Canadian Orff Schulwerk Courses Guidelines Levels I, II, & III Note: all motions are CARRIED unless otherwise noted. May 8, 1986 A committee consisting of Joan Sumberland (chairperson), Ursula Rempel and Sister Marcelle Corneille has been investigating the establishment of guidelines and criteria for Summer School Orff courses. Judy Sills, Donna Otto-Spence and Carolyn McMillan have acted as advisors. The committee sent a survey to all people involved in Summer School Orff courses in Canada. The response indicated that there was not a great deal of discrepancy. The committee plans to meet in the afternoon of May 8th, and should reach a consensus about Level I. Levels II and III will follow. A report will be forthcoming, and we will discuss it at the next National Executive meeting. Guidelines are established for Level I. These will not be printed and distributed until all three levels have been established. There was unanimous concern that we need to establish guidelines and standards for Summer School courses. Joan Sumberland will discuss questions with those currently concerned with levels courses. The final guidelines constitute a long-term project. April 11, 1987 Guidelines and Criteria for Levels Courses: Report submitted by Joan Sumberland. The Executive reviewed the Guidelines and made some necessary changes. Since Jos Wuytack's course outline formed the basis of these Guidelines, we require a letter from him, indicating approval. Judy Sills will give a copy of the Guidelines to him. He will be acknowledged for his contribution. The resources will require revision from time to time. Before the final draft is completed, the Executive should look at the numbering system. Phyllis Ilavsky will find the equivalent of Grade III Toronto Conservatory in the Western Board. Carolyn McMillan relayed a concern of Joan Sumberland's, that she and her committee be given a budget. Joan should submit all bills to the Treasurer. THAT we accept the amended Guidelines as a draft document to be operative for two years, at the end of which, a reassessment will be made, and the document will be put into a final form. (Mary Robinson Ramsay, Barbara Newman) Recommendations: 1. Periodic reassessment of the document will be undertaken. 2. An evaluation form will accompany the draft Guidelines. Morna-June Morrow will design the form. The completed evaluation should be sent to her. IIIM2b Canadian Orff Schulwerk Courses Guidelines Levels I, II, & III Page 1

A copy of the draft will be sent to instructors prior to the commencement of the 1987 Summer Session. March 17, 1988 Summer School Guidelines Evaluations: Morna-June Morrow reviewed the comments from the surveys. THAT the National Executive ask the Summer School Course Guidelines Committee to review the Evaluation Survey Forms of the 1987 Preliminary Draft of the Guidelines, before the next National Executive Meeting. (Morna-June Morrow, Judy Sills) Recommendations: 1. That a the National Executive express sincere thanks to the Guidelines Committee for all their hard work on the Guidelines, and to Morna-June Morrow for her compilation of the evaluation of the evaluation survey forms. 2. That the Chairman of the Committee be invited to the next National Executive meeting to discuss the revised Guidelines, which will have already been distributed to the Executive members. 3. That the Guidelines are a working document, subject to periodic review and revision. March 18, 1988 ORFF SUMMER SCHOOL COURSE GUIDELINES REPORT by Morna-June Morrow. Joan Sumberland is Chairman of the Committee. The Guidelines were used in Evaluation forms were sent to instructors. The Guidelines for Levels I, II and III and for the Introductory Course will be sent back to the committee. May 13, 1989 Joan Sumberland presented the new Guidelines and went through all the components. The French equivalent for Level I has been received from Sister Marcelle Corneille. Changes in Basic Orff in Level I have been changed from 2 hours to 3 hours daily. Level I In Level I: RECORDER Some disagreement was expressed over the word "Introduction to Soprano Recorder". A suggestion was made to replace the word "Introduction" by "gaining fluency on soprano recorder." Joan will contact Ursula Rempel and Sister Marcelle to discuss it. If the Committee disagrees with the proposal, the National Executive will accept their decision on the wording to be used. No changes appeared in Level I: CHORAL Judy asked Joan if, in order to take Level II, people should provide a transcript from Level I. No policy was made on this matter. Level II In Level II: BASIC ORFF Phyllis asked Joan if the use of the word "Cantata" is only in quotation. No other changes in that subject nor in Level II: MOVEMENT. In Level II: RECORDER IIIM2b Canadian Orff Schulwerk Courses Guidelines Levels I, II, & III Page 2

Phyllis suggested that the word "fluency" should be used to be consistent with the use of it in Level I. No changes in Level II: CHORAL. Leanne expressed that the document is very specific and clear. Level III Joan asked if anyone knew what was the Western Board equivalent to Grade 3 Harmony. Judy mentioned that she will find out. In Level III: RECORDER Joan specified that the Committee did not like the use of the word "enrichment" and that the Committee used instead the word "familiarity". The Bibliography was redone by Ursula Rempel. Judy suggested that the bibliography on Canadian material that was compiled by Morna-June Morrow be presented to the Guidelines Committee and added to Ursula's bibliography after their approval. Morna-June will phone Ursula to discuss this with her. THAT the Summer Course Guidelines be accepted. (Joan Sumberland, Judy Sills) March 28, 1990 Guidelines for Orff-Schulwerk Training Update: i. Level III - Western Board Theory 4 is equivalent to Royal Conservatory Grade 3 Harmony. Judy Sills has further detailed information. It was recommended that this information be published in the Orff-Schulwerk Training Guidelines. ii. iii. Bibliography: THAT the Bibliography of Canadian Materials compiled by Morna-June Morrow not be included in the Orff-Schulwerk Training Guidelines. (Mary Robinson Ramsay, Phyllis Ilavsky) Copy to Jos Wuytack: Judy Sills sent Jos Wuytack a copy of the Orff-Schulwerk Training Guidelines for his approval. THAT an appropriate cover be designed and the Guidelines be published in draft form with provision for constant updating. (Judy Sills, Carolyn McMillan) ACTION: Judy Sills May 8-9, 1991 THAT a complimentary copy of the Guidelines for Orff Schulwerk Training Courses be sent to each chapter president for their files and for reference. (Donna Otto-Spence, Margaret Inglis) April 2008 Moved that Level II Basic Orff instructors must have taught endorsed Level I Basic Orff for at least 3 years. (Lucie Allyson, Cathy Bayley) Moved that COC ratify the guidelines for Introductory and Level I as revised on April 23, (Cathy Bayely, Joan Linklater) IIIM2b Canadian Orff Schulwerk Courses Guidelines Levels I, II, & III Page 3

November 2009 (Teleconference Meeting) MOVED THAT the Application for Endorsement of Teacher Training Courses in Orff Schulwerk Section #9 - Teaching Faculty be revised to include the following for each Movement, Recorder and Choral instructor. Provide detail of experience and/or training which demonstrates competence in movement, (choral, recorder) as well as in movement (choral, recorder) pedagogy relating to children. (Use another sheet if necessary) (Cathy Bayley/Beryl Peters) April 24-26, 2009 (National Executive Meeting) In the ADHOC meetings, Joe Berarducci raised the question of whether or not we keep the current sequence for levels courses. (Level II: I, IV, V and Level III: modes) The executive discussed a proposal from Pam Hetrick and Catherine West in which Levels Courses directors would have the option of using either sequence. Recommendation: We recognize that the sequence described in this report (Level II: modes and Level III: I, IV, V) represents one valid pedagogical approach. The proposed implementation of a dual track in Canada is fraught with difficulties. Making a change has many implications: Fragments existing courses rather than unifying them Creates difficulties for students transferring from course to course in Canada Mentorship Existing course Guidelines Course Endorsement The ADHOC committee wishes to acknowledge the time that Pam Hetrick and Catherine West have taken to provide such detailed rationale around this substantive issue. MOVED THAT Carl Orff Canada maintain the current sequence of Level II and Level III teacher training courses. (Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney/Ruth Nichols) April, 2010 (From AGM report September 1, 2008-August 31, 2009) The focus of the work over the past year has been to: 1. complete the revisions of the Level II rewrite 2. rewrite the Level III guidelines 3. consult and rewrite the movement guidelines for Level II and III For the meetings in April a completed document was mailed to 14 instructors and consultants across Canada with a series of questions to be addressed and decided upon by the committee. With this step I do hope the entire document can be ratified at this conference. (From Executive meetings April 28-29, 2010) As chair of the ADHOC meetings, Joe Berarducci contacted levels course directors and Basic Orff, recorder, movement, and choral instructors from across Canada for input and feedback. Two years ago the national executive of COC ratified the Introductory Course Guidelines and Level I Guidelines. Yesterday the ADHOC committee completed worked on the Guidelines for Levels II and III. The Guidelines exist in order to maintain quality and consistency for all courses endorsed by Carl Orff IIIM2b Canadian Orff Schulwerk Courses Guidelines Levels I, II, & III Page 4

Canada. In keeping with the spirit of Orff-Schulwerk the Guidelines consist of prescribed requirements while still allowing for the creative input of individual course instructors. The ADHOC committee has been careful to respect the historical roots of COC s original course guidelines. The committee presented the Guidelines for Level II and Level III to be ratified. MOVED THAT the National Executive accept the recommendation of the ADHOC committee regarding the Carl Orff Canada Teacher Education Course Guidelines 2010 Introductory, Level I, Level II, and Level III. (Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney/Denise Lapointe) Discussion: Changes have been made to the formatting and consistency of the document, but the content is largely the same as the previous guidelines.
