2 VOICE WORKSHOP Duration and Times: 6 hours per day 10am 1pm, 2pm 5pm (25 th 28 th March) 2pm 8pm (29 th March), ending with a recital by participants Note: times may subject to change. Google maps link here, or via the following QR code: Workshop content: Patricia Rozario will cover vocal technique, musical style, phrasing and interpretation and other related areas. Mark Troop will coach diction, language and general musicality. Both sessions will run separately and concurrently throughout the day, and participants will come together in the late afternoon. Repertoire: Participants will be required to prepare 3 items. - two Aria Antiche - one song/lieder/chanson OR one aria Participation Fees: Active: Workshop (5 full days) RM850 Passive: Regular observers: RM80/day or RM350 total for all five days Observers student rates: RM50/day or RM200 total for all five days

3 Please note that seats for observers are limited. You may sign up as an observer in the application form, or walk-in during the workshop (subject to seat availability). College students must present institutional ID to qualify for student rates. Pre-tertiary students may present ICs, or other official documentation that indicates their age. Lodging and food: Expenses for lodging and food are to be borne by participants. There are various food outlets within walking distance, and participants can contact the coordinator ( below) for advice on accommodation. Application: As places are limited, applicants will be screened before confirmation of participation. This is to ensure that all participants meet the required level for an effective learning. Application deadline is 28 Feb Confirmation of participation will be announced by 5 March Applicants who are not accepted will be given a full refund. Participants are required to provide video recordings of the performance of two items (in English, Italian, French or German). 4 PATRICIA ROZARIO Born in Bombay, Patricia Rozario studied at the Guildhall School of Music, winning the Gold Medal, and at the National Opera Studio. She has been the recipient of many prizes and awards, including the Maggie Teyte Prize. She has enjoyed a wide-ranging career in opera, concert work, recording and broadcasting. Patricia s unique voice and artistry has inspired over 15 of the world s leading composers to write for her, notably Arvo Pärt and Sir John Tavener,, who alone wrote over thirty works for her. She has performed with world-renowned conductors, including Sir John Pritchard, Solti, Ashkenazy, Jurowski, Belohlavek, Gardiner, Pinnock, Ivan Fischer, Hickox and Andrew Davis, and sung opera at Aix-en-Provence, Amsterdam, Lyon, Lille, Bremen, Antwerp, Wexford, English National Opera, Glyndebourne and Opera North. She has also given concerts and recital worldwide and appeared frequently at the BBC Proms. Patricia has given the world premieres of many pieces written especially for her, including works by Arvo Pärt, Roxanna Panufnik, Andrew Gant and John Tavener. On the opera stage, she created the role of Belisa in Simon Holt s The Nightingale s to Blame, and sang in the premieres of Errolyn Wallen s operas at the Linbury Studio, and Golem by John Casken. Further operatic highlights include Ilia Idomeneo for Glyndebourne, Zerlina Don Giovanni at Aix-en-Provence and Servilia La clemenza di Tito for Opèra de Lyon. Her extensive discography includes major works by John Tavener, Arvo Pärt and Roxanna Panufnik Dance of Life Talinn Mass, as well as recordings with Graham Johnson for the Hyperion Schubert Series. Future highlights include performances at Dartington, Harrogate Festival, Brinkburn Festival, and the Con Brio Festival in India, as well as two concerts in Tallin to celebrate the birthday of Arvo Pärt. Patricia, together with her husband, Mark Troop, started a singing teaching programme in India five years ago. Giving Voice to India develops local talent, both individually and chorally, in the techniques of western singing. Its long-term aim is to raise the standard of western music in India to an international level. In summer 2014 Patricia put on the first production of Dido and Aeneas with an all-indian cast, on a tour of India. Patricia Rozario was awarded the OBE in the New Year s Honours in 2001, the Asian Women s Award for achievement in the Arts in 2002 and the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in January She received a fellowship of the Royal College of Music in 2014.

5 MARK TROOP Mark Troop, pianist, broadcaster and writer, is the founder of The Chamber Music Company; a group devoted to creative performance of all types of music, and Yin Yang Collective, the UK s first east-west collaborative band. With cellist Matthew Barley Mark Troop founded the CMC Summer Solstice, bringing together Classical and Jazz in a unique set up, creating The Ronnie Scotts of Classical Music (The Guardian). For BBC Radio 3 Mark Troop & CMC created, with Mike Gonzalez, a special three-part Latin American series relating the history and literature of Latin America to its music: The Twilight of the Iguana. Mark Troop has set up several British Council tours, to India (three times), Spain (twice) and Latin America, including concerts and educational work. Mark Troop runs five festival events: the CMC Rare Music Series, The Latin American Roadshow, the Second Glance Festival of New Music, Inspired By China and I m a Stranger Here Myself. The CMC Rare Music Series explores neglected Classical repertory and lately presented RMS Concert 3 rediscovering Salomon Jadassohn, The Latin American Roadshow is a multi-arts Festival dedicated to the culture of Latin America. In spring 2006 he inaugurated his Second Glance in London, a festival of second performances. It ran again in 2007 and subsequently toured South Africa. A new interactive festival Inspired by China was inaugurated autumn 2008 as part of China Now. It is touring UK as The Lure of the East and is the basis for concerts for Chinese New Year 2014 and 2015 and a new Chinese festival in London. Mark and German chanteuse Antonia Schnauber created a cabaret show, I m a Stranger Here Myself, which has toured several times in Germany the Edinburgh Fringe and this year in London. Mark Troop taught at the Guildhall School of Music and at the Dartington International Summer School for two decades, and still teaches at St Paul s Boys School. As a writer he has been published in Musical Opinion, Piano and Musical Performance.
