1 Oxford s Professional Orchestra 2017 into 2018 Christmas and New Year Concerts
2 The Orchestra City of Oxford Orchestra Welcome to our ever-popular trio of Christmas and New Year celebrations. The Traditional Christmas Carol Concert not only brings you a wonderful selection of seasonal favourites but also gives you the chance to join in and sing in the marvellous Sheldonian Theatre. The Christmas Concerto by Candlelight is a truly magical musical experience in the superb acoustics of Exeter College Chapel. Finally, the exuberant Stephen Bell presents his unmissable Viennese New Year Concert which features two brilliant concertos alongside his exciting Strauss selection. We look forward to welcoming old friends and new faces. Lindsay Sandison Telephone info@cityofoxfordorchestra.co.uk Registered Charity No Ticket Hotline

5 Friday 19 January 8pm Sheldonian Theatre 45th Annual Traditional Viennese New Year Concert Mozart The Marriage of Figaro Peter Adams Cello Haydn Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Strauss Waltzes, Polkas and Marches Haydn Trumpet Concerto in E flat John Wallace Trumpet Stephen Bell Conductor We are delighted to celebrate not only our 45th Viennese New Year Concert but also ten years since our remarkable Artistic Director, Stephen Bell joined the City of Oxford Orchestra. This concert is also a tribute to Stephen s predecessor, and the founder of our annual Viennese New Year concerts - Roger Payne. Roger joined COO as Principal Trumpet in the late sixties and conducted our New Year concerts for 35 years. Tonight we play two concertos from one of his favourite composers. Virtuoso cellist Peter Adams performs Haydn s lyrical Cello Concerto in the first half. Then, in Roger s honour, one of his dear friends, the renowned John Wallace plays Haydn s brilliant Trumpet Concerto before Stephen whirls the orchestra through his usual sparkling programme of Strauss favourites.
