments; Strings Violin Viola Cello Double Bass Brass French Horn Trombone Trumpet Euphonium Tuba Woodwind Flute Oboe Clarinet Saxophone Bassoon Guitar Acoustic Electric Bass Other Piano Percussion (including Drums) Drums (only) Voice Page 6 The Glennie School
Music Theory and Music Craft It is recommended that all girls from Years 5 to 12 doing instrumental music lessons also enrol in Music Theory classes. The Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) is gradually replacing the Music Theory course with Music Craft. Music Craft is considered an allround music theory and aural program, more suitable for supporting AMEB practical courses. Music Craft is currently offered for Preliminary to Grade Two at Glennie. Music Theory is offered from Grade Three to Grade Six. If your daughter is going to undertake the higher AMEB examinations, she will need to have theory certificates to receive her instrumental qualifications. Performing Arts Page 7
Speech and Drama Lessons are held in the Performing Arts Centre or in the Junior Years music tutorial rooms. Two specialist teachers for all levels and abilities are available to provide comprehensive and specialist tuition. Fees will be invoiced to parents/guardians at the beginning of each semester. Payment is required within two weeks of commencing lessons. Dance Years 7 to 12 Dance lessons are offered one afternoon each week and aim to provide fun and fitness. The class is a combination of Hip-Hop and Jazzercise for all levels of experience and is open to girls in Years 7 to 12. This Dance troupe may then participate in various performances throughout the year, including School functions. Ballet with Madame Mills Private ballet classes are offered by Ms Janene Mills, Teacher of Dance and French, at the Glennie School Juniors Years. Girls are placed into classes depending on their age and ability. Performance opportunities are provided throughout the year and have the chance to participate in Royal Academy of Dance examinations and presentations. Page 8 The Glennie School
extra-curricular FOR JUNIOR YEARS Little Mozarts and Little Vivaldis Prep to Year 2 These piano and violin lessons, designed for our littlest Glennie girls, encourage music appreciation and participation in young children. This exciting course will help to; Develop co-ordination and self-expression through playing, listening, singing, movement and rhythm activities. Improve learning, memory and reasoning skills Lessons are conducted in groups of two and three for piano and individually for strings. Girls continuing from the previous year will start lessons in Term One of the next year. New Prep or Year 1 and 2 girls will commence lessons in Term Two. Group Vocal Program Years 2 to 6 These lessons, conducted in groups of two or three, are designed for girls in Year 2 to 6, to improve their singing and ensemble skills. The lessons are not for examination preparation, but to provide an informal, fun way for girls to gain confidence in their singing ability. Group Drama Program Years 2 to 6 These group lessons are designed for girls in Years 2 to 6, to improve their self confidence and speech skills. Lessons are not for examination preparation, but to provide an informal, fun way for girls to explore the elements of drama. Depending on progress, students may be given the opportunity to enter the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Information regarding this will come directly for your daughter s Speech and Drama teacher. 11 How to Join Girls in Years 7 to 12 can sign on to the ensemble or choir of their choice during the Music Muster, held on the first Friday of Term One. An informal audition may be held to establish the strengths of each performer and to place them in the correct positions within the ensemble/ choir. G Minor and G Major Choirs are open to all girls from the appropriate Year levels who wish to sing. These two groups are not auditioned. Concert Choir is open to all girls in Years 8 to 12 who wish to sing. Performance Choir is an auditioned group of approximately seventy girls (these girls are also members of Concert Choir). Choral group and Glennie Singers are an auditioned group of approximately sixteen girls (who will be members of two Choirs). Junior Years girls have a special lesson with their Junior Years Music teacher at the beginning of Term One to discuss their options. Performing Arts Page 11
Rehearsals and Performances Throughout the academic year, many opportunities exist for the girls to perform as part of their ensemble or choir at various competitions, festivals, School functions and community events. Our main performances are the Toowoomba Eisteddfod and the annual Arts Concert Showcase. To ensure each ensemble or choir is performing at its best, weekly rehearsals are compulsory for all members, and girls are encouraged to do approximately two hours of practice per ensemble/ choir, each week. Rehearsal times are held at a set time each week, before or after School. Page 12 The Glennie School
Music Camp The annual Music camp for Years 5 to 12 in February of each year is an important part of the development of the choirs and ensembles. This is an additional cost, and we recommend that all students attend. Performing Arts Page 13
Co-curricular for Junior Years Choral & String Immersion Years 3 to 4 In Semester Two, all girls in Year 3 start their journey into the School s choral program. Lessons are held once a week in a group setting where students learn such things as vocal care, pitch security and become aware of rhythm and beat. In Year 4, this program expands and classes are introduced to both choral singing and the string family of instruments. Classes are divided into two groups and have one lesson per week for one semester in each area. The Choral Program offers girls the opportunity to improve their vocal ability in a large group setting and to experience a variety of musical styles through practical activities. The Year 4 String Program offers girls the opportunity to learn new skills and to experience the joy of creating music with an instrument. The string instruments offered are violin, viola and cello. It is hoped this experience will give the girls the beginner skills and confidence to continue playing and singing and perhaps, in time, join the School s choirs and ensembles. Page 14 The Glennie School
Year 5 Instrument Immersion In Year 5, all girls are given the opportunity to take up an instrument as part of the School curriculum. Girls receive group tuition once a week and by Term Four, all will be working in an Orchestra or Concert Band setting. Extensive matching of all girls to an instrument is done throughout Semester One. All girls will receive tuition on the correct handling and posture for their instrument as well as music book to take home for daily practice. In Semester Two girls are placed into small groups, where they will begin tuition on their instrument that they will study for the next eighteen months. Year 6 Instrument Immersion In Year 6, girls continue with a weekly lesson with their chosen instrument. They now progress into an ensemble situation. Girls new to the School will be given the opportunity to study an instrument they are already learning. If they have not started an instrument yet, they will be given the opportunity to study guitar. Year 6 girls who are showing outstanding progress on their instrument, may be given the opportunity to move onto a related instrument. This depends on the availability of instruments at the School. Girls will be taught the many techniques of ensemble playing, rehearsal rules and performance methods, and how to conduct themselves in each of these situations. Girls also have the opportunity to be a member of many of the School s ensembles including Youth Concert Band, Youth Orchestra and Youth String Ensemble. Performing Arts Page 15
Performing Arts Supporters Association (PASA) This is a group of parents who support and promote the arts at Glennie. PASA members meet monthly during in term time to discuss fundraising and events. The kind of fundraising activities undertaken by PASA include a barbecue at the Glennie fair, making and selling sweets at Glennie musical productions, PASA High Tea and trips to musical performances in Brisbane. PASA welcomes new members. Please contact us you would like to become involved in supporting your daughter s development in the arts.
